The Mad Art of Caricature!: A Serious Guide to Drawing Funny Faces, by Tom Richmond

From the Inside Flap

The School Library Journal, March 2012 issue: Gr 6-Up Master MAD Magazine caricaturist Richmond has something to teach even the least-talented stick-figure artist in this comprehensive discussion of the art form. He meticulously examines the processes and decisions that go into a successful caricature--creating a portrait that not only resembles the subject in an exaggerated fashion, but that also captures elements of his or her personality. Emphasis is placed on careful observation and analysis of faces, breaking them down into shapes and proportions that can be pushed and pulled to create humorous effects without edging into distortion. Richmond then shows how these skills apply to drawing live caricatures, those for illustration, and long-form comic-strip caricatures such as the parodies that appear in MAD Magazine. Although the text is a bit wordy, with some topics becoming labored through frequent repetition, all pertinent information points are thoroughly illustrated with instructive captions. Multitudes of finished caricatures are augmented by diagrams, reference photos, and process drawings. Most of these are titled with silly puns, lending a lighthearted MAD touch to this seriously instructive volume. Readers with a talent for drawing and an eye for absurdity will be inspired to grab a pencil and try a few funny pictures of their own. --- Paula Willey, Baltimore County Public Library, Towson, MD

This book is a must have for anyone who loves comedy (he's quite the comic writer as well as artist), caricatures and Mad Magazine.Plus he shows you how he gets his results... WOW WOW WOW

This is, in my opinion, the best book on caricature you can buy. It does a very good job of showing how, using a few different methods, to draw good faces. Frankly, the other books that are out there range from Meh to garbage. This is a must-have if you aspire to be a caricaturist, portraitist, political cartoonist, or even something like a police or court artist.

You won't believe how much useful advice is packed onto every colorful page of this amazing book. Tom Richmond is that rare expert practitioner who really knows how to put into words what he really does. There are no theoretical discussions here: just practical tips illustrated with hundreds of wonderful caricatures. You can't go wrong with this book!

I grew up with Mad Magazine and always admired the caricature available in it. It was something you couldn't find anywhere else. This book by Tom Richardson, a caricature artist in the best Mad tradition, is both informative and entertaining. I learned so much from it and have been practicing the lessons whenever I can find the time. I also purchased one for my son who saw mine and couldn't put it down. It's never too late to learn a new skill. (I am 74 and my son is 52.)

I haven't gotten through the whole book but it has already been quite helpful for me in giving tips and tricks for capturing a likeness which is why I bought the book. I didn't really have a big interest in caricature but my people-sketching has definitely moved toward the "hey, that actually looks like that guy over there" levels which is a gigantic improvement for me personally :-D

At times it reads like an anatomy textbook as the author introduces each area of the face by naming the muscles/bones/organs. However, there are some really helpful tips to drawing and appreciating caricatures scattered around the anatomy lesson, and any compendium of Tom Richmond's work is a must-have for caricature fans as he is one of the best.

LMAO!!! i LOVE IT!I'm currently in the Navy stationed in Yokosuka, Japan and have always loved to doodle faces. Ever since i was a kid, i remember i could draw the body and all the other features to my satisfaction but not the face. It drove me insane! so i began to grow an obsession of how to master the art of drawing the face, after a while, i got the basic shapes down and after i felt i figured it out i stopped. That was 10 years ago.So fast forward to present day, and while i was here at work on the Ship one day i decided to do a quick doodle of my LPO (boss) on the whiteboard hanging up in the shop. It was a REALLY simple face on this pudgy little body and a crooked mouth with a ball cap saying "arghhh." The guys in my shop thought it was pretty funny and everyone got a good laugh. My boss walked in took a look at it and couldn't stop laughing, that was the moment when i realized i want to draw CARICATURES! It all was very spontaneous and very random, but i felt like it was something that wouldn't only be fun for me, but also be fun for the people that saw them, and hopefully got a kick out of a likeness if i was good enough to pull it off.Having NO idea where to start I started punching in "funny caricatures," into Google image search and browsed through page after page, then i saw this one caricature of Steve Jobs, i couldn't stop laughing i clicked on the picture and it forwarded me to tomrichmond.com :) That's where my inspirational flame turned into a wildfire. I went through his website, all the tutorials and saw his offering for this book. The book came in about a week ago, and i can't put it down. It answers every single question you could ever have about any detail of the face, breaks down an even more advanced concepts like digital color if you choose to take it that far, or breaks down how to even do live caricatures step by step to save time and achieve maximum likeness and Humor. I've got in trouble a couple times because i'll be reading the book more than doing my work :)Since getting the book I got this idea to Caricature my entire chain of command and so far the results have been HILLARIOUS! there's a point when your following Tom's steps in the book, and your drawing starts to come to life and you can't stop laughing and your hand is shaking and you find it a little difficult to concentrate because all you want to do is laugh!!! I love it. I did one of my Captain a couple days ago and was kinda scared to show it to anybody cause the likeness was scary! I scanned a copy from my sketchbook and dropped it in the "CO's suggestion Box," :) i'm still waiting to see how it's gonna play out hmhmhm. But ya,Amazing find, and incredible book. Thanks so much to Mad Magazine, and Tom Richmond for making this book! Incredibly inspirational. Forget about all those other books, THIS IS THE ONE!!!

Wanted to know how to create caricatures so could use information in teaching students of portraiture how to look for the important features to create a good likeness. This is well presented!

I particularly like this book for the exaggeration qualities and the many examples provided. I an new to this genre and need to see as well as learn steps to accomplish a good caricature. This book provides both. This would make a very nice present or coffee table book as well.

Securing the Perimeter: Deploying Identity and Access Management with Free Open Source Software

From the Back Cover

Leverage existing free open source software to build an identity and access management (IAM) platform that can serve your organization for the long term. With the emergence of open standards and open source software, it’s now easier than ever to build and operate your own IAM stack. The most common culprit of the largest hacks has been bad personal identification. In terms of bang for your buck, effective access control is the best investment you can make. Financially, it’s more valuable to prevent than to detect a security breach. That’s why Identity and Access Management (IAM) is a critical component of an organization’s security infrastructure. In the past, IAM software has been available only from large enterprise software vendors. Commercial IAM offerings are bundled as “suites” because IAM is not just one component. It’s a number of components working together, including web, authentication, authorization, cryptographic, and persistence services. Securing the Perimeter documents a recipe to take advantage of open standards to build an enterprise-class IAM service using free open source software. This recipe can be adapted to meet the needs of both small and large organizations. While not a comprehensive guide for every application, this book provides the key concepts and patterns to help administrators and developers leverage a central security infrastructure.Cloud IAM service providers would have you believe that managing an IAM is too hard. Anything unfamiliar is hard, but with the right road map, it can be mastered. You may find SaaS identity solutions too rigid or too expensive. Or perhaps you don’t like the idea of a third party holding the credentials of your users―the keys to your kingdom. Open source IAM provides an alternative. Take control of your IAM infrastructure if digital services are key to your organization’s success. What You’ll Learn:Understand why you should deploy a centralized authentication and policy management infrastructureUse the SAML or Open ID Standards for web or single sign-on, and OAuth for API Access ManagementSynchronize data from existing identity repositories such as Active DirectoryDeploy two-factor authentication services

Mike Schwartz and Maciej Machulak have done an admirable job in creating a primer on identity management that can be used by both professionals who are new to the IAM field as well as those in other fields who just want to understand the IAM space better and/or to discern how IAM services interact with their own. The authors start with the most basic concepts of IAM and step the reader through to more complex subjects: LDAP to SAML to OAuth to OpenID Connect, etc.. Where this book differentiates itself from other works is its inclusion of Free Open Source Software (FOSS) that is available for each use case to allow the reader to build their own IAM systems to put the principles into practice. I also appreciate that the authors reached out to industry experts to review the more recent advances like FIDO, WebAuthN, and UMA. A great addition to any company’s library of material for new identity professionals.

This book is an excellent introduction to identity and access management (what Gartner refers to as IAM). Chapter 1 introduces the enduring notion of the PDP and PAP, which was developed by the pioneers of the Internet in the 1990 in the IETF. The chapter provides a brief introduction to the current standards in the IAM space (LDAP, SAML, OAuth, OpenID Connect, and UMA).Chapter 2 is devoted to LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, RFC2251), which is the grand-daddy of what is called today Directory Services, first championed by Novell in the 1990s. If your company or organization is operating Windows Server (on-premise or in the cloud), then you are running a directory services product (namely Windows Active Directory). This chapter focuses on LDAP because LDAP is simple (compared to Active Directory) and sufficiently embodies the various concepts that will be built upon in later chapters. The chapter covers various aspects of LDAP that are relevant to the topic of identity management.Chapter 3 is devoted to the Security Assertions Markup Language (SAML). The SAML standard was the first to address the need for Web Single Sign-On (Web-SSO), notably when the end-user is connecting using only a Browser to a service provider, such as an online merchant. The SAML standard defines a number of constructs which are key to communicating the information or data regarding the individual (or organization) whose digital-identity is being assessed. The Chapter covers these in sufficient detail (e.g. Assertions, Query-Response Protocol, Bindings and use-case profiles such as the Web-SSO profile). Best of all, the chapter actually provides some “swim lane” diagrams that shows the protocol flows – something that is very relevant to developers who are seeking to understand better the SAML exchanges. With the emergence of mobile devices and social media platforms in the past decade, a new protocol called OAuth emerged that is today dominant in many of the new platforms. This is the subject of Chapter 4. Most of the popular developer APIs to access services offered by major social media platforms (e.g. Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) employ the OAuth 2.0 protocol and tokens in one form or another. The chapter discusses the entities in an OAuth 2.0 setup, OAuth 2.0 tokens, the various grant types and flows, and provides a good example of OAuth 2.0 in action using Google APIs.Developers who have played around with OAuth 2.0 realize that additional features are needed to make it more deployment-ready. The protocol that extends OAuth2.0 is the OpenID-Connect (OIDC) protocol, which is the subject of Chapter 5. This chapter is one of the nicest and easiest to read explanations of OpenID-Connect. It even discusses more recent additions to the protocol, such as Client Registration.Chapter 6 presents a discussion about proxy servers and proxying, which is something every developer needs to be aware of nowadays because it is a core part of the network topology of many (most) medium to large organizations.Chapter 7 provides an overview of One Time Passwords (OTP) as part of the need for strong authentication. The chapter provides useful background information about standards coming from the FIDO Alliance (an industry consortium focusing on strong authentication). Specifically, it presents a good high-level explanation of the FIDO Universal Authentication Framework (UAF).Chapter 8 discusses one of the major issues today with IAM systems and data privacy, namely consent by individuals for access to their data and files. The protocol that implements consent rules and the enforcement of these rules on the user’s data/files is the User Managed Access (UMA) architecture and protocol. The reader is advised to first read Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 before attempting to read Chapter 8. This chapter provides one of the more accessible material on the UMA protocol. These three chapters (4, 5 and 8) make this book worth every penny.Chapter 9 provides an overview of open source softwares/tools that helps deploy and manage IAM systems. The chapter provides an overview of the various tasks involved in identity management by an IT organization. Each of the open source tools are only briefly described, and the keen reader is encouraged to look up these tools.Chapter 10 addresses the issue of scaling up identity services, notably in the consumer space. The technical term used is Federation or Federated Identity Management. The main purpose of federation is for identity service providers (even competitors) to work together to provide a seamless single sign-on (SSO) login experience to users who need to be authenticated by a relying party (such as an online merchant). Ideally the user should need to login only once, regardless of the destination online merchant. However, since a user maybe registered at only one Identity Provider (which may not be directly associated with the online merchant), these identity providers need to federate with each other under a common legal trust framework and contract. Chapter 10 provides the reader with a very good introduction to the concepts and nuances of identity federation. All in all, this is a very good book for the reader who maybe new to the area of Identity and Access Management (IAM), or new to OAuth2.0 in the context of API access ti services. As mentioned before, the core value of this book is Chapters 4, 5 and 8. These chapters are well written by a seasoned practitioner, making the book accessible and unique among the books on identity management. Both authors are experts in the field, and have been actively involved in the IAM space for over a decade now.To give a balanced perspective, the only slightly negative aspect of the book is the use of the Gluu software for many of the examples. However, these code examples are very useful and necessary. As the primary developer of the Gluu software Mike Schwartz (first author) is very familiar with the code. As such, it makes sense for him to use his own code for illustrative examples throughout the book.

This authoritative book serves as a resource as well as a learning platform. The world of identity, and IAM, is confusing, esoteric, and rife with conflicting opinions and interpretations. Most identity professionals are self taught, even if you are an expert, you have gaps. This book covers everything from OAuth to MFA. How is your identity IQ? If you are in IT, security, privacy, or any related field, this is a must read to round out your knowledge. If you enjoy hands-on learning, take the journey to use the open source Guu software. This book has something for everyone.

This book is excellent for those starting in the IAM (Identity and Access Management) world. For professionals already established in the field it also serves as a valuable reference document because it surveys the key topics and technologies involved in IAM solutions.Throughout its chapters, it covers the theory of relevant applicable standards as well as practical open source solutions to deploy an IAM infrastructure in your organization.Interestingly, conceptual background is usually presented in its historical context which helps better understand the shape of the current IAM landscape. On the other hand, the extent to which the examples are driven is very generous. Readers will get a good tech insight out of them.

We Need New Names: A Novel, by NoViolet Bulawayo

From Booklist

In Bulawayo’s engaging and often disturbing semiautobiographical first novel, 10-year-old Darling describes, with childlike candor and a penetrating grasp of language, first, her life in Zimbabwe during its so-called Lost Decade and then her life as a teenager in present-day America. What is at once delightful and disturbing is the fact that young Darling and her friends are so resilient amidst chaos. Darling must cope with absentee parents gone to who-knows-where, seeking jobs and a better life; abusive adults; and murdering bands of self-appointed police in a country gone horribly wrong. Yet she evinces a sense of chauvinism regarding her corrupt homeland when she joins her aunt in America. There she discovers a country that has fallen into a different kind of chaos, primarily economic. She and her new family struggle while America fails to live up to her hopes. Ultimately what lingers is Bulawayo’s poignant insights into how a person decides what to embrace and what to surrender when adapting to a new culture in a new land. --Donna Chavez

We Need New Names is a lush, language-rich narration by a young African girl who gradually becomes an expat in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The narrator's voice has a wonderful innocence, even as she and her playmates (I'd say schoolmates but the teachers have all left the country and the school closed) play such games as "Find Bin Laden." She also has a special gift for capturing expressions on other characters' faces: "like she was hearing music inside her head and dancing to it" is a description of the expression of an aunt who has been complimented by an old flame who is marrying someone else. The disintegration of the home country, the desperate desire to be somewhere else, and the bitterness of those left behind are rendered in muscular, lyrical prose studded with native ("our language" which is never identified) and childish phrases. The description of eating the guavas (on which she used to gorge herself as a child) for the first time since coming to the U.S. Is worth the price of admission: funny, tender, voracious, and yearning. The only piece of this novel that hit a sour note for me was a chapter at the end of the book narrated by a "we" rather than the "I" in every other chapter. It consisted of a lyrical, wild description of the labor of largely undocumented newcomers to the US. While beautiful in its own right, and easily capable of being a brilliant standalone essay, it was oddly out of place, especially as our narrator herself had barely begun to work. It sounded like an angry political squawk in an otherwise equally powerful but more subtle birdsong that is ultimately more personal and persuasive.

NoViolet Bulawayo's debut novel WE NEED NEW NAMES is an original, and a stunning work.It has been identified as a coming of age work--with the central character of Darling. It has been described as having a plot that moves from Darling's childhood in Zimbabwe, to her coming to America, and her experiences as she moves into adulthood.I don't disagree with these descriptions; I just find them inadequate.First, this is definitely not a plot driven work. Certainly you can follow a progressive story line--but the story being told is of an interior landscape rather than a series of external adventures.Second, as the novel progresses, it settles into a shifting kaleidoscope of alternating focus--Darling's experiences; the larger geopolitical scene; and the interior anguish of people unmoored in their place in time and country. This novel is not for the faint of heart. There was at least one chapter that, frankly, I would have rather not read. And the experiences of Darling in Zimbabwe are searing--as befits the current geopolitical scene. There is the genuine heartbreak of leaving and losing one's country. One of the reviews--in the New York Times--wrote about the third chapter from the conclusion."At one point, in an effort to make Darling’s experiences broadly representative, Ms. Bulawayo writes an entire chapter using the plural pronoun “we” — speaking of the move to America, and the bitterness so many immigrants feel, as they are forced to take menial jobs or find their hopes frustrated...Such generalizations are the one misstep in this otherwise stunning novel. Not only because they try to project one point of view onto the experiences of a wide and varied group of immigrants, but also because they are not always true."And as evidence of this assertion, the review writer points out that NoViolet Bulawayo has flourished as an immigrant.TALK ABOUT MISSING THE POINT. Yes, this is a story of an immigrant, and of immigrants. But MORE SO--it is a story about losing one's country, one's connection to ancestors, one's place in the past and the future. For just that near final chapter alone--titled "How They Lived"--WE NEED NEW NAMES is a most compelling work.

This writing in this book is as creative as the author's nom de plume, No Violet. Her unusual use of language in showing the reader life in Zimbabwe through the eyes of a special wise child, becomes part of the reader's experience. Then, she juxtaposes it with her new life in cities she dreamed of in the USA. Neither is perfect. But she is self-possessed enough to navigate and explain the world of immigrants. "Undocumented" has become a loaded word. But her words render humor and compassion. Equal to her favorite book, "The Haidresser of Harare", she shines a light on life in post colonial Africa . Junot Diaz chose her as an outstanding new voice. I agree.

This novel is the story of a young African girl who eventually leaves her homeland to come to America. Her life in Africa is described in rich, textured detail. You really get the descriptive sense of what she was experiencing; the sights, smells, and sounds. Even though she was living in extreme poverty and experiencing political oppression, she managed to create a childhood for herself and her friends. The description of her acclimating to life in cold, snowy Michigan is masterful. So is the development of the second half of the novel, as she tries to balance her life as an American, while trying to retain her African identity. A throughly engaging read.

From Booklist

While working on the manuscript detailing the tragic events surrounding her son’s death and the healing her family found through the love of a special cat (Cleo, 2010), Brown is dealt a devastating one-two punch that sends her fragile world reeling. She is diagnosed with breast cancer, and her eldest daughter announces her desire to move to war-torn Sri Lanka and become a Buddhist nun. Feeling uncertain and needy, Brown struggles with the knowledge that she must let Lydia pursue her own dreams, even though, selfishly, she wants to keep her by her side. Although Lydia returns in time to see Brown through her crisis, her compulsion to follow the Buddhist way will test Brown’s maternal mettle. Once again, it will take a remarkable feline to help her family put things in perspective and impart the kinds of life lessons one can’t always learn from a two-footed guru. Candid, genuine, and unaffected, Brown’s touching memoir celebrates the affirmational power of animal companions to help humans navigate life’s most challenging moments. --Carol Haggas

First, let me say that I was not aware of the author's first book, "Cleo" until I began reading this book. I don't remember how I discovered the availability of this title but it captured my attention and it was added to my 'wish to read' list. This is a beautiful memoir by Helen Brown to delight every aspect of a reader's senses from the beauty of the cover design by Colleen Andrews to the collage of color family photographs on the first page to the author's remembrances throughout the pages. The descriptions of experiences, thoughts and emotions are shared with honesty and without hesitation. As I am a daughter that wandered away from my home town on two occasions to follow my heart - once for professional exploration and once simply to follow my heart - I can truly understand some of the perplexing conversations through the years between mother and daughter. As dearest cat Jolie continued to live with Mother throughout the years of these same wanderings I have a deep appreciation for Jonah's nurturing of Helen Brown's family as well as his soulful reactions. This is a very special glimpse of the bonds shared by mothers and daughters, the friendship circle of women when courage, strength and hope are needed for sharing in higher volumes but softly without fanfare and the unconditional love between cats and their forever families.

This is a follow-up to Helen Brown's earlier book, "Cleo: the Cat Who Mended a Family". That one was a difficult read because of the tragedy of Sam's death, but after I finished it, I felt like I was good friends with everyone in the family. So I was pleased when I learned of this book, because I wanted to know what had happened next with Helen's family. I was not disappointed. I got to share in the next phase of the family's lives--Rob's marriage, and Lydia's quest for spiritual growth, and Helen's deepening understanding of her daughters. The author also showed her courage when faced with cancer. It was also interesting to 'see behind the scenes' of how a best selling book came to be written--and how it impacted the world.I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and hope a third one comes along soon.

I loved Cleo, but this book isn't about the cat -- it's all about the author. And this account is by one of the most self-absorbed people I've ever read. I, too, have had breast cancer, and I certainly know about the anxiety. But are these theatrics what it's been for the thousands of us who have just got on with things, and not made ourselves the middle of a drama?

I hadn't read the author's previous book, "Cleo". After subsequently reading "Cleo", I would suggest reading it before reading "Cats & Daughters". In any case, "Cats ....." is a great book that talks about family relationships and challenges as well as the important part that a cat played in dealing with these issues. The book is well-written and was an interesting read. The writing pulled me in and I felt like I had a front row seat to seeing the author's feelings and reactions. A good book.

This is supposed to be a sequel to CLEO. It is not. There is very little of the cat in here. It is mostly about the author's daughter. It was not nearly as engaging as the previous book. I will not be keeping this one.

As I am wont to do, I read the sequel, Cats and Daughters, loved it and am now reading the first book, Cleo. In any order, they both deliver a strong message. Embrace life you don't get another this go-round. I don't have a daughter. I do have a sister and I do have a cat. Neither the sister or the cat necessarily comes when called so I'm guessing daughters are the same way. Also cool is the fact the author hails from New Zealand. She is correct; people remain the same, past, present, future and on various parts of the globe.

Expected more from this book. I am a Siamese cat owner and absolutely love the breed and how they interact with us humans, The book centers more on the author and her family then secondly on the cat. Although she does incorporate the Siamese and I understand her plot ; it became boring and redundent.

People who have raised cats and kids will recognize a lot of the behaviors. For the most part, is a narrative of the ups and downs of normal life in sort of "as the world turns" style. The author seems to be a nice person and the book a "feel good" sort of experience.
