This book grabs you in it's first sentence. This fast-paced suspense novel centers around Nikki Wright who is helping her brother who has returned from his kidnappers in Columbia - or did he escape? Is he a traitor to the US? Is he being set-up? Who can Nikki trust? Loyalty to her brother and faith in God (and Kade Wheaton, her ex-love) is tested as she tries to discover the truth while also trying to stay alive. Who is trying to kill them? This story keeps you guessing till the very end on what is fact and who is the real enemy. Great energy, complex characters and situations, and action-packed suspense makes this a story that you can't put down! I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. I liked it so much that I ordered a copy for my mother who is a mystery buff!

Christy Barritt is one of my favorite authors. This newest release continues to add to my admiration for her. I read this book in the first day I downloaded it as I was given a complimentary copy for an honest review. It was non-stop, nail-biting suspense from page one. Christy gave a unique look at the situation of military families. Whether deployed or stepping back into civilian life, Christy helped me have a new perspective of what our military men and women face. In this story, one character is faced with the possible charge of treason and the news media is slamming his character, his sister Nikki is trying to hold everything together. Sinister schemes and twisted relationships will blend to give one fantastic story. Awkward relationships from the past will also give the main character Nikki a soul searching journey toward the One who truly holds everything together. This is a great read! Don't miss it.

I became a fan of Christy’s books when I read some of her Love Inspired Suspense stories. Christy knows how to write in a way that grabs a reader so fast that one cannot help but get lost in the book for hours! Here, in Disillusioned, Christy did a magnificent job of sometimes throwing off this reader with twists and turns in the plot or adding characters. The main female is Nikki Wright who has been helping her brother get out of trouble or dangerous spots that have recently been putting her in life threatening situations too.Booby seems to have some mental issues going on as he tries to figure out if what he heard in captivity is real or not. The medication seems to help Bobby until it is analyzed as requested by Nikki’s former boyfriend and SEAL Kade. Nikki, Bobby and Kade are always on the run or dodging a pursuit and never sure who they can or cannot trust. When the threat for terrorism is revealed, none of the main characters is sure who the leader is as he/she only is known by the name “Ace”.When I came to the ending and read who actually was known as “Ace”, I was surprised, but that wasn’t the end of the story. No, it was the beginning of the heightened climax as Nikki, Kade and Kade’s friend are in mortal danger. Plus, Bobby has been missing and off his meds and with his training in the military he is one hard man to find! The novel is somewhat reflective of what is happening in modern day society with home grown terrorists and those who are on watch for threats to this nation.I really enjoyed the action, adventure and yes the reigniting of a romance that a couple of characters thought was long over. For an enjoyable and suspense filled ride, here is a book that fits that bill, so please don’t pass on it! In fact, you might consider either sharing your copy or giving one as a gift to other readers you know!

This book grabs your attention in the first few pages. Nikki is trying to help her brother who just escaped from his kidnappers in Columbia. No one believes that Nikki’s brother Bobby was just able to escape his kidnappers. That’s the theme of the book the good guys seeming like the bad guys, who can trust who? The book keeps you in suspense till almost the end of who the main “bad guy” is. Oh, did I mention Bobby is a Navy SEAL and Kade who comes in to help Nikki and Bobby is also Navy SEAL, but also Nikki’s ex-love.My favorite part of this book is the relationship/faith Kade has with the Lord and the lack of faith Nikki has. In the mist of all the crazy things that is happening in her life Nikki starts to questions why she let God go. Nikki was a stronger believer at one point, but she let life problems push her away from God.Great book!!!! God bless.

Wow! What a fast paced page turning book that is filled with action and suspense. I couldn't put this book down at all. I just had to know what happened to Nikki, Bobby, and Kade.Bobby gets captured during a mission in Columbia and somehow manages to get free but not before over hearing tons of information from terrorists that he just can't seem to remember. Upon re-entering the US things go south as Bobby has issues returning to a normal life. He refuses to be debriefed right away and seeks medical help first. When Nikki Bobby's sister picks him up from the hospital things go south real quick and after that point the action never stops. Everyone says Bobby is a terrorist but is he really? Bobby calls Kade in to help out when things get bad.Unfortunately for Nikki, Kade is her ex boyfriend. Nikki doesn't want his help but yet she can't say no. Old feelings start to resurface on Nikki's end but after what Kade did to her can she forgive? Does Kade feel the same way about Nikki. This is a must read for anyone who is a fan of action packed books.

Judith Valente, like many of us, lives in two worlds. One is the world of award-winning national reporter for the best newspapers and television networks in America. She is also a published poet and seasoned speaker. Her second world has a name -- Benedictine Oblate. An oblate is someone outside of a monastery who chooses to immerse herself or himself as much as possible in the life of the community, taking wisdom from it back out into the world. The community Valente chose is Mount St. Scholastica in Atchinson, Kansas.Or perhaps Mount St. Scholastica chose her. The turning point in her adult life was arriving at the Mount to give a retreat, having just published a book of poems praising contemplation. She felt like an imposter, recognizing the irony in the fact that she was exhausted from too much travel and too many commitments. In the chapel she came face to face with the man who had balm for her wounds -- a stained-glass portrait of St. Benedict with arms outstretched, offering solace. Around him were Latin words she translated as “at all times, cultivate silence.” Those words restored her soul. Eventually, she became an oblate. “I arrived at Mount St. Scholastica a poetry expert of sorts. I left a student of The Rule.” This book is the fruit of what she learned from St. Benedict’s ancient text – hers is a generous outpouring for our frantic, fragmented, world. Each chapter of the book begins with a quote from The Rule and focuses on a subject related to the subtitle: happiness, meaning, and community. At the end of the chapter (22 of them, all short enough to be read devotionally) the reader will find a few good questions for personal or communal application. I would recommend the book to small study groups of any kind and to professors teaching classes in vocation either at the college or seminary level.A few quotes will illustrate Valente’s skill at combining her two worlds:“The emotional tools that The Rule lays out have been more valuable to me than any self-help book or therapy session.”“The true monastic enclosure is the human heart.”“Our work is loving the world.”One of the delightful passages in the book contrasts the way Dorothy Parker reputedly answered her phone (“What fresh hell is this?”) with the instructions to the porter in The Rule. The porter was an older member of the community who had two choices upon seeing a guest on the doorstep. He could say, “Thanks be to God.” Or “Your blessing, please.”In many ways Judith Valente is an oblate porter, opening the door of the monastery to all of us, believers and skeptics alike. She asks for our blessing as she confesses her own struggles to balance prayer and work (ora et labora), the two foundations of Benedictine community. And to us she offers the blessing of fourteen centuries of practice with The Rule of Saint Benedict made accessible to our time.

There is much to value in this book. It is as much about how to live as it is about the Rule of St. Benedict. One of the appeals to me is that Mrs. Valente uses phrases and sentences from the Rule as a springboard for her reflections on life and then adds at the end of each chapter questions which encourage me to do the same. Many of the books I've read about the Rule of Saint Benedict are so enamored with the Rule that they often fail to connect it either to their lives or our lives. Others are good at relating it to Monastery life, which necessarily is limited in its inclusion. This is a book by a contemporary journalist, step mother, wife and sometimes workaholic who finds in the Rule keys, suggestions, sayings that help her deal with the challenges she faces. In the process of sharing those she encouraged me to look at the Rule more sparingly and at my life more carefully. I've given it to two Benedictine friends and will to others I suspect as well. It has a special place already among my collection of books about the Rule of St. Benedict. My favorite line in the book is, "As I age, I realize that I don't so much desire to be seen as flawless, but rather both flawed and still worthy." No doubt we can find flaws in the book, but it is a very worthy one. I recommend it gladly and highly.

I love this book! After reading the first chapter, I ordered 3 more and have given them to my spiritual director, a Sufi friend, and my poet friend. Each morning I wake, eager to find just the right lesson for the day. Today it came from Chapter 16, on coming to consensus in community. We are in the midst of selling our home, and Judith’s reflection on the Rule and her example from her life experience was just what I needed today. Judith weaves her life experiences into the Rule so seamlessly and delightfully that it brings the words of this ancient text to life in a profound way...so needed right now in today's world. My only regret is that I am almost finished with the book. Sequel needed!!

For several years I've stayed at a Trappist monastery a week at a time for over eight weeks. And each time I wondered how to replicate the experience in daily life. Now How to Live has provided the insights to examine that further. It's a great read with personal examples right out of my own journal so I can relate so much to the journey ... Her journey, my journey, our journey.

I completely and enthusiastically agree with all the comments in the above reviews. What more can I say? Well, this is a very special one of a kind read on cultivating one's interior life. My first reaction was to send an email to 130 of my far flung friends urging them to do themselves a favor and go online on Amazon to buy this book. And I quoted from some of the additional endorsement to be found in this book. "Even if you've never set foot in a Benedictine monastery, this book will help you live a more contemplative life in the busiest of worlds---your own." James Martin, SJ author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage."A self-professed workaholic, the author allows the reader to see how her life has changed for the better since she took this ancient wisdom to heart. Kathleen Norris, author of The Cloister Walk."To have such a gifted writer live and report through the lens of the Rule of St.Benedict is a blessing for all of us." Jerome Kodell, author of Don't Trust the Abbot: Musings from the Monastery. So to all of you reading these lines, DO YOURSELVES A FAVOR.!

Each chapter examines a different aspect of St. Benedict’s teaching. Personal stories remind us the author struggles as we do, so the tone is not one of lecture. Questions at the end of each chapter focus us on applying ‘The Rule’ in our lives.

This is a great book for those of us interested in how to apply enduring spiritual principles to all aspects of our contemporary lives. In the most genuine and generous way, the author opens up a window into her life and we can see example after example of the Rule at work, helping us all in our strivings for meaning and purpose.

The Antinomies Of Realism, by Fredric Jameson

Review

“Manifestly displays Jameson’s many virtues as a truly great critic ... It is not always easy to read the work of someone who just won’t sit on his laurels: but in this case it is worth it.” —Robert Eaglestone, Times Higher Education “This latest installment in his epic ‘poetics of social form’ is vintage Jameson: no other critic has his range of reference in literature and theory, and no one dialecticizes their connections to politics and history with anything like his transformative energy. Not since Auerbach has ‘realism’ been so penetratingly analyzed or so radically rethought. With many surprises along the way – such as the new centrality Jameson affords ‘affect’ in the realist novel – the results are absolutely stunning.” —Hal Foster, Princeton University “Admirable ... Jameson thinks dialectically in the strong sense, in the way we are all supposed to think but almost no one does.” —Michael Wood, London Review of Books

Great Quality of Product and Fabulous Service

What can I say; it's Jameson.

Fredric Jameson at his best! Who else could bring such immense erudition to a conceptual analysis of what appears to be his first love: the novel? With his characteristic and brilliant deployment of philosophical and political ideas developed over a lifetime of critical observations, Jameson takes a backward look at the notion of what's the real in the novels of Walter Scott, Zola, George Elliott, Twain, Faulkner, Tolstoy and many others. It's one of my own best books of the year.

Look, there's no question that Jameson is a serious and important thinker. But the fact remains that he is not a good writer; he badly needs an editor, and it seems as though he is too famous for someone to stand up and tell him when a sentence doesn't work. There are many such sentences here. It's hard to know where to begin with the problems with this book. The breadth of erudition is impressive, but often haphazard, and authors are mentioned with no apparent purpose except that they occurred to Jameson as he was writing. There is a sense of self-assured free-assocation throughout. That, combined with some truly atrocious writing, frequent inconsistencies and contradictions, leaves little to hold the book together. And the assembling of the book seems to have been as rushed as the composition. There are typos throughout, inconsistencies in citation, transliteration, and translation (in one paragraph, a city is referred to by its Czech and German names; if you didn't know already what he was talking about, you could easily be confused about what was going on).The theory of realism itself, such as it is, is a parade of trendy topics in academia today, with little insight as far as I can tell, and a great deal of pomp. The part that would have been most useful to me -- the bibliography that captures the famously wide range of references -- is absent.

This is not only an important book, carrying a thesis that open a vital discussion to literary theory concerned with the nexus between history and literature, but it also comes in a beautiful edition.

Yuval Noah Harari's "Homo Deus" continues the tradition introduced in his previous book "Sapiens": clever, clear and humorous writing, intelligent analogies and a remarkable sweep through human history, culture, intellect and technology. In general it is as readable as "Sapiens" but suffers from a few limitations. On the positive side, Mr. Harari brings the same colorful and thought-provoking writing and broad grasp of humanity, both ancient and contemporary, to the table. He starts with exploring the three main causes of human misery through the ages - disease, starvation and war - and talks extensively about how improved technological development, liberal political and cultural institutions and economic freedom have led to very significant declines in each of these maladies. Continuing his theme from "Sapiens", a major part of the discussion is devoted to shared zeitgeists like religion and other forms of belief that, notwithstanding some of their pernicious effects, can unify a remarkably large number of people across the world in striving together for humanity's betterment. As in "Sapiens", Mr. Harari enlivens his discussion with popular analogies from current culture ranging from McDonald's and modern marriage to American politics and pop music. Mr. Harari's basic take is that science and technology combined with a shared sense of morality have created a solid liberal framework around the world that puts individual rights front and center. There are undoubtedly communities that don't respect individual rights as much as others, but these are usually seen as challenging the centuries-long march toward liberal individualism rather than upholding the global trend. The discussion above covers about two thirds of the book. About half of this material is recycled from "Sapiens" with a few fresh perspectives and analogies. The most important general message that Mr. Harari delivers, especially in the last one third of the book, is that this long and inevitable-sounding imperative of liberal freedom is now ironically threatened by the very forces that enabled it, most notably the forces of technology and globalization. Foremost among these are artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. These significant new developments are gradually making human beings cede their authority to machines, in ways small and big, explicitly and quietly. Ranging from dating to medical diagnosis, from the care of the elderly to household work, entire industries now stand to both benefit and be complemented or even superseded by the march of the machines. Mr. Harari speculates about a bold vision in which most manual labor has been taken over by machines and true human input is limited only to a very limited number of people, many of whom because of their creativity and demand will likely be in the top financial echelons of society. How will the rich and the poor live in these societies? We have already seen how the technological decimation of parts of the working class was a major theme in the 2016 election in the United States and the vote for Brexit in the United Kingdom. It was also a factor that was woefully ignored in the public discussion leading up to these events, probably because it is much easier to provoke human beings against other human beings rather than against cold, impersonal machines. And yet it is the cold, impersonal machines which will increasingly interfere with human lives. How will social harmony be preserved in the face of such interference? If people whose jobs are now being done by machines get bored, what new forms of entertainment and work will we have to invent to keep them occupied? Man after all is a thinking creature, and extended boredom can cause all sorts of psychological and social problems. If the division of labor between machines and men becomes extreme, will society fragment into H. G. Wells's vision of two species, one of which literally feeds on the other even as it sustains it?These are all tantalizing as well as concerning questions, but while Mr. Harari does hold forth on them with some intensity and imagination, this part of the book is where his limitations become clear. Since the argument about ceding human authority to machines is also a central one, the omission also unfortunately appears to me to be a serious one. The problem is that Mr. Harari is an anthropologist and social scientist, not an engineer, computer scientist or biologist, and many of the questions of AI are firmly grounded in engineering and software algorithms. There are mountains of literature written about machine learning and AI and especially their technical strengths and limitations, but Mr. Harari makes few efforts to follow them or to explicate their central arguments. Unfortunately there is a lot of hype these days about AI, and Mr. Harari dwells on some of the fanciful hype without grounding us in reality. In short, his take on AI is slim on details, and he makes sweeping and often one-sided arguments while largely skirting clear of the raw facts. The same goes for his treatment for biology. He mentions gene editing several times, and there is no doubt that this technology is going to make some significant inroads into our lives, but what is missing is a realistic discussion of what biotechnology can or cannot do. It is one thing to mention brain-machine interfaces that would allow our brains to access supercomputer-like speeds in an offhand manner; it's another to actually discuss to what extent this would be feasible and what the best science of our day has to say about it.In the field of AI, particularly missing is a discussion of neural networks and deep learning which are two of the main tools used in AI research. Also missing is a view of a plurality of AI scenarios in which machines either complement, subjugate or are largely tamed by humans. When it comes to AI and the future, while general trends are going to be important, much of the devil will be in the details - details which decide how the actual applications of AI will be sliced and diced. This is an arena in which even Mr. Harari's capacious intellect falls short. The ensuing discussion thus seems tantalizing but does not give us a clear idea of the actual potential of machine technology to impact human culture and civilization. For reading more about these aspects, I would recommend books like Nick Bostrom's "Superintelligence", Pedro Domingos's "The Master Algorithm" and John Markoff's "Machines of Loving Grace". All these books delve into the actual details that sum up the promise and fear of artificial intelligence.Notwithstanding these limitations, the book is certainly readable, especially if you haven't read "Sapiens" before. Mr. Harari's writing is often crisp, the play of his words is deftly clever and the reach of his mind and imagination immerses us in a grand landscape of ideas and history. At the very least he gives us a very good idea of how far we as human beings have come and how far we still have to go. As a proficient prognosticator Mr. Harari's crystal ball remains murky, but as a surveyor of past human accomplishments his robust and unique abilities are still impressive and worth admiring.

This book is a mixed bag. It has three parts. The first is a review of some of the concepts explored in Harari's earlier book Sapiens. It elaborates on the fascinating concept of "intersubjective reality", whereby concepts that are shared in our collective imagination have great power to shape our objective reality; examples given include money, corporations, pop-culture brands, and religions. Part 1 is engaging and insightful, and deserves 4/5 stars.Part 2 is a critique of what Harari calls "humanism". He really dislikes humanism: he inaccurately states its tenets, and then repeatedly mocks it (for example, as promoting indulgent consumerism and sex). He claims that humanism is what is giving rise to an emerging cybernetic dystopia, described in Part 3.Harari is abusing the word "humanism," as a canvas on which to paint his caricature of modern liberal culture ("liberal" in the classical sense, not in the sense of left-wing politics). He is not really interested in what humanist writers and philosophers have actually said, and does not reference their works. He claims that humanism promotes the belief in a supernatural free will (when in fact, humanists value agency and freedom, but have differing opinions on free will). He claims that humanism believes in an indivisible self/soul (when in fact, psychologists since Freud have a different understanding). And he claims that humanism believes that individuals always know best about their own needs (when in fact, many have emphasized the importance of education in our development--he does not even reference John Dewey). Harari also co-opts related terms that already have other established meanings, such as "evolutionary humanism" and "liberal humanism".If you want to understand humanism or other social-political movements of the 19th and 20th centuries, Harari will lead you astray. Part 2 deserves only 2/5 stars.Part 3 is a dire prediction for humanity's future, as genetic engineering, AI, and human-machine interface technologies advance. Harari gives several scenarios, each of which are described very plausibly as future extrapolations of current trends. These scenarios are thought provoking and disturbing--we as a society should be taking them more seriously. There is an interesting discussion of an emerging religion/ideology of "dataism", wherein moral worth depends on the ability to enhance data flow, rather than on consciousness. Part 3 deserves 4/5 stars. For most of the book, Harari appears to be adopting a materialistic perspective, and one which is also extremely unsentimental and discounts the significance of human morale and character. He pretends to assume that human beings are nothing more than algorithms. However, some of his arguments (against the existence of an indivisible self, against free-will) are similar to those in Buddhism. He also discusses how animals and people have consciousness and subjective experiences, and presumes that artificial intelligence will remain unconscious (the "weak AI" hypothesis of John Searle). And on the very last page, he makes us wonder if his hardcore materialistic perspective has just been a long, extended ruse: he asks us to question a worldview that would deny the significance of consciousness. So it seems likely that in a future book he will focus on the nature of consciousness, and argue for non-theistic Buddhism (an understated agenda in Harari's writing--perhaps he thinks that this is the way for humanity to avoid the grim fate predicted here?).The reader concerned about techno-dystopia may also be interested in "Weapons of Math Destruction," by Cathy O'Neil.[Update 6/13/2017: see the comment below, by kaiser100, for further insight into Harari's perspective on consciousness and meditation. The comment begins with "Harari indeed believes that developing an understanding of consciousness, a science of mind, or however else one wishes to phrase it is the best and perhaps the only way to avert the grim fate that threatens humanity in this century."]
