Ever been reading a book and suddenly you realize that you are running out of pages and there seems to be a LOT left to wrap up?That's Dragon Wing. You are cruising along in what feels like an interesting book with a pretty big cast of important characters that are all heading towards a final confrontation when all of a sudden the (arguably) MAIN character is killed off and just as the final confrontation takes place you reach the chapter called EPILOGUE. This short chapter uses exposition to tell what should have been 5 or 6 real chapters of story.Furthermore, the EPILOGUE makes another of the main characters (Haplo) suddenly seem shallow and unlikable.Another main character (Limbeck, the dwarf) suddenly changes character nearly 180 degrees (according to the EPILOGUE)and goes from timid wannabe leader to brazen war-hero leader. (This happens with other dwarves earlier in the book when in one paragraph you are told how they have become timid and then a few sentences later they have miraculously lost enough of their timidity to take part in a bloody riot.)Prince Bane is so unlikable I can't imagine caring what happens to him in another book.In the end, the characters devolve from complex 3-dimensional people that you are interested in to flat, cardboard, unbelievable people that you don't like or don't believe are real anymore.I can safely say that while I enjoyed the first 2/3rd of the book, I became so disenchanted with the last third of the book that I won't be reading any more of the Dragon's Gate series - or these authors.Fool me once, shame on you - fool me twice, shame on me.

Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman created a wondrous world in their first novel of The Deathgate Cycle. I became immediately hooked on the world that they created and all of the characters have great personality which made me want to continue the series. The only negative I had concerning the book was that in the latter portions the plot tends to stumble into this weird drama and seems to run off the rails a bit. Overall, this stumbling of the plot didn't really bother me too much and this largely doesn't exist in the next two books. This was the first novel by the authors that I have read and I left the book impressed.

Man! Where to start....I first started reading this series long ago, when I was only 14-15 years of age. I always wanted to finish it, but I never could remember the name of the series. I found out the name of the series through relating certain aspects of the books to a blog site on the internet such as; Alfred ( one of the main characters), the first world, describing the air world, Arianus, and other facts that stood out in this series. I tell ya, I'm just as excited, starting this now( 34 years old now), as I was then. Great job, to the authors.....can't wait to read all the books. I highly recommend this series, to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy/science fiction series.

I first read this series years and years ago. At the time, I had to hunt down the individual books in second hand book stores across Ireland and the UK. At the time, the series made a major impact on me, I was lost in Haplo and Alfred and their journey.10, 15 years later I still recommend the Death Gate Cycle as my favourite series ever - so I thought I better go back and reread. I'm happy to report after reading the whole series through again on Kindle my recommendation still stands. This is one of the best series of all time. Do yourself a favour and read it!Weis and Hickman have a defined style that is all their own. The perfect blend of gravity with funny, great characters, incredible worlds, fantastic magic, and just general page turning amazingness. The best part is you will fall in love with the characters, and you will desperately miss them when they are gone.In regards to Dragon Wing in particular, it is a great start to the series. Although you start in a narrow storyline in relation to all the storylines that occur throughout the series, it is the fundamental lynch pin of the story. I love book 1 Haplo :) Don't want to give away any spoilers, but the journey and growth of the two main characters throughout this series is one of the most convincing and enjoyable I have ever read.I highly recommend this book to anyone considering. Even if this isn't normally what you think your 'thing' is, I honestly believe the Death Gate cycle is one of those transcendent series that rises above genres. It's really about the human story.

Fast shipping and a great read!

My family has its roots in Rhode Island since its original founding and I was born and raised in Newport. This compendium is stunning and well worth the purchase price.

Did not realize it was all pictures. Mo real historical narratives. Hard to fully appreciate on a kindle. Guess I didn't read review carefully enough.

Arrived quickly and as expected.

There were many great pictures in this book. A nice collection. I would like to have seen comparison pictures of the same areas next to the originals. This would have made it a five star rating for me.

Good Moms Have Scary Thoughts: A Healing Guide to the Secret Fears of New Mothers

Review

This brilliant little book is chock-full of truths about the common realities of new motherhood. Once again, Kleiman says what we are all thinking and too scared to say out loud. With comic relief, she puts it all out there! --Catherine Birndorf, MD co-founder of The Motherhood Center of New YorkLearning about important subjects doesn t always have to come in a textbook! Karen Kleiman has done it again. A powerful and relevant book to inform, to enlighten, and to treasure. This book should be read by every new mother, everyone who loves her, and every single healthcare provider. --Diana Barnes, PsyD, editor of Women s Reproductive Mental Health Across the Lifespan"With humor and honesty, this illustrated self-help guide for new mothers offers an alternative to the earnestness of more traditional books on the subject. Eschewing the typical advice and information about baby care, the comics and information are entirely devoted to the experiences of women who have recently given birth. Difficult topics such as postpartum depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder get frank discussion, and the tone is reassuring without diminishing the potential seriousness of these issues. The illustrations are sunny and relatable, depicting women of diverse ethnicities and body types. The format is especially effective in conveying, through speech and thought balloons, the differences between what new mothers might say and what they are really feeling... New mothers will find this work a reassuring companion in a challenging time. (Mar.)" --Publishers Weekly

This beautifully illustrated book offers a much needed view of the private lives of new mothers and the thoughts and emotions they navigate on a daily basis. It provides new moms with tools and resources to manage and cope with these changes and most importantly, advises what a mom should do when she recognizes she is not coping well! Because we don't talk about the unpleasant but very real thoughts and fears involving motherhood, too many new moms struggle alone feeling inadequate and failing at the one thing they waited their whole lives to do! I wish every new mom was given this book and reassured that despite the thoughts and feelings she might be experiencing she can and will be a "good mom!" Dr. Laura Meyer, LMFT, LMHC

This is truly a wonderful little book!! I am grateful to Karen Kleiman for writing this accessible, supportive, inexpensive and warmly written book for new mothers! It makes a great gift! I plan to refer all the new moms I see in my private practice to it. Jessica Flint, LCSW

Every page speaks to the private, and often shameful thoughts we keep inside as mothers. It is such a validating read, and one of the most honest depictions of postpartum adjustment I have yet to encounter. It’s also probably one of the easiest forms of reading to digest for a sleep-deprived mama, or a person going through one of the toughest times in their lives — when a lengthy tome may not be the best thing. -- Alexis Barad-Cutler, founder of Not Safe For Mom Group (notsafeformomgroup.com)

The material in this book was great. The copy that I received was a second. The pages were not finished and the pages were folded. I would not buy from this source again.

Love it! Thanks!

The book was in good shape, and exactly what I wanted. Beautiful cover and photos in the book. Well worth the purchase.

Happy with

Very pleased

I have been a fan of David Stoecklein's work for many years, and he continues to outdo himself with each new endeavor. This book is no exception. His love of horses and the west, combined with his overall vision, unique photographic eye and technique make this book truly exceptional. The variety of shots and his use of angles and light will keep you turning each page with anticipation. You feel as if you have snuck into the horses world, without the horse knowing that you are there. He successfully captures the western horse in a way that portrays them as they are: stunning, magnificent animals, deserving our our appreciation and respect. Even those who are not 'horse' fans per se, will appreciate the depth and breadth of Mr. Stoecklein's style.

This is one of the most beautiful bookes I have ever read. It has an excellent section on what the colors of horses mean as well as information on how horses came to be in America, what has happened to Indian ponies, and breed histories. This book also contains poetry from Sue Wallis. I bought this book for the pictures, but the text as definatly proved to be worth while as well.

This is by far one of the best horse related books out there. Not only are there tons of beautiful pictures but its full of so much information, from colors to trainers... great buy! definately worth your money!!!

Gathering Blue (Giver Quartet), by Lois Lowry

Review

"Lowry returns to the metaphorical future world of her Newbery-winning The Giver. . . . Plenty of material for thought and discussion here, plus a touch of magic and a tantalizing hint about the previous book’s famously ambiguous ending." (6/15/00) Kirkus Reviews with Pointers"Lowry is a master at creating worlds, both real and imagined, and this incarnation of our civilization some time in the future is one of her strongest creations." —Booklist, starred review (6/1/00) Booklist, ALA, Starred Review

When used together Lexile measure help a reader find books at an appropriate level of challenge, and determine how well that reader will likely comprehend a text. When a Lexile text measure matches a Lexile reader measure, this is called a "targeted" reading experience. Gathering Blue, the second in the Giver quartet by Lois Lowry, follows the story of Kira, an orphaned girl. In a world where physical differences are shunned and the bearers cast out, Kira finds herself alone and vulnerable when her mother suddenly dies. As her only protector, Kira’s mother valiantly fought for the disabled girl’s right to exist in such a harsh community. Without her, Kira has become a target of certain villagers looking to claim the land where her home once sat, even if it means expelling her from the community. After being called into a hearing with the Council of Guardians to determine her fate, Kira is pleased to learn that her life will be spared due to her special talent. Under the watchful eyes of the Guardians, Kira undertakes the daunting task set before her by the Elders, and in doing so discovers things about herself and her community that she never would have imagined possible. While this is the second book in the Giver quartet, I find if only fair to note that there aren’t any characters from the original novel in this book. Set in the same dystopian future Earth, Kira’s village is less advanced and the residents have life harsher. Where the Giver had an almost futuristic feel to it, through their advancements and gadgets, Gathering Blue has a very medieval feel, where all but the most privileged of residents reside in clay and thatch “cotts” with little to no food. I ended up reading this as part of a Summer reading challenge with my 10-year-old and I honestly can say that I don’t think I ever would have read it otherwise. But now that I have read it, I want to read the remaining two books to see where this all goes. With both Gathering Blue and The Giver, Lois Lowry has created a fictional dystopia that has a hint of real life and modern prejudices and thoughts woven in. No, modern day America does not cast out the infirm, disabled or elderly; but we do have a way of treating them as less of a person unless they have something that we want or a knowledge that we can use. Gathering Blue brings that issue to the forefront in such a way that will cause the reader to think about Kira’s situation and hopefully be kinder to those around them.

This one is probably took me the longest to read out of all 4 of the books. If you agree, just keep reading - it gets so much better! Once I got toward the end, I flew through it and then flew through the next two books.Gathering Blue is not seemingly related to The Giver (or so we think); it takes place in the same universe, but a totally different type of community - almost an exact opposite of Jonas's community in The Giver. Kira's village is more primal; if you can't contribute and fend for yourself, you're useless. Kira, who suddenly finds herself parentless and alone in this hostile world, must find a way to prove herself to her community, despite being crippled. Her only friend in the world is a kind little boy, Matty, and his canine companion, Branch. Kira, with no parents to defend her place in the village, must face the judgement of the council. It is the council that decides Kira's fate - and to her surprise, they motion for her to remain in the society, and contribute the same way as her mother, through sewing and embroidery. It is through exercising her skills that Kira discovers her strange powers that she cannot explain, and uncovering dark secrets held by the village.

After reading The Giver and loving it I went to see the movie, which was such a powerful film!!! I was definitely riding a high from this book and was eager to continue the series. Before I started reading The Gathering Blue I learned that it did not however, follow Jonas, nor was it based on his community that he lived in. So, I approached this story, saddened, but with the knowledge and understanding that it was to be a completely different story. There were some things that I did like about The Gathering Blue, but overall I thought the story was very slow, and it took a long time for things to happen, or events to unfold in this story v.s. The Giver.I did like that this story took place I guess you would say in the same "world" as The Giver, but in a different community with its own set of unique rules. For those of you wondering if you should read The Gathering Blue to continue the series my answer is still yes, while this book is harder to get through, I can see where certain characters will play an important role in the books to come. I have already started book three in the series , The Messenger, and some of the secondary characters from The Gathering Blue are now Main characters in The Messenger. I am not far in the book right now, but I can confirm that Jonas and Gabe both make an appearance.

I found the writing in this novel not nearly as compelling as "The Giver." There is exactly one character who is delineated well, and that is Matt. Also, frankly, his dog.In "The Giver," I could see, hear, and imagine the characters. In this book, I could not. I have no idea what Kari looks like, besides her crippled leg. Almost none of the characters have names, beyond being called the butcher, the weavers, the tykes, the people who live there in this unspecified community where everyone is cruel. We see no descriptions whatsoever of Kari's supposedly magical threading. We just get endless lessons on plant dyes. There is some description of Thomas's carving, and a little bit of Jo's singing. However, there is not enough explanation to be compelling and make you wonder why these particular children are so magical, and craved and imprisoned by the evil portions of the elite community.I thought I paid too much for this ultimately unsatisfying book. I really want to see more about Jonas, whose gift was more fully and joyfully described. I will look for subsequent books at my library, and buy them if they prove to be better than this last one.
