I love having pieces in different styles for my students, and this book is full of fun, accessible, and well-graded pieces in a wide variety of styles. I especially love her rags, because they are excellent precursors to Joplin as far as style and character, but composed with small hands in mind. Unlike other collections, which seem like watered-down or overly-simplified arrangements of more advanced repertoire (also usually full of inaccurate rhythms and unmusical shortcuts), this collection is made up of actual compositions written for pianists at each particular level. They make great recital pieces, and are extremely helpful for teaching rhythms, bass lines (and working on LH technique), and chords. This series complements any method book and is extremely reasonably priced for the amount of music in it.

Really like Martha Mier’s books. Several of the ones in this book are favorites of mine to play and sound great beyond their beginner skill level. I prefer the Jazz/Blues music; not a big fan of ragtime, but I’ve played them anyway. Examples of all can be found on YouTube so always a good place to go to hear how it should sound. I’ve started book 2 and hope to get skilled enough to finish and move to book 3!

I’m a piano teacher and I always use these books as an introduction to jazz. I use these books with every student and every student so far has been amazed with how great it sounds, how confident they feel, and how much they grow when I introduce these books. Each song is two or three pages long, so it doesn’t get too overwhelming for easily-overwhelmed students. A good balance of upbeat rags and slower ballads, my students never get bored and I never get sick of the same old thing over and over.My students enjoy playing these books and I enjoy teaching out of them! Martha Mier does it again. I love everything I’ve purchased by her and my Jazz, Rags, and Blues are by far my favorite.

Martha Mier never disappoints... and this is the first of one of the best series she has ever written. If you have a level 2 student, and you need a student saver song, this book will give you several. These are inevitably the first songs chosen to play at every single concert we have.

I teach piano and these arrangements are so cute and teach syncopation. They are all original. Every song is cute.

My piano students love this book. It is full of cool- sounding upbeat pieces.

Two of my students love this book.

Good

This book deserves 10 stars!!! Just got it today after I pre-ordered it and I really wasn't expecting too much...boy was I wrong. It's not just Atari cover art but some pretty detailed information from the artist on some of the covers. Images of unused covers along with pencil and color studies done by the artists on some of the covers. Fantastic...I mean fantastic scans of the art. I mean I could go on but if you love art it's a must...if you love Atari it's a must. The perfect coffee table book and one I won't be putting down for a while.Oh, Also there is also small bios on the artist and a quick history of the Atari consoles with some industrial design art of the models. This is how you do a Art of book! Major props to Tim Lapetino on putting this together.

I received my Atari 2600 for Christmas of 1978 and spent the next 4 years entrenched in everything Atari - from the games, to the manuals that were included, to the boxes themselves. Spending all of my spare change in the arcade during the days, I'd come home and play my Atari for hours before bedtime: Dodge 'Em, Night Driver, and Combat were my first. Then came the onslaught of arcade conversions; Space Invaders, Missile Command, Asteroids. Going to the mall or department store meant another chance for me to be able to look over those wonderful boxes and stare at the artwork hinting at the wonder that they contained. This book takes the reader back to those days and the overall magic and wonder of the early home videogame years. It's more than just pictures of box art - it's stories, personal accounts, history, and informative facts about the early world of Atari. This book is a must buy if, like me, you were in your "prime" years during the late 70's and early 80's. It is going to find a permanent place on my coffee table and will be a source for conversation for many years to come. Thanks to everyone who put this book together!

Excellent book. This book is stuffed with many photos, pictures, and descriptions. There is a History section with photos of the people that worked at Atari. There is a section containing many games, the artwork used for the covers and also a screenshot of the gameplay. The screenshot is small and it would have been nicer to have the screenshot be double the size. There are photos of the consoles, and descriptions about them. The book measures 11.25" H x 10" W x 1.125" D. It's a hardcover book. The binding seems to be strong and sturdy and seems like it will last over the years. I've attached several photos with samples pages from the book. The book contains 351 pages.

Those of us old enough to have started gaming on the Atari 2600 remember that those graphics tended to be somewhat...underwhelming. Playing classic games like Adventure, Combat, Circus Atari and Superman it helped if your imagination could fill in the blanks, and nothing helped that process along like the packaging your game came in. The art on the boxes and instruction manuals laid the foundation for the worlds that the Atari's processor could never actually display on screen.I've been saying for years that I'd love a collection of that art in a book and I'm thrilled that someone finally did it. Anyone who spent the late 70s hooked on these games should love seeing the high quality reproductions of the art and learning some history about the talented folks who made them all happen. If you're one of us early Gen-Xers this book is for you.

This is truly a fantastic book, and an amazing value for the treasures it contains. After making a recent pilgrimage to the American Classic Arcade Museum, I’ve had a renewed interest in arcade and vintage console machines. People forget just how ground-breaking and influential Atari’s game and industrial design was over a generation of kids. This was a company unrestrained by finance, precedent, or expectations. At Atari, everything was on the table, and the misfires are as intriguing as the successes. In an era where most homes didn’t have or hadn’t even heard of a “personal computer,” where Neuromancer and The Matrix were years or decades away, computers and video games had a magical lure about them. These were The Mysteries of the 21st century. This was the time of Tron, pre-internet, pre-Pixar, pre-cell phone, pre-Warcraft, when new digital technology was materializing almost faster than we could figure out what it meant or how to use it.Atari games (and their contemporaries) were a social and imagination-firing activity – the world of the game was only partly on the screen. The genius of the appeal was how these games kept firing your imagination long after you unplugged and were engaged in a completely different activity. The skill of Atari’s art and design personnel made this magic happen.Art of Atari captures these memories perfectly, treating them respect, framing them, curating them. This book is a trove of information from the era, containing not just well-known stuff like the E.T. debacle (debunked, by the way in these pages), but going into interesting trivia even 80’s junkies like me only have a passing knowledge of.Graphic art? Fine Art? Industrial design? Even fonts (yes – the freakin’ box fonts!) are all represented here, in spades. This book is a boon of pre-Illustrator, pre-Photoshop, old-school analog art and methods. It’s invaluable as a time capsule, educational resource, and nostalgia device. My only quibble – if it can be called one – is the underrepresentation of Atari’s vast number of arcade machines. By covering all things Atari, this book admirably covers a breadth of detail, but it does so by sacrificing scrutiny of Atari’s design and social influence outside the home. Perhaps for another book..? A similar treatment of the “arcade era” is long overdue. But all in all – Well worth the wait. The reign of Atari is long past, but I hope this renews an interest in the art itself – many of these iconic cover pieces (Asteroids, Vanguard, Star Raiders, Missile Command, I could go on and on) deserve reproduction release.

EXCELLENT retrospective of Atari's very memorable graphic design and art....MOSTLY focuses one the home games, unfortunately not too many pictures of the Arcade Cabinet side art, but the entire history of all of the home game systems is very well represented here- Also some spotlights on the artists and many REALLY COOL pieces of art that few got to see...A great book for any fan of classic early 80's video games

Amazon.com Review

Multiple time-lines and alternate branching destinies are more often associated with science fiction than horror, but in this novel by an African-American woman, a man who has cheated death finds that his ability to walk through doorways in time brings dark forces into his life. Due employs a lucid, almost stately, prose style to evoke an escalating sense of menace toward a middle-class American family with connections to Ghana. Dreams? Madness? Ghosts? A racist killer? What is happening to these people?

I am kicking myself for not having read Tananarive Due prior to this month. I think this was the perfect choice for the Ladies of Horror Fiction community read-along not only because it's a great story and I think it will please a wide variety of readers, but because maybe some readers like me have been introduced to Due's work. Note: This book calls out to be read over a short period of time...it is a page-turner.SO - this is a DEBUT novel. WHAT?!? The level of craft in writing, world-building, and so much more, is astronomical. And this is NOT an "easy" plot - there are storylines and threads all over the place. I found myself wondering how all of this could possibly come to a fitting (and realistic) end. Silly me. I needn't have worried. If you are picking this up for the first time, be prepared for "wait, what's happening" but have faith that all will culminate in an ending that makes you sit back and go...whoa. I even returned to the preface of the novel and found little bread crumbs leading me through this forest of a novel and out to the other side. There is so much more I could add. This book grabbed at all sorts of my emotions - fear, apprehension, humor, sadness (there were tears, people), and I loved it. The horror elements shine through and those dream sequences are truly creepy. I plan to make my way through Due's entire backlist, starting with The Good House and the start of the African Immortals series, My Soul to Keep. With The Between as her debut, I eagerly anticipate seeing how her writing evolves from here.

Loved this book - though I must admit to being spooked by it as well. I'm a big fan of Due's African Immortals series and wanted to check out her earlier work. The Between is Due's first novel, and what a promising beginning for her later, well-deserved, success. She shows a deft touch at weaving horror with everyday life, building strong characters that appear to come apart as the suspense builds, but who continue to evolve as the story advances. I'm a scifi and spec fiction fan, generally avoid horror because its scary (I know, lame, but true), but I was enthralled by this story. Due also is unflinching in setting her story in the midst of racial realities in America, without the story becoming "about" race. No simple profiling, either, with beauty and warts shared by all of the characters regardless of race or gender. She has a voice I will continue to want to hear!

Very good but haunting story about a man, Hilton James who has experienced a near death drowning as a child; he is saved by his Grandmother who perishes. Hilton manages to build a successful life and has a loving family but experienced horrible nightmares and still can't quite shake the feeling that he is living on borrowed time. After his wife begins to receive racist hate mail and experiencing another 'near miss', Hilton's nightmares return as he seemingly begins to descend into madness. As a reader I was fascinated by this story as I tried to pinpoint whether Hilton was (a) drowning as his wishful life flashed before his eyes; (b) truly going mad; (c) dying as a result of the second near miss incident and again having his life flash before his eyes. A huge clue (for me) about the inevitable ending was during Hilton's visit with his Aunt & Uncle as they recounted his near drowning. The flow of the book is excellent with descriptive details about Hilton, his family, co-workers, clients & therapist that drew me into the story almost instantly. It was also really helpful that his dream sequences are broken up into their own chapters and italicized. The book was also a quick read and compelling enough that I never 'lost' the storyline if I wasn't able to read it every day.I'm so glad that I discovered this author but almost missed out - I'm still somewhat of a newbie to this genre after having discovered the L.A. Banks series about a year ago. Tananrive Due's books appeared on the Amazon suggestions list and I was intrigued enough by the synopsis of this book to give it a try; needless to say I have since purchased as many of Ms. Due's books as I could find and can't wait to read them all.

This was definitely a book you have to pay attention to as there are a lot of different elements throughout the story. It was a good supernatural read that had just the right amount of scare. I really liked all the characters and the way it was written. I look forward to checking out other works by Tananarive Due.

I WAS SOMEWHAT HESITANT TO PURCHASE THIS NOVEL BASED ON THE SUBJECT MATTER HOWEVER I HAD READ 'THE BLACK ROSE' AND WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE WRITING SO I TOOK A CHANCE. THIS BOOK IS ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD. IT'S NOT OFTEN THAT A BOOK ABOUT THE EXISTENCE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH, REALITY AND FANTASY IS WRITTEN BY AN AFRICAN AMERICAN AUTHOR. THE BEST PART ABOUT THE BOOK WAS THAT IT WAS WRITTEN IN SUCH A MANNER THAT THE READER NEVER KNEW WHETHER THE EVENTS WERE REAL OR A BYPRODUCT OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS IMAGINATION...REALITY OR FANTASY. THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE THE BOOK IS TO IMAGINE THAT IT IS TOLD FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF SOMEONE SUFFERING FROM A MENTAL DISEASE SUCH AS PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENIA. ONE NEVER KNOWS IF IT IS REALITY OR FANTASY. THE NOVEL ALSO COULD BE DESCRIBED AS SURREAL. ALL IN ALL, THOUGHT IT WAS A VERY CREATIVE WAY TO TELL A STORY AND IT ALWAYS KEPT THE READER GUESSING. IF YOU LIKE DEAN KOONTZ AND STEPHEN KING NOVELS, THIS IS SIMILIAR BUT WITH AN AFRICAN AMERICAN TWIST. I LOOK FORWARD TO READING 'MY SOUL TO KEEP' WHICH I ORDERED BEFORE I COMPLETED THIS NOVEL. THE AUTHOR DID A GOOD JOB ON THIS NOVEL

The story gives the reader a good mystery. The characters are written in great detail with the main protagonist grappling with his sanity.

Ten Years That Shook the City: San Francisco 1968-1978, by Chris Carlsson

Review

"Militant urbanist and writer, Chris Carlsson, has brought together a brilliant collection of essays by historians and memoirists of a neglected decade that reveal the originality and solidity of social movements which, despite tragic failures, have guaranteed that San Francisco would maintain a utopian vision of what is possible. Each contribution is a jewel, storytelling at its best." --Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz, author of "A Outlaw Woman: A Memoir of the War Years, 1960-1975""What a vivid, well-written tour through the wide range of community struggles and movements in this most political of American cities." --Chester Hartman, author of City for Sale: The Transformation of San Francisco"Ten Years That Shook the City is a brilliant palimpsest of a time and a place: San Francisco in a revolutionary decade that changed just about every part of the city and everything about how we live today. This magnificent collection brings together voices from the cutting edges of feminism, gay liberation, Latino and Asian mobilizations, environmentalism, community housing and more, and proves once again what an extraordinary city we have the good fortune to inherit." --Richard Walker, Professor of Geography, University of California, and author of The Country in the City and The Conquest of Bread"Ten Years that Shook the City examines the early history of many of San Francisco's cultural treasures that provide the bedrock for today's social change efforts. Written by people who were active in building the everyday institutions we now take for granted, the collection examines the radical democratic ethos that still permeates the city's politics and cultural life. This is a vital resource, which provides the backstory for all of us who came to San Francisco because of its radical culture and politics." --Dorothy Kidd, Professor of Media Studies at the University of San Francisco"I absolutely love this book. It's quirky, interesting, and practical. This is a travel guide that you will pick up just to read, in addition to using it for finding Beat destinations to visit. Beat Atlas has my highest recommendation." --Rick Dale, The Daily Beat"What did happen in the years following the storied 1960's? Did political and social activism die away, move to the country, or get co-opted by the mainstream? Clearly not, as detailed in this new book of essays, edited by local community activist and historian, Chris Carlsson. Primarily first-person accounts, each chapter is chock full of stories from the front lines, written by participants who organized, agitated, and created social change in the city well into the 1970s and beyond. Currents run together from the anti-war and labor movements, gay and women's liberation, struggles against redevelopment and racism and towards the building of cooperatives, ecological awareness, and political art and culture. Gathered together, these snapshots of activism tell a powerful story, showing how the groundwork was laid for much of the progressive movement that still exists today in San Francisco. The lessons of continuity are strong, with the foundations of many of today's institutions and organizations rooted in the radical political and cultural movements from this time period." --Susan Goldstein, City Archivist, San Francisco Public Library"For anyone who lived through San Francisco's greatest years, the 1960s and 1970s, this book is a treasure-house of reminders, information and perspectives on what happens when a community really AWAKENS politically, ecologically and socially. No-one has ever done a better job of capturing this than Chris Carlsson in this book. For those who were not here, settle down and learn what the 60s-70s cultural revolution in the city may teach us about how we should deal with a difficult future. This is great reading for anyone." --Jerry Mander, author of Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television

San Francisco is an unforgettable city with a spirit, vibrance, and energy still there. In reading this book which is a collection of essays about life in the city from 1968 to 1978. The decades ends on the twin tragedies of Jonestown followed by the assassination of Mayor George Moscone and his openly gay supervisor Harvey Milk only 9 days later. The end of the sixties opened the minds, eyes, and ears to a war in Vietnam met with criticism and doubt. The Berkeley campus of the University of California became a symbol of rebellion in a non-violent matter. They held protests against injustice and outrage with passions and convictions. Besides Vietnam, they were still plenty of protests and movements to correct injustice in other avenues. This book offers a rare insight into the worlds where immigrants were poorly treated as well as Native Americans in the city. The city like San Francisco has a mixture of peoples from all walks of life. I was stunned by the racism that occurred in the predominantly African American section known as Fillmore which was occurring as well. There was a sense of old versus new in the city. It broke my heart reading about thousands of Victorian homes demolished. I don't know if it was for low income housing.San Francisco reminds me a lot of New York City with the gentrification process. Both cities are expensive for the average person. The West Village in New York City and the Castro in San Francisco were once the center for the gay movements. Today, the West Village is so gentrified and family oriented that something got lost along the way just as the Castro probably has lost that vibrance of protest and cries for justice.People of all walks of life including women, African Americans, the gay and lesbian communities, immigrants, and other disenfranchised minorities fought back in those years against the injustices, inequality, and degradation. Still, it goes on but now the passion and the flair for change has moved on or moved away from the central location. The main reason that I bought this book was to read about Jonestown and the Peoples Temple. There was only three pages to the topic. Matthew Roth wrote about his communal experience. The Peoples Temple in the 1970s offered a variety of services including drug and alcohol addiction; counseling; food; shelter; jobs; and a purpose for their members. The tragedy in Jonestown may have been far removed but the remains took more than 6 months to finally be placed at Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland, California. Following the massacre, the remains were at an air force base in Dover, Delaware (three thousand miles away).I was glad that the author reached out to Laura Johnston Kohl (author of Jonestown Survivor) for her contributions to understanding the tragedy around Jonestown. I was surprised that Congressman Leo Ryan's name was omitted from the text. In fact when the authors were describing the housing politics, they didn't cite the fact that Rev. Jim Jones was on the housing authority board as gratitude from Mayor George Moscone for helping him win the election.Still, there is so much to talk about with San Francisco and a time that I wished that I had live through where anything was possible. I felt that then Governor Ronald Reagan was far more liberal than we imagined regarding gay rights which isn't surprising since he was from the Hollywood entertainment scene.I could sit here and write forever till I'm blue in the face about this city and this time period. I still miss San Francisco even though I've only been there once in 1999. The city is hospitable, friendly, liberal, and welcoming at times. The city has it's share of problems such as homelessness, drugs, alcohol addiction, high cost of living, etc. but it's still one of the best cities in the world.I wished the editor had included a map or maps of the area. There is plenty of visuals such as cartoons and posters and murals highlighting the city's art importance. The book has a variety of interests besides women's rights, gay rights, cartoonists, musicians, murals, Vietnam war, and others to attract the interest of the readers. There is a section even devoted to ecology and organic food long before it became fashionable.Still, San Francisco has always been on the edge in leading the future. If only more of us would return to stand up for the injustices all around us. That was the meaning of San Francisco during this era, it was to stand up and fight until we all lived equally and just in our society. All I can say is that I love and miss San Francisco and can't wait to go back there for a visit or more.

All kinds of great information about a wonderful city at a time when new ideas struggled for life.

Excellent essays on Third World Strike and Black Panthers and Third Worldism in the Bay Area. Also essays by Pocho-Che editors and publishers. Interesting and important histories that aren't normally circulating.

I loved the chapter written by Mary Jean Robertson considering I've met her in real life. She took an AIS class with me and her chapter was very useful for writing my term paper. I never even knew about the occupation of Alcatraz during the 1960s nor was I aware of the positive impacts it gained for American Indians at the time. I think the occupy movement going on today should look back at the occupation that happened then and get some pointers. The 1969 Occupation of Alcatraz made headlines news and managed to capture the support of not only the media but also the public. It's a highly engaging read and I would recommend it to anyone.
