Valerie Solanas: The Defiant Life of the Woman Who Wrote SCUM (and Shot Andy Warhol), by Breanne Fahs

From Booklist

The radical feminist author Valerie Solanas (1936–1988) ensured her “fifteen-minutes of fame” when she shot artist Andy Warhol in his New York studio in 1968. The shooting brought notoriety to Solanas’ SCUM Manifesto, a brash, aggressive, and startling touchstone for feminism, which celebrated “gender dystopia” and urged total government overthrow as well as the “complete elimination of the male sex.” Biographer Fahs recounts the way Solanas symbolized the anger and contentious climate of the era’s sexual politics and, through her public trial, became a polarizing force for NOW and the feminist movement. Relying on letters and first-person interviews, Fahs thoroughly traces the fractured narrative of Solanas’ life and her ongoing mental illness, while never dismissing the fiery brilliance of her ideas. We follow Solanas from prostitution at the Chelsea Hotel to incarceration at Bellevue Hospital; from Black Panther meetings to performances at Warhol’s Factory and publishing negotiations at the Village Voice. Fahs’ account paints a vivid picture of the chaotic 1960s milieu, paralleling Solanas’ personal struggles with the seeming collective madness of her counterculture setting. --Lindsay Bosch

Review

“There’s no question that Solanas’s belief in the necessaity of theorizing “from the gutter” would have her denouncing today’s inclusive, increasingly professional landscape of feminism. But perhaps she can rest easier (if not in peace) knowing that Fahs has painted a sympathetic portrait of her uncompromising life that—for better and worse—wears its powerful ugliness on its sleeve.” —LA Review of Books“Solanas was a revolutionary artist, and the more time passes, the more significant and prescient her revolution appears to have been, which is in many ways all she ever cared about. How magnificently powerful, to maintain humor, insight, and self-confidence in the face of so much violence. A biography of Valerie Solanas then, hell yeah. You should go read her manifesto and then you should go read this.” —The Brooklyn Rail"Rather than focusing on the Warhol shooting, Fahs gives a refreshing degree of weight to not only SCUM Manifesto—and its contribution to the birth of radical feminism—but also to Solanas’s earlier writings and creative pursuits, such as her playwriting and attempts at publishing in periodicals. Fahs, who interviewed her subject’s family, friends, enemies, as well as Warhol associates, doesn’t shy away from how hated and feared Solanas was by many feminists of the era, such as Betty Friedan, but she portrays Solanas as melancholy, warm, and emotionally broken, as well as violent and combative. While some characters pop up and drop away depending on their relevance to Solanas’s life in the moment, giving a disjointed feel to the narrative, Fahs ably fills a notable gap in feminist history with this accessible volume." —Publishers Weekly"Valerie Solanas is a biography of a compelling, charismatic, contemptible, and incorrigible woman. It is a biography of the effects of class in the United States on one woman’s life. It is also the biography of an artist. Fahs ends with Solanas’s own words from her 1977 corrected SCUM Manifesto: 'The true artist is every self-confident, healthy female; and in a female society, the only Art, the only Culture, will be conceited, kookie, funkie females grooving on each other, cracking each other up, while cracking open the universe.'"—Lambda Literary Review“This is an astonishing book about an astonishing life. It is a stark epic of a woman who was a symbol in and of an era. Valerie Solanas tells us many of the brutal facts of Valerie’s existence, both before she exploded onto the scene in New York in the mid to late 1960s, as well as afterward. She was larger than life: a genuinely heroic figure. What I appreciate most about Fahs’s biography is that Valerie Solanas emerges with a dignity that escaped her in life.” —Ti-Grace Atkinson, author of Amazon Odyssey“Valerie Solanas was an enigma, an outsider even among misfits, and one of the most shocking radicals in a decade teeming with them. Breanne Fah’s book is a long overdue excavation of the obsessions, paranoia, and rage that fueled both Solanas’s visionary manifesto and her appalling attempt to murder Warhol.” —Cynthia Carr, author of Fire in the Belly: The Life and Times of David Wojnariowicz“Finally, a biography of Valerie Solanas that does justice to her brilliant SCUM Manifesto and tragic life. In this narrative, Andy Warhol no longer defines who Valerie was. Breanne Fahs has written a compelling masterpiece sure to become a classic.” —Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, author of Outlaw Woman“Breanne Fahs delivers the crucial backstory behind the deadly yet relevant aims of premier cultural deviant, Valerie Solanas, whose often indefensible edges, war cries, and logic of injury continue to haunt our era of desperate justice.” —Avita Ronell, author of Crack Wars“Valerie Solanas finally provides an in-depth, decade-spanning history of Valerie’s life, including mid-teen pregnancies, anti-essentialist college newspaper rebuttals, SCUM lectures, Up Your Ass casting calls, transience, letters of grammatical corrections to Majority Report, a continual emphasis from various sources on Valerie’s intelligence, radicalism, humor, comedic improve timing, and intensity, and thorough discussions of her work dismantling and repudiating sexuality, gender, morality, marriage, the money system, and the patriarchical status quo.” —Natt Ann Carrera, musician“This compelling biography shows the complexity of Valerie Solanas, placing her in the context of so many later-twentieth-century cultural realities-the commodity explosion of the art world, nuclear family damage and dysfunction, emergent baby-boomer generation narcissism, and the complicated internal struggles of the feminist movement.” —Catherine Morris, Sackler Family Curator at the Elizabeth A. I had never heard of Valerie Solanas until the movie I Shot Andy Warhol. I heard of Warhol, but not Solanas. I had so many questions about her after I saw the movie, this book answers many of them. The book is well researched, it wasn't easy to read by any means, but this was such a great book! Some of the people whom I remembered from the book I got to know in better detail I especially liked how Jeremiah Newton gave Valerie support where he could. I really wished that Valerie would have continued to perservere in getting the help that she needed. I've read some of her SCUM manifesto & having lived through much sexual harrassment found it spot on! Read this book for yourself. A must read for anyone interested in feminist issues. A searing read on the horrible state of the mental health system & a brilliant woman who fell thru it's cracks.

Extremely well-researched bio that is very sensitively written.

Interesting mostly. Quite a unique character, with the dubious distinction of having shot Andy Warhol and ruining his life. Crazy behavior but a voice to be heard. Good writing. 4 Stars.

The author does not understand radical feminism or the work of Valerie Solanas. This is a trendy and shallow treatment of Solanas. Solanas, the woman who fired the opening salvo of radical feminism -- the most revolutionary political philosophy in the history of humanity -- deserves to be understood. A profound disappointment.

An incredibly smart and insightful book on Solanas.

Makes most women I know much more tolerable in comparison! LOL!.

I had no inclination to review this book until Amazon requested a rating. Normally, this wouldn’t be a book I’d choose for my library.I do remember a crazy actress shot Andy Warhol in 1968, but hadn’t given the incident much thought over the past 47 years. During my career in law enforcement, I interviewed many deranged individuals who killed for irrational reasons. I don’t enjoy reading about murder for entertainment purposes. That said, Breanne Fahs has written a cogent, well-researched biography about a troubled woman with serious mental illness… and a typewriter. This is not a sensationalized hagiography. Valerie Solanas comes across as scarier than Medusa, Lorena Bobbitt, Lizzie Borden, Lucrezia Borgia and Glenn Close in “Fatal Attraction” put together. If you were looking for a prom date, Valerie wouldn’t be on your radar. She was not shy about expressing hostility toward potential swain. This misandrist was deadly serious, but not a particularly good shot. Her seminal work was "The SCUM Manifesto." Ironically, her male publisher, Maurice Girodas, turned “SCUM” into an acronym: Society for Cutting Up Men, a catchy name for a sorority of homicidal radical feminists.Males could join SCUM if they took this pledge: “I will kill all men who are not in the Men’s auxiliary of SCUM, work diligently to eliminate myself, do good and play ball with SCUM."After reading further excepts from 'The SCUM Manifesto,' I learned that fatherhood "provides the basis for the male’s major opportunity to control and manipulate.”The best quote comes from cultural feminist Brooke Williams: “Who cares what Valerie Solanas has to say? She should go back to trigger pulling.”Valerie's angry play, "Up Your Ass,” was discussed in the book. Master Author Red Jordan Arobateau, a self-described “butch dike and current Transman,” wrote a glowing review about a 1999 San Francisco Tenderloin performance that begins as follows:“I never got to **** Valerie Solana’s ***** before she died. But I did get to see "Up Your Ass," her well-titled play with its anal, man-hating, trick-scorning, loathing observations of mainstream society and cutting edge humor."A new world has opened for me.Feminism is a large, inclusive umbrella: Liberal Feminism, Anarchist Feminism, Socialist Feminism, Separatist Feminism, Cultural Feminism, Radical Feminism, Anti-Pornography Feminism, Sex-Positive Feminism, Lesbian Feminism, Black Feminism, Chicana Feminism, Asian-American Feminism, Native-American Feminism, Multiracial Feminism, Jewish Feminism, Jewish Orthodox Feminism, Islamic Feminism, Postcolonial Feminism, Third World Feminism, Standpoint Feminism, Libertarian Feminism, New Age Feminism, Post-structural Feminism, Postmodern Feminism, French Feminism, Environmental Feminism, Transfeminism, Conservative Feminism, Men’s Feminism, Contemporary Feminism, Virgin Feminism, Christian Feminism, Darwinian Feminism, Disney Princess Feminism, Deaf Feminism, Eisenhower Feminism, Second Wave Feminism, Third Wave Feminism and even Gidget Feminism. This is great stuff... until the bullets start flying.

As a mildly insane manhater, I fell in love with the scum manifesto a few years ago and I've been ever so curious about Valerie herself but unable to find much information on her until I found this book. I absolutely loved it and found it to be very revealing. thankyou breanne fahs and amazon! :)

fabulous book and author

Bring your hardhat, and be prepared to learn. An old school Biography the delves into the essence of Dickinson, her appeal, myths and mysteries. A forensic scholarly study for which Wolff was clearly well prepared and well armed. Having read Wolff's Edith Wharton, I was ambivalent about undertaking her Dickinson study, Wolff is an unapologetic author who goes where she likes and does not worry too much about who follows, it took some getting used to. But she vindicated herself completely in her treatment of Dickinson and you cannot help but come away the richer for the time spent. Bravo! Ms. Wolff.

Creative subjectivity is an individual riddle guessing game in which multiple observations seek inner feelings to reveal the shift and shuffle of organizing ideas trying to steer collective thinking in cultural confusions. Death rules in ways that only a fool would admit, but the poems which play with brain skewers burning in anything a Zoo Animal song might know how to make the roots grow deeper.

This is the first Emily Dickinson biography I've read so I cannot compare it to others. [At least one reviewer has said this should not be the first biography one reads of Emily; now that I've read it, I can't imagine reading a "beginner's" biography of Emily. The psychological insight this author brings to the table cannot be overstated. Several pages of conversation about non-verbal conversation in the infant-toddler stage is fascinating.]This biography will take a couple of readings. The author has fashioned a narrative of Emily's life, her poetry, the waning of the New England Puritanism, and the history of Amherst all in one exceptionally well-researched biography. The first reading provided a tremendous overview of Emily's life and her lifelong struggle with God, but the analysis of her poetry was often way beyond what I could understand, and thus will require several more readings.Anyone who says they feel they "know" Emily Dickinson is suspect; she remains as much an enigma as ever. Having said that, I feel I have a much better perspective of Emily and am eager to tackle her poetry. The author included a superb 40-page index, an equally superb 52 pages of notes, and a 21-page bibliography. I am very impressed.

The greatest strength of this biography is found in its interpretations of ED's poems. Wolff is a careful and insightful reader, capable of teasing out many layers of meaning in even the most elliptical pieces. Her analyses sometimes left me breathless; there's a special pleasure in discovering new meanings in familiar poems. As noted by another reviewer, Wolff does approach this biography with a kind of agenda. She is most interested in demonstrating how Dickinson rebelled (both in work and life) against the Trinitarian Christianity of her upbringing. Wolff really excels here, and her insight is delicious. Wolff also imbues her readings with a feminist tilt; she never descends into theoretical jargon, but her readings are often skewed by her concern with gender. I wasn't bothered by this, since her interpretations still proved fruitful and provocative. Wolff is weakest in describing ED's relationship with her mother; the psychological bent she brings to this rings a bit hollow for me, and she rides her insight about the infant poet's emotional deprivation through the entire work. Her speculation, in my opinion, isn't helpful or needed. As a life story, this volume isn't quite so complete as it might've been. It's more a work of criticism than biographical scholarship (although Wolff brings much learning to bear in her critiques on ED's work). If you're interested in the specifics of Dickinson's life, I'd recommend starting with Sewall's monumental biography. It's also worth noting that some critics have disagreed with Wolff's commentary on Dickinson's life, particular the poet's childhood (Wolff's take on it is rather bleak, a conclusion not necessarily supported by the historical records). I'm not a Dickinson scholar, so I can't answer to these arguments. I do love ED's poetry deeply, however, and found this book a compassionate and fascinating read.

This work should be read by anyone interested in biography, but not for reasons the author might suspect. Here is a perfect example of biography as personal agenda. Here is biography as a skillfully written---but convoluted---interpretation of the life, letters and poems of Emily Dickinson.Wolff should have written an editorial and clearly marked it as such. However, one good service was provided. My friends and I would read a poem being discussed by Wolff, and then read her "forced" interpretation of it. We had many hearty laughs. But we also felt genuine pity for Wolff. Is this what she has to do to defend her agenda? Does she have no other means?I do not worry about scholars reading this book. In fact they should read it. They will easily discover those parts that are useful---and there are many---and discard the rest. But what about young students? What of those who do not know Emily and pick this book as their first meeting with her?Instead, may I suggest they read "The Capsule of the Mind" by Theodora Ward. It is also a psychological look at Emily Dickinson. Ward is the granddaughter of Doctor and Mrs. Josiah Gilbert Holland, two of Emily's closest friends. Ward was also an assistant to Thomas H. Johnson, Harvard University, the person most responsible for bringing us Emily's letters and poems. In fact, Ward herself was inspired to become a Dickinson scholar when she discovered sixty-five of Emily's letters in her family's attic.Cynthia Wolff, please spare us your politically correct---but factually incorrect---views on Emily Dickinson.Joe Psarto,Westlake,Ohio

I don't usually do reviews , but it was important to me to do this one. When I was looking for a book for the Praxis I saw so many books with such bad reviews, but I still settled for this one. Now, I'm not the smartest cookie in the jar , but I was super determined to pass this test, and this book did the job PERFECTLY. Today I took my test (reading 5712), and I got a 180 out of 200!!! Please trust this review and try this book. I did this for people like me, who want to pass the test, have the determination but are not super smart. I also bought the Kaplan Praxis 11th edition (this is a little old but it offered a good balance). Both books provided a total of four practice test. I also bought a book called REA Praxis Core. mostly because i wanted some more practice test. This book was AWFUL!!! the writing was simple and it didnt provide much strategies, but the test were challenging enough that they opened up my thinking. Therefore, I would still recommend it, but only for the test. You get three practice test. So collectively you will be beyond prepared. Determination is still important though. Best wishes and success

I passed all 3 tests on the first try!For math, I not only used this book, but I also used the Kaplan book as well the study guide on the ETS website and Khan Academy. I didn't use most of the formulas they said to memorize, but I memorized them just in case. The practice tests really helped me to prepare. For reading, this book was wayy harder than the actual test, and it made my confidence low. I felt that the Kaplan book was much more accurate for the reading portion. However, the tips this book suggested really applied to the actual test. During the test, I definitely remember using their tips and I was so thankful it helped me. I got a high score so this book over-prepared me, which I can't complain about. For writing, I saw a lot of the rules of grammar that were mentioned in this book! The essay tips were really useful too.I would 100% buy this book in addition to other resources in order to maximize your chances of passing!

I took each test on different days, and here is my experience with each of them:Reading: The book provides multiple lengthy practice passages that are difficult. On the real exam, many of the questions are much shorter with the exception of a few passages. This practice section is much harder than the actual test. I wasted about first fifteen minutes in the beginning, and still ended up passing on my first try. (There was 10 days from the time I registered for the test, studied, and took the exam).NOTE: I took the exam early in 2018. There is diagrams that are not mentioned in the book that were on the exam. Although they were easy, I was not prepared to answer questions about them.Writing: Both the grammar and writing section matches up with what the book talks about, and it prepared me for the test. I passed my first try above the average score.(There was 10 days from the time I registered for the test, studied, and took the exam).Math: I went through this section once and it seemed to match up with the test (there is a few errors in the book). I took the exam after taking both math classes for teachers, so those two college classes really prepared me for the test as well. I passed my first try, but didn’t do as well as I thought I did. (There was 10 days from the time I registered for the test, studied, and took the exam).Overall: I went into the test thinking it would be much harder than it actually was. I didn’t give myself much time to study for the exam (ten days or less) and still ended up passing on my first try for all three sections. If you study this book along with the free Praxis study companion on their website, you should be fine!

I bought this book after purchasing the Praxis Core review from Kaplan. This book is by far much more superior than the Kaplan review book. I honestly feel that using this book, along with the online portion, contributed to helping me prepare and pass the Praxis Core exam in one go. To break it down--Math: I felt that the math portion in this book was accurate to the math questions that we presented on the exam.-Reading: I felt that the reading portion in this book was actually harder than what was present on the exam. I felt that this portion focused on more in depth, critical thinking than what was presented to me on the exam.-Writing: I felt that the writing portion, the grammar portion, was accurate to the questions that were reflected on the exam. As for the actual essay portion, I felt that there could have been more examples for the research essay portion. There are some errors in this book that have been caught, so do keep that in mind. But overall, those errors are not as comparable to how this book helped me preparing for the exam. I would highly recommend purchasing this book if you are preparing for the Praxis exam. You will not be disappointed!

I just took the Praxis Core last month. This book is excellent for reading, grammar, and writing. However, it doesn't cover half of what is on the actual math test. It is very helpful for teaching you some of the math that is on the test. I failed the math test by 4 points so now I have to take it again. I will be purchasing a different book to help me study.

I took the PRAXIS Core last May using only this as a study guide, and I received a near perfect score - the only part I got less than 200 on was the writing, and honestly there's not much a prep book can tell you about how to write for a standardized test anyway. I'm not saying this book is entirely the reason why I did so well, but it definitely helped me brush up on things I had forgotten as it had been a few years since I was in school, especially the practice exams. Worth the money, definitely.

My husband and I are not computer savvy people, so cybercrime has always been a worry. This book has been an absolute godsend for us. It is well-written, clear and very focused on all of the cyber threats that concern us. Cybercrime is scary and the after-effects are costly and extremely time-consuming, so we are GREATLY appreciative for the tools provided in Mr. Bandler’s book!! It is a must-read for anyone using any type of computer or doing anything on the internet in general. We recommend it highly!

The subject matter scares us and that's why we avoid it. Like many unpleasant things, avoiding the reality won't make it go away. As lawyers and business owners, we must be mindful that this threat is real and that perpetrators continually rise to the occasion by improving their skills. And that's why we as lawyers (or any business owners, for that matter) should read this important and timely book.Lawyer, author, adjunct professor, and former New York City prosecutor John Bandler has written a very clear and concise text to help us address this important topic. Mr. Bandler's background in law enforcement, criminal prosecution, and cyber-security has given him the tremendous experience that is necessary to tackle this important topic.Bandler's attention to detail is second to none, and his focus makes this manual practical and useable. Buy it. Read it. Follow it.

John Bandler has produced an important work that educates attorneys (and non-attorneys) on how best to implement information security into their practices and lives while teaching about cybercrime, privacy threats, computers, networks, etc. The book is written in a way that makes the material accessible to those who don't have a technical or computer background. It really should be on every lawyer's bookshelf.

As a Chief Risk Officer overseeing my bank’s entire risk management program, I was extremely happy to add this book and the practical advice to our arsenal. Information and cyber security isn’t new but the threats and risks are at their highest. I highly recommend this and reaching out to John as we did when uplifting your program.

I found this to be a very accessible resource for someone like me who has limited knowledge of information technology. Its organized in a clear and coherent structure and the content is presented without unnecessary jargon. Its definitely worth the purchase.

#45,144 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The Assault on Intelligence is not just another polemic about a truth free President with a lack of intelligence as to information and cognitive skill. The reason is that it can be read in conjunction with his earlier book Playing on the Edge. Playing was written prior to this presidency and so contains analysis that can not be said to be shaded by the inadequacies of the present incumbent in the White House. These books should be read together. The discussions with President Bush regarding detentions, renditions and interrogations and the briefings to President Obama regarding covert programs in Playing on the Edge show presidents intent on learning the minutia of these actions. Though the author was not in office during the present administration it is clear from his background that he knows how Trump is perceived by the intelligence agencies and why. The classic example he refers to is the visit of the President to the CIA when he talked about how he caught the media in a lie regarding the size of his inaugural crowd. This to a group of people who stake their reputations on checking and rechecking facts which is detailed in Playing on the Edge.During the campaign the incumbent turned the intelligence briefers into political props and campaign tools and alleged that he could tell what they were thinking from body language which it is apparent from Playing would never happen.Interesting, in Assault it is made clear that the intelligence institutions took down Mike Flynn, not the Obama administration. From Playing, it is clear why. From the two books it is apparent that Michael Hayden contributes a cohesive understanding of the full picture of the damage the present administration has done to the professionals in the intelligence community. These books make it clear that agree or not with what covert action has been carried out in the past the average intelligence analyst has reason to wonder whether there is a thinking rational being at the other end of his work product. As a politically liberal reader, these texts make it possible to understand the threat to real facts communicated to the incumbent President in what he might do with them. Marge Haskell Instructor, Political Science Berkeley City College

General Hayden writes very well. There are many informed people writing books about the state of the U.S.; but of those I've read none other is laid out in a chronology, vocabulary and style that will make sense to the general public. Hayden's "Assault on Intelligence" moves as only first class prose can.The warning he sounds isn't the first we've heard since Donald Trump took office; but maybe this one is so clear, so fact-based and so chillingly frightening that Americans of all stripes will begin paying attention. If we do not trust and respect our institutions; we have no government.

General Hayden has, with great clarity, laid out the facts and conclusions of the most dangerous threat to our republic. Never in my lifetime did I expect to see an attack on our most important institutions of justice and intelligence. What is most frightening is the blind eye some in Congress have turned to any corruption and crimes that this administration have committed. This is an excellent book and I thank General Hayden for submitting this work to the ordinary American and to the future citizens of the United States who will seek to understand this dark chapter in our country's political system.

An eye opening insider's view of the death of truth and analytical fact based thinking in America in general and the Trump White house in particular. The extent to which Russian exploit of social media impacted the 2016 election is frightening and incontrovertible. The only think more scary is the willful ignorance of the President and those duped by their own shallow ignorance. The world is a complex place where we need the expertise if the best and the brightest. Hayden shines as one of America's brightest most genuinely patriotic citizens. Unlike our current commander in chief who treats truth and facts as inconvenient irritants. Highly recommended.

Incredibly well written, lots of different references to history, culture. Honest.

General Hayden (USAF, Ret.) was an officer of moderation and discipline when he was serving so this book will surprise those who knew him then. He is unsparing in his criticism of President Trump and the Trump Administration. Hayden has concluded that the President and his team have no concept of evidence based decision making or the difference between truth and falsehood. Hayden of course marshals a good deal of facts to support these conclusions. He was particularly incensed when the President on several occasions referred to the members of the Intelligence Community (IC) as "Nazis" without even thinking about the term. Hayden also is angry at the President's obvious distrust and disinterest in national intelligence reports and findings. Well the supporters of President Trump will undoubtedly ignore this book as an pathetic attempt by the "Deep State" to undermine his presidency while his detractors will consider the book as additional evidence of the President's unfitness for the job.
