In her autobiography, Olympic ski racer Street gives a solid chronology of her career with her independent "I'll do what I want" attitude. Not a typical sports superstar, Street prefers to hang out with her family or old friends. She's also not been a favorite model for magazine covers, since, due to her injuries, her weight has greatly fluctuated. However, it becomes evident that Street cares most about excelling at her sport and when she doesn't perform well, she blames herself and vows to improve for the next competition. Street attributes her atypical traits to her upbringing in Triumph, Idaho a small town near the Sun Valley and Ketchum ski resorts, where she grew up a tomboy and to her parents, who were "hippies" feeding the family from homegrown vegetables and providing the bare minimum. As an adolescent, Street's speed was apparent as she beat many more experienced male skiers. She loved speed but she also loved to please her father, who coached her. Street is charming and sometimes refreshingly honest: "Unfortunately, ski racing is no way to lose weight.... Skiing is also anaerobic. Getting your heart rate up for 90 seconds isn't enough to burn much fat. Then you sit around in the lodge, trying not to eat pastries and French fries. What can I say? I like to eat." Detailed and insightful account of Picabo Street's life and struggle against great difficulties, including her own weaknesses. Still one of the best books for gaining insights into world class skiing. One reviewer criticizes Picabo for being self-absorbed. Apparently he failed to notice that the book is an autobiography. He also overlooked Picabo's self-criticism and acknowledgment of problems she sometimes created for herself and for ski teams.

I love stories of unique people and how they got where they are and this one doesnt disappoint in the least. It takes this gutsy young woman from childhood through accidents and challenges and while you may not like her you'll respect her for her guts and tenacity. She may not be an honor winning girl scout but she gets my vote for teaching us how to succeed. Worth your time.

If you are ever in need of some motivation to make your dreams come true...if you ever doubt your abilities and wonder if "little ol you" can accomplish the impossible....Read Picabo's book.Picabo is a wonderful example of what one person can accomplish, when they put their mind to it!We'll definitely be cheering Picabo on in the 2002 Winter Olympics! I'm sorry this book did nothing for me....A hero? An inspiration? I can not understand how people idolize her...a young man who lives down the street from me who served time in Iraq recently....he's a real hero and inspiration. Picabo Street is another one of those, cookie-cutter, self absorbed athletes who thinks the world revolves around them. Good luck to her...but she'll never have my respect.Steve

Calvin is a name you often hear as one of the greatest theologians of the Reformation and the Institutes make clear why.Since there are already a number of reviews talking about the general significance of Calvin's Institutes and the general contents, I thought I'd make a few points in case you're hesitant to buy this phenomenal book:1. This is a magnificent work of systematic theology and Calvin's famed exegetical skills are on full display. This book will give you both a big picture view with all the shining details that are brought out in Scripture. The work also builds on itself and lays the foundation in the beginning, so as you get past the first half of Book 1, you'll find yourself being able to follow his logic in the later parts of this work.2. Yes, the language can be a bit wooden -- but it gets easier as you read and you'll come to appreciate the richness of the language.3. The translator's footnotes are helpful and worth reading, especially the footnotes on differences between the Latin and French versions. Calvin was aware that those reading his French version may not have had as much of rigorous theological training as a Latin reader, and so he'll add or reformulate statements and comparisons to be more understandable to a lay person.Being able to read this work is being able to sit at the feet and learn from one of the most spiritually gifted teachers in Christianity. It has already been an immense help in my faith by correcting incorrect thinking and will be a book I read and re-read for decades to come.

This is Calvin's benchmark text of Reformed theology. Calvin is one of the magisterial giants on which the Reformation of the Christian church stands, and this work makes the reasons for his stature abundantly clear. Trained as a lawyer before becoming a pastor and theologian Calvin is logical, thorough and relentless in pressing his viewpoints on every aspect of faith addressed in this volume. And it should be added that Calvin is relentlessly biblical. There is no point in his theology that is not thoroughly grounded in scripture. He writes as one who is also well-acquainted with the church fathers as well as the theologians of his day, drawing deeply from that well of knowledge in both building up his position and refuting the positions that he believes are held in error. I read the Battles translation and the style of Calvin's writing comes across as very readable and accessible not just to pastors, theologians and educated lay persons, but to anyone who wants to understand Christian doctrine that is firmly Biblical, which, in a nutshell, is what Reformed theology is all about. I highly commend this enduring work. It is truly a timeless gift to the church.

The is arguably the single most important work on Reformed Theology available, yet I have encountered few who have read it. The printed text is nearly 1500 pages with little that is not challenging or demanding. This is not a quick read, but it is as important as any other writing outside the Holy Scripture.I checked 4 stars for the content. This Kindle version was not very serviceable. Amazon has apparently recognized this and is stopping further sales until it is fixed by the publisher.

I had a very negative view of Calvin before actually reading him. I saw him as cold, forbidding, nasty, etc. Now that I have read him, I know that he was brilliant, devout, easier to read than I imagined, and has more to say in one page than most writers have to say in entire volumes. As a commentator on the scriptures, he is unsurpassed in his integrity. He doesn't ignore any problem, has no agenda except to get at the truth of a passage, and gives attention to all serious objections. Reading him, you quickly sense that here is a theologian who will not lead you where he wants you to go, but will lead you to where the scriptures say to go. The sum of his theology is a magnificent view of life and existence that is majestic and is a perfect summary of the Bible.Calvin isn't cold; he's actually passionately devout.He isn't forbidding; he's far easier to read than you might think. Anyone with average intelligence can make their way through this book (and it will be worth it to do so).He isn't nasty; he was a very holy man and his love for God and the church comes through on every page of this book.I love Luther and used to think that he was the greatest theologian. I enjoy his explosive personality, wit, and sarcasm. Reading him is like reading a brilliant friend who can always be counted on to say something memorable, insightful, and profound. But I now think that Calvin was greater than Luther. While Calvin lacked Luther's very vigorous personality, Calvin's cool head and even temperament produced an intellectual tour de force with this book. Nothing written in the last three hundred years can come close to this book. Really, if you only read this one book of theology, you would need no other. It says it all.

While the second volume of Transmet lost a little of the punch the first volume had, it fails to lose it's must read status. Ellis and Robertson's sci-fi is something I can recommend for everyone.This volume makes a much more focused effort to look at the 'futuristic' elements of the setting. The first few issues explore the issues of human-tech integration, cryogenics, and cultural preservation. But after that, it shifts to exploring Spider's backstory in the last arc. There, we learn a little more about Spider's ex-wife, and what Spider was like before he went up the mountain.One thing I didn't like about this volume was how they handled Channon. I don't want to spoil it, but I hope Ellis does a better job in the future. That said, it's not enough to bring down the whole story. Spend the money, trust me.

Even though subsequent volumes in Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson's TRANSMETROPOLITAN series would surpass this very diverse collection of stories, it is still a first rate addition to the series. It is always outrageous, frequently funny, sometimes absurd, but always stimulating.There two aspects of the series that make it especially interesting to me. First, no other comic series explores the meaning of the media in general and the Fourth Estate in particular. For all his cynicism and rebelliousness, anti-hero Spider Jerusalem is a journalist who believes that reporting should strive to make the world a better place . . . or at least not quite so bad. Sometimes Spider's posing and stunts get in the way of that, but Ellis does manage to get the story back around to that conceit from time to time. Second, the series goes further than any other I know in looking at the furthest extremes of what people will do to remake and reconstruct themselves. Many writers have pointed out that ours is already a Cyborg culture. How else can you characterize someone who has an artificial hip, a pacemaker, and lasik eye surgery? Other writers, like Ray Kurzweil and Hans Moravec, have fantasized about a utopian future in which the human brain is sliced up and downloaded into a database, where one's consciousness can enjoy a virtual immortality (though personally, I just think of this as a bizarre way to die). Many of these notions are taken up and explored in the Transmet series.The two books that begin the series are good, but newcomers should keep in mind that it gets much better in subsequent volumes. So while I recommend this, I even more strongly recommend reading the volumes that follow.

"I Hate it Here." Perhaps this best sums up the personality of Spider Jerusalem, renegade reporter and cynic of the first degree. Disgusted by the world around him, he leaves the city and lives as a hermit.Years after his escape, his publisher drags him back into the city, wanting the books he was promised five years back. Needing money to live in the city, he whores himself out to The Word, a newspaper run by an old friend. These are his "adventures."Spider is brilliant, witty, and cynical. Through his eyes, Ellis gives an outlook of a bizarre future in which Aliens have landed, corporate America manages to advertise in your dreams, and reporters can write off their drug habits as a journalistic expense.This is the second collection of Transmetropolitan, following back on the streets. Reprinted are issues 4-12. Spider is both hostage and witness as events unfold. Fortunately, it's ammunition which he fires right back at the world.Spider can turn anything into an article, from the consequences of cryogenic freezing and restoration to simple Television. He visits reservations from the sensible to the logical extreme, and provides political commentary (And even rearranges their bowels). He encounters death threats and tangles with religion.Let's not beat around the bushes here. This is a comic book. Fancy words aside, it's packages exactly as Spider-Man or Batman would be. That's where the similarities end. This is not aimed at children, and probably shouldn't be read by children. There is blood, gore, nudity, and thought-provoking materialWhat we do have is Warren Ellis' own use of the medium--A twisted, often dark, and humorous look at a futuristic world. his portrayal is brilliant, steps ahead of almost every other writer in the field of comics.Brilliance in such a simplistic medium. Such a refreshing and innovative series.

I liked the first thing. Papery pulp with pictures. I immediately assumed I would hate the second part. It happens. First part is excellent... wah, wah, wah, fail from there. But like a junkie I tried the second volume of this one. ... -contented sigh- Oh yeah. It's good.

Ellis fleshed out his darkly satiric future with foglets, corrupt cops, reservations, and revival shock. The world of the City is still grim, gross,manic, and brightly lit.

Transmetropolitan took me a while to warm up to. But I finally got on board it's 'volume 11' all-the-time future. A satirization of the future based on today's trends - with a protagonists that often seems insane but other times seems like one of the only few sane people.

This is really something I could say is a Graphic Novel without smirking. I'm no veteran when it comes to comics, but I've lent it out to a few people I know that are, and they rave about it as well. It's very much like a Fear And Loathing influenced cyberpunk tale of journalism in a future that, for all its random technical advances, is still populated by people and therefore still plagued by the same kinds of problems we face today.

Not as riveting as the first volume but definitely entertaining. Its an interesting world with great plots to explore in each issue.

Spider is that dude, THIS needs to be made into a movie, so many brilliant concepts of a future Earth.

About the Author

Isaac Kramnick was born in 1938 and educated at Harvard University, where he received a B.A. degree in 1959 and a Ph.D. in 1965, and at Peterhouse, Cambridge. He has taught at Harvard, Brandeis, Yale and Cornell, where he is now Professor of Government. He is married to Miriam Brody Kramnick and lives in Ithaca, New York. Among his publications are Bolingbroke and His Circle, The Rage of Edmund Burke and numerous articles on eighteenth century topics. He has edited William Godwin’s Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, The Federalist Papers by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay and, with Michael Foot, The Thomas Paine Reader for the Penguin Classics. Most recently he is the author, with Barry Sheerman, MP, of Laski: A Lift on the Left.

This book will introduce you to the key texts of the period - in addition to many delightful works of which you may never have heard.Readers looking for pure philosophy will not be disappointed: the anthology contains a fine selection of excerpts from Bacon, Descartes, Leibnitz, Newton, Hume, Kant, and others. But the Enlightenment embodied more than abstract speculation, and Kramnick skillfully arranges sections on science, religion, art, morality, education, history, politics, economics, crime, war, gender, and race.Each topic draws upon a diverse array of authors. This gives the reader a sense of the popularity of Enlightenment thought, as well as its development from the middle of the seventeenth century to the start of the nineteenth. Intellectual giants like Voltaire, Rousseau, and Locke appear alongside a gallery of lesser-known but fascinating figures: Nicolas de Condorcet, mathematician and revolutionary terrorist; William Godwin, anarchist and lover of Mary Wollstonecraft; Olympe de Gouges, early feminist playwright; John Cleland, author of the scandalous Fanny Hill - a vital source for the study of eighteenth-century sexuality, and still hilarious after 270 years.Any collection as ambitious as Kramnick's is bound to have a few faults. I am extremely pleased with my purchase, and I am confident that you will feel the same.

Perhaps the best of the "Portable" series by Viking-Penguin. The book covers the Enlightenment period from approximately 1650 through 1800, and is superbly edited by Isaac Kramnick. Covering such luminaries as Voltaire, Kant, Hume, Locke, Rousseau, Jefferson, Pope, Montesquieu, Franklin, Paine, Bentham, Adam Smith and a score of lesser known philosophers and writers; the book hits on major elements of the era - religion, politics, liberty, race, gender and slavery - among others.Within these 700 or so pages, the book provides the reader with an introduction to the Enlightenment and does so in such a way that there's an appreciation as to the role of this unique era in the foundation of our modern society. The selection of readings were both famous and obscure, but the reader is not left feeling that they didn't get a fair shake at the real elements of the philosophy that fueled the American and French revolutions, led to the establishment of the modern Western democracy, and continues to serve as a foundation of modern political and ethical thought.If there is one book for every student to read before they leave high school, or certainly college, it is this one. A must read.

More than forty years ago, when I was a college undergraduate, I ran across several lists books that were recommended reading for anyone who wanted to be truly educated. Those lists invariably included books such as Rousseau's "The Social Contract," The Federalist Papers, Voltaire's "Candide," and many other writings from the Enlightenment era (as well, of course, as other time periods). I dutifully noted the titles, and, wanting to consider myself an educated person, fully intended to read all of them.Well now I'm 62, and it's time for me to admit that I'm almost certainly never going to read "The Social Contract." This volume is for me and others like me, who are suffering from the "So Many Books, So Little Time" syndrome. The book contains a broad selection of writings from the major thinkers of the Enlightenment, which the editor defines roughly from the 1680's to the 1790's.What a marvelous time it must have been to be an intellectual! The barriers erected by the authority of the kings, priests, and classical writers were being shattered. The ability to ask new questions and propose new answers produced an almost intoxicating sense of infinite possibilities for the improvement - even the perfection - of human society.Some of the pieces in this book will seem hopelessly naive to our modern cynical minds; on the other hand, some of the points being made so excitedly and even belligerently are now taken for granted - and we are likely to read them and say, "What's the big deal? Everyone knows that." And then there are the debates about the most fundamental questions - such as the source of knowledge - that have yet to be resolved, and probably never will be.If you read this, you will almost certainly get caught up in the excitement of the exploration of the ideas. You will almost certainly have your own thoughts stimulated, and your own opinions challenged.And you can smugly pretend that you have read Roussseau, Locke, Hume, Kant, and Voltaire - and no one (except real scholars) will be the wiser.
