We Need New Names: A Novel, by NoViolet Bulawayo

From Booklist

In Bulawayo’s engaging and often disturbing semiautobiographical first novel, 10-year-old Darling describes, with childlike candor and a penetrating grasp of language, first, her life in Zimbabwe during its so-called Lost Decade and then her life as a teenager in present-day America. What is at once delightful and disturbing is the fact that young Darling and her friends are so resilient amidst chaos. Darling must cope with absentee parents gone to who-knows-where, seeking jobs and a better life; abusive adults; and murdering bands of self-appointed police in a country gone horribly wrong. Yet she evinces a sense of chauvinism regarding her corrupt homeland when she joins her aunt in America. There she discovers a country that has fallen into a different kind of chaos, primarily economic. She and her new family struggle while America fails to live up to her hopes. Ultimately what lingers is Bulawayo’s poignant insights into how a person decides what to embrace and what to surrender when adapting to a new culture in a new land. --Donna Chavez

The voice Ms. Bulawayo has fashioned for [Darling] is utterly distinctive - by turns unsparing and lyrical, unsentimental and poetic, spiky and meditative." --- Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times"Bulawayo describes all this in brilliant language, alive and confident, often funny, strong in its ability to make Darling's African life immediate ... She demonstrates a striking ability to capture the uneasiness that accompanies a newcomers arrival in America." -- Uzodinma Iweala, The New York Times Book Review "Bulawayo mixes imagination and reality, combining an intuitive attention to detail with startling, visceral imagery ... This book is a provocative, haunting debut from an author to watch." - Elle"Bulawayo, whose prose is warm and clear and unfussy, maintains Darling's singular voice throughout, even as her heroine struggles to find her footing. NoViolet Bulawayo manages it by forming a cast of characters so delightful and joyous that the reader is seduced by their antics at the same time as finding out about the country's troubles." -- Leyla Sanai, The Independent

We Need New Names is a lush, language-rich narration by a young African girl who gradually becomes an expat in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The narrator's voice has a wonderful innocence, even as she and her playmates (I'd say schoolmates but the teachers have all left the country and the school closed) play such games as "Find Bin Laden." She also has a special gift for capturing expressions on other characters' faces: "like she was hearing music inside her head and dancing to it" is a description of the expression of an aunt who has been complimented by an old flame who is marrying someone else. The disintegration of the home country, the desperate desire to be somewhere else, and the bitterness of those left behind are rendered in muscular, lyrical prose studded with native ("our language" which is never identified) and childish phrases. The description of eating the guavas (on which she used to gorge herself as a child) for the first time since coming to the U.S. Is worth the price of admission: funny, tender, voracious, and yearning. The only piece of this novel that hit a sour note for me was a chapter at the end of the book narrated by a "we" rather than the "I" in every other chapter. It consisted of a lyrical, wild description of the labor of largely undocumented newcomers to the US. While beautiful in its own right, and easily capable of being a brilliant standalone essay, it was oddly out of place, especially as our narrator herself had barely begun to work. It sounded like an angry political squawk in an otherwise equally powerful but more subtle birdsong that is ultimately more personal and persuasive.

NoViolet Bulawayo's debut novel WE NEED NEW NAMES is an original, and a stunning work.It has been identified as a coming of age work--with the central character of Darling. It has been described as having a plot that moves from Darling's childhood in Zimbabwe, to her coming to America, and her experiences as she moves into adulthood.I don't disagree with these descriptions; I just find them inadequate.First, this is definitely not a plot driven work. Certainly you can follow a progressive story line--but the story being told is of an interior landscape rather than a series of external adventures.Second, as the novel progresses, it settles into a shifting kaleidoscope of alternating focus--Darling's experiences; the larger geopolitical scene; and the interior anguish of people unmoored in their place in time and country. This novel is not for the faint of heart. There was at least one chapter that, frankly, I would have rather not read. And the experiences of Darling in Zimbabwe are searing--as befits the current geopolitical scene. There is the genuine heartbreak of leaving and losing one's country. One of the reviews--in the New York Times--wrote about the third chapter from the conclusion."At one point, in an effort to make Darling’s experiences broadly representative, Ms. Bulawayo writes an entire chapter using the plural pronoun “we” — speaking of the move to America, and the bitterness so many immigrants feel, as they are forced to take menial jobs or find their hopes frustrated...Such generalizations are the one misstep in this otherwise stunning novel. Not only because they try to project one point of view onto the experiences of a wide and varied group of immigrants, but also because they are not always true."And as evidence of this assertion, the review writer points out that NoViolet Bulawayo has flourished as an immigrant.TALK ABOUT MISSING THE POINT. Yes, this is a story of an immigrant, and of immigrants. But MORE SO--it is a story about losing one's country, one's connection to ancestors, one's place in the past and the future. For just that near final chapter alone--titled "How They Lived"--WE NEED NEW NAMES is a most compelling work.

This writing in this book is as creative as the author's nom de plume, No Violet. Her unusual use of language in showing the reader life in Zimbabwe through the eyes of a special wise child, becomes part of the reader's experience. Then, she juxtaposes it with her new life in cities she dreamed of in the USA. Neither is perfect. But she is self-possessed enough to navigate and explain the world of immigrants. "Undocumented" has become a loaded word. But her words render humor and compassion. Equal to her favorite book, "The Haidresser of Harare", she shines a light on life in post colonial Africa . Junot Diaz chose her as an outstanding new voice. I agree.

This novel is the story of a young African girl who eventually leaves her homeland to come to America. Her life in Africa is described in rich, textured detail. You really get the descriptive sense of what she was experiencing; the sights, smells, and sounds. Even though she was living in extreme poverty and experiencing political oppression, she managed to create a childhood for herself and her friends. The description of her acclimating to life in cold, snowy Michigan is masterful. So is the development of the second half of the novel, as she tries to balance her life as an American, while trying to retain her African identity. A throughly engaging read.

From Booklist

While working on the manuscript detailing the tragic events surrounding her son’s death and the healing her family found through the love of a special cat (Cleo, 2010), Brown is dealt a devastating one-two punch that sends her fragile world reeling. She is diagnosed with breast cancer, and her eldest daughter announces her desire to move to war-torn Sri Lanka and become a Buddhist nun. Feeling uncertain and needy, Brown struggles with the knowledge that she must let Lydia pursue her own dreams, even though, selfishly, she wants to keep her by her side. Although Lydia returns in time to see Brown through her crisis, her compulsion to follow the Buddhist way will test Brown’s maternal mettle. Once again, it will take a remarkable feline to help her family put things in perspective and impart the kinds of life lessons one can’t always learn from a two-footed guru. Candid, genuine, and unaffected, Brown’s touching memoir celebrates the affirmational power of animal companions to help humans navigate life’s most challenging moments. --Carol Haggas

First, let me say that I was not aware of the author's first book, "Cleo" until I began reading this book. I don't remember how I discovered the availability of this title but it captured my attention and it was added to my 'wish to read' list. This is a beautiful memoir by Helen Brown to delight every aspect of a reader's senses from the beauty of the cover design by Colleen Andrews to the collage of color family photographs on the first page to the author's remembrances throughout the pages. The descriptions of experiences, thoughts and emotions are shared with honesty and without hesitation. As I am a daughter that wandered away from my home town on two occasions to follow my heart - once for professional exploration and once simply to follow my heart - I can truly understand some of the perplexing conversations through the years between mother and daughter. As dearest cat Jolie continued to live with Mother throughout the years of these same wanderings I have a deep appreciation for Jonah's nurturing of Helen Brown's family as well as his soulful reactions. This is a very special glimpse of the bonds shared by mothers and daughters, the friendship circle of women when courage, strength and hope are needed for sharing in higher volumes but softly without fanfare and the unconditional love between cats and their forever families.

This is a follow-up to Helen Brown's earlier book, "Cleo: the Cat Who Mended a Family". That one was a difficult read because of the tragedy of Sam's death, but after I finished it, I felt like I was good friends with everyone in the family. So I was pleased when I learned of this book, because I wanted to know what had happened next with Helen's family. I was not disappointed. I got to share in the next phase of the family's lives--Rob's marriage, and Lydia's quest for spiritual growth, and Helen's deepening understanding of her daughters. The author also showed her courage when faced with cancer. It was also interesting to 'see behind the scenes' of how a best selling book came to be written--and how it impacted the world.I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and hope a third one comes along soon.

I loved Cleo, but this book isn't about the cat -- it's all about the author. And this account is by one of the most self-absorbed people I've ever read. I, too, have had breast cancer, and I certainly know about the anxiety. But are these theatrics what it's been for the thousands of us who have just got on with things, and not made ourselves the middle of a drama?

I hadn't read the author's previous book, "Cleo". After subsequently reading "Cleo", I would suggest reading it before reading "Cats & Daughters". In any case, "Cats ....." is a great book that talks about family relationships and challenges as well as the important part that a cat played in dealing with these issues. The book is well-written and was an interesting read. The writing pulled me in and I felt like I had a front row seat to seeing the author's feelings and reactions. A good book.

This is supposed to be a sequel to CLEO. It is not. There is very little of the cat in here. It is mostly about the author's daughter. It was not nearly as engaging as the previous book. I will not be keeping this one.

As I am wont to do, I read the sequel, Cats and Daughters, loved it and am now reading the first book, Cleo. In any order, they both deliver a strong message. Embrace life you don't get another this go-round. I don't have a daughter. I do have a sister and I do have a cat. Neither the sister or the cat necessarily comes when called so I'm guessing daughters are the same way. Also cool is the fact the author hails from New Zealand. She is correct; people remain the same, past, present, future and on various parts of the globe.

Expected more from this book. I am a Siamese cat owner and absolutely love the breed and how they interact with us humans, The book centers more on the author and her family then secondly on the cat. Although she does incorporate the Siamese and I understand her plot ; it became boring and redundent.

People who have raised cats and kids will recognize a lot of the behaviors. For the most part, is a narrative of the ups and downs of normal life in sort of "as the world turns" style. The author seems to be a nice person and the book a "feel good" sort of experience.

As a 24 year old, I have long observed a general lack of maturity both in myself and in much of my generation. We may be able to get married, have children, and even purchase homes—but the vast majority of us lack traditionally “adult” qualities. This can be observed in the amount of money we spend on a monthly basis, the amount of time we spend playing video games and scrolling through social media, the avoidance of responsibility, the lack of work-ethic, the fear of long term commitment, the general softness and entitlement that characterizes us, the “self-centric” view of life we possess…etc. I could go on, but I will spare you.We, and I include myself in this pronoun, have a big problem. We are not growing up. And that means America has a problem.Senator Ben Sasse writes The Vanishing American Adult to address the problem and to give a few keys to break free from this forever young, “Peter Pan” syndrome. His tone throughout is not the “get off my lawn” old man rhetoric that you might expect, however. Rather, Sasse writes with a genuine concern of our children remaining children, and as such, remaining unable to carry the torch of freedom from previous generations. If it indeed true that “freedom is only one generation away from extinction”—we had better address the problem, and fast.Sasse’s solutions are not three easy, formulaic steps to “grow up.” There is no secret breakthrough that will magically unlock the prisons of perennial adolescence. His “solutions” (if they can be called that) are the oddly familiar, “old school American” wisdom that we need to more recapture than reinvent. He writes in chapter 4 of the importance of desegregating generations, of being close to people who are in different stages of life than us. This allows us to see not only generational weaknesses, but it also prompts us to consider of the brevity of life—and to seek answers to the big questions death and old age give us. He furthermore reminds us of the necessity of suffering as he says, “We seem collectively blind to the irony that the generation coming of age has begun life with far too few problems.” Quoting the poet Aeschylus, Sass writes, “he who learns must suffer…against our will comes wisdom through the awful grace of enduring pain.” Living insolated lives may make us more comfortable in the moment, but it will fail to teach us the invaluable lessons that only pain can produce. In Chapter 5, Sasse calls us to embrace work pain, a traditionally American quality. Englishman Francis Grund observed of Americans in the 1830s that “there is probably no people on earth with whom business constitutes pleasure, and industry amusement, in an equal degree with the inhabitants of the United States of America. Active occupation is not only the principal source of their happiness, and the foundation of their national greatness, but they are absolutely wretched without it.” If Grund was correct then, how far we have fallen? (I am often absolutely wretched with work!) Sasse calls us to revive the classical “Protestant work ethic” which, instead of taking pleasure in the leisure and the consumption—took the greatest pleasure in the production. In my favorite chapter, Sasse calls us to “build a bookshelf” and recapture a voracious love of reading books. He does a short track through the bombshell of the printing press halfway through the 15th century—and the “bloodless revolution” that ensued. America is, in essence, a result of the explosion of ideas that Guttenberg ignited, founded on protecting the free interaction of those same ideas. Printer Benjamin Franklin and the eventual President Thomas Jefferson embodied the obsession with the written word typical of colonial America; and it is exactly that passion for big ideas and dialogue which laid the groundwork for our eventual freedom. As these ideas united the people in a singular vision for America, Sasse calls us then to recover our heritage of reading; and not just reading for pleasure, but reading to wrestle with philosophies from giants of the past. He also lists his 60 book canon which I found quite enjoyable.Among other things, Ben Sasse writes of his experiences through travelling and other lessons learned from his past. This helps make this book even more of an enjoyable read and perfect for students who are graduating college or looking to start families. Above all this book calls us to embrace the precious “American Idea” devoted to hard work, the free exchange of ideas, and the inalienable human rights we possess.

Ben Sasse is not a typical politician, and he says explicitly that this is not a policy book. He is not telling you how he is going to take care of you. There is no plan to save the world. He describes the many, many ills of our education system with the knowledgeable perspective of the son and husband of teachers - and tells you he is home schooling his children. This book consists of his observations on how to raise successful children. He cites other authors who have given the issue some thought. These include Rousseau and John Dewey, with whom he often disagrees, and Diane Ravitch and John Gatto writing about public schools. He is an educated man who wants the best for his children.Sasse is a US Senator. He envisions that the problems he identifies must be resolved within the polity that is the United States. Hirschmann wrote in 1970 that there are three choices when one is confronted with a difficult problem: Exit, Voice, and Loyalty. Sasse addresses the second of them – he assumes the problems are fixable. Unlike most politicians, he sees that the people must be an active part of the solution. It cannot be imposed from above.Sociologists identify many markers associated with becoming an adult. Eight big ones are:1. Moving from parents’ home2. Leaving school for the final time3. Getting a full-time job4. Reaching economic self-sufficiency5. Loss of virginity6. Getting married7. Having children8. Establishing an independent householdThese passages provide structure to life. They used to happen systematically, and in a somewhat predictable order. For millennials (1980-95, per Sasse) and Gen Z this is no longer the case. As President of Midland University Sasse noted an unwillingness to engage in and to finish jobs, an unwillingness to think things through, and an unwillingness to grapple with things as an adult.Unless we can turn these trends around, there is nothing that can be done at a policy level to restore the country. Sasse's book is primarily addressed to parents: how to raise children to become real adults. His book (outline below) is divided into two parts: identifying the problem and suggesting things that individuals can do to address it within their own families.Introduction: My Kids “Need” Air ConditioningPart I Our Passivity Problem----One: Stranded in Neverland----Two: From Little Citizens to Baby Einsteins----Three: More School Isn’t EnoughPart II An Active Program----Four: Flee Age Segregation----Five: Embrace Work Pain----Six: Consume Less----Seven: Travel to See----Eight: Build a Bookshelf----Nine: Make America an Idea AgainPostscript: Why This Wasn’t a Policy BookSasse is uniquely well prepared to write on these themes. Son of a churchgoing high school wrestling coach, fourth generation in the small town of Fremont, Nebraska, he worked on farms as a kid. His drive and intellect powered him through five academic degrees, including Harvard and Yale, a career in consulting and (at age 37) a university presidency. He married a fellow Christian and has two teenage daughters and a kindergarten aged son. This is an outstanding book. My extensive reading notes appear as comments.

I had first heard about this book several years ago, but it was only in German. I don't read that. So I was thrilled when I saw that a new (the first?) English edition had been published. Unlike the German version, this one is also in color.Anyway, the book is awesome. It has quite a few games (some of which Knizia says he has turned into commercial products) and the rules are easy to follow. All you need is a deck or two of cards and/or some dice and the occasional chit or game piece.Looking forward to playing all of these. My kids really like decathlon, a dice game with lots of "events" and varied goals. Kept us occupied for the better part of an evening. Highly recommend this book!

All the images have been removed from the original publication. Without the images, you can't see what's being described. The images hold the key to following Babylon through to the Roman Catholic Church as well as through to the Muslim anti-Christ system. BRING BACK THE IMAGES!

"Cush was the father of Nimrod, who became a mighty warrior on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.” The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Uruk, Akkad and Kalneh, in Shinar. From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah, and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah—which is the great city." - Gen 10:8-12.The Bible refers to Nimrod only fleetingly but in "The Two Babylons, or The Papal Worship, Proved to be the Worship of Nimrod and His Wife" (Loizeaux Brothers, 1959) Alexander Hislop (1807-1865) sets out to prove that Nimrod and his wife, Semiramis, were the inspiration for the important pagan religions of antiquity. He argues that a slew of deities including Adonis, Apollo, Attes, Baal-zebub, Bacchus, Cupid, Dagon, Hercules, Januis, Linus, Mars, Merodach, Mithra, Moloch, Narcissus, Oannes, Odin, Orion, Osiris, Pluto, Saturn, Tammuz, Teitan, Typhon, Vulcan, Wodan, Zoroaster, along with Aphrodite, Artemis, Astarte, Aurora, Bellona, Ceres, Diana, Isis, Juno, Mylitta, Proserpine, Rhea, Venus, and Vesta can be traced to the Babylon mystery cult worship of Nimrod and Semiramis. Hislop then argues that many elements of pagan belief and practice were brought into the Christian church via opportunists, accommodators, compromisers, and pseudo-Christians (sounds like many of the leadership in today's Evangelicalism) and became the basis for much of Roman Catholicism."The Two Babylons" was first published in 1853 in pamphlet form, expanded in 1858, and first published as a hardcover in 1919. The publication has been surrounded by controversy since it was first introduced. Many criticize Hislop's extrapolations as reckless and overreaching. I'm certainly not an antiquities scholar but there appears to be more than a grain of truth to Hislop's arguments, which are supported by 400 footnotes along with 61 illustrations. Every decent Romanism library MUST include "The Two Babylons."Reading this book is definitely a challenge due to the 19th-century prose and plentiful small-font footnotes so it won't do for a relaxing afternoon at the beach. You'll definitley want to get your hands on an older Loizeaux Brothers edition (red and white dust cover) which contains the unaltered text and supporting material. Unfortunately, several of the recent self-published, print-on-demand editions have altered the text and don't include the brief introduction, sixty-one illustrations, copious footnotes, lengthy appendix, or index.

Was not able to see the artworks of the Babylonian gods and goddesses on the Kindle version. I thought it would be in the back of the book where the verses of Scripture were located. I was so disappointed that they were not in there.

This is one of the smartest exposes of the Babylonian Pagan Catholic Church ever. His language analysis alone is mind blowing. Chaldean is the mother tongue of so many of the Bibles key passages and is an older form of Hebrew and Hislop does a masterful job of breaking down the various forms of Nimrod/Semiramis/Tammuz worship that are still with us today but hidden. This book is essential for those looking to penetrate the mindset of the criminal elite(politicians, banksters, "royals", freemasons, Jesuits, Illuminati etc etc) who have controlled the world secretly from after the Flood as the decendents of Cain/Ham. Their way of thinking and religions are so foreign to the other 99.999% that most are flabbergasted as to how the world is so crazy. It's not crazy it's just that our rulers live in a completely different world than the vast majority do. This clears up a lot of the confusion as far as their REAL religion and not the ones they publicly profess for show. The occult is alive and well unfortunately.

The key to understanding Biblical truths is looking back at history. This book gives you the history of the Trinity and where it originated. It also gives you information of the present day rituals that people are participating in but have no clue what they mean.It will definitely open your eyes to truth, and the truth will set you free.

The book by alexander hislop is a classic, and is very controversial. This book describes how ancient Babylon and modern Babylon are mirror of each other. Martin Luther wrote a book called the babylonish captivity of the church. Same idea. These men have realized that the roman church is the same as the ancient babylonish pagan church, only Christianized. Most Christians nowdays would shun this book since it is divisive.

This book is one of the best i have seen to provide information on the beginnigs of paganism. This book is not easy reading. It takes some real thought. This book was written by a pastor who did a great research on the subject. Written in the late 1800s. This book is available in hard copy which i have.

Very good comparison between the two Babylons. The material was well researched and well documented. If you have an understanding of spiritual matters, you will get a lot out of this book. If you have very little knowledge of spiritual matters, it may be too much for you to digest.

Picabo: Nothing to Hide, by Picabo Street

From Publishers Weekly

In her autobiography, Olympic ski racer Street gives a solid chronology of her career with her independent "I'll do what I want" attitude. Not a typical sports superstar, Street prefers to hang out with her family or old friends. She's also not been a favorite model for magazine covers, since, due to her injuries, her weight has greatly fluctuated. However, it becomes evident that Street cares most about excelling at her sport and when she doesn't perform well, she blames herself and vows to improve for the next competition. Street attributes her atypical traits to her upbringing in Triumph, Idaho a small town near the Sun Valley and Ketchum ski resorts, where she grew up a tomboy and to her parents, who were "hippies" feeding the family from homegrown vegetables and providing the bare minimum. As an adolescent, Street's speed was apparent as she beat many more experienced male skiers. She loved speed but she also loved to please her father, who coached her. Street is charming and sometimes refreshingly honest: "Unfortunately, ski racing is no way to lose weight.... Skiing is also anaerobic. Getting your heart rate up for 90 seconds isn't enough to burn much fat. Then you sit around in the lodge, trying not to eat pastries and French fries. What can I say? I like to eat." Fans of Picabo will enjoy this book but, because she hasn't been in the public eye recently, her audience may be somewhat limited. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

At age 30, world downhill champion and Olympic gold and silver medalist Picabo Street has written the story of her childhood and her racing career. Born in a half-abandoned Idaho mining town to unconventional parents, Picabo thrived on reckless, thrill-seeking juvenile adventures. After she began skiing, her living-on-the-edge style fueled her drive to the top. But it also led to tempestuous relations with teammates and a sportswriter's dream as she spouted statements like "Only the wild ones win." This book explains the differences between the types of racing, such as Super G and giant slalom, and provides an armchair understanding of how steep and treacherous the runs are. This story, told with youthful freshness and informal language, is engaging and honest. Readers will be cheering for her to succeed at the 2002 Olympics. Recommended for all public libraries, especially where skiing is popular. Kathy Ruffle, Coll. of New Caledonia Lib., Prince George, BC Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Detailed and insightful account of Picabo Street's life and struggle against great difficulties, including her own weaknesses. Still one of the best books for gaining insights into world class skiing. One reviewer criticizes Picabo for being self-absorbed. Apparently he failed to notice that the book is an autobiography. He also overlooked Picabo's self-criticism and acknowledgment of problems she sometimes created for herself and for ski teams.

I love stories of unique people and how they got where they are and this one doesnt disappoint in the least. It takes this gutsy young woman from childhood through accidents and challenges and while you may not like her you'll respect her for her guts and tenacity. She may not be an honor winning girl scout but she gets my vote for teaching us how to succeed. Worth your time.

If you are ever in need of some motivation to make your dreams come true...if you ever doubt your abilities and wonder if "little ol you" can accomplish the impossible....Read Picabo's book.Picabo is a wonderful example of what one person can accomplish, when they put their mind to it!We'll definitely be cheering Picabo on in the 2002 Winter Olympics! GO Picabo and GO USA!

I'm sorry this book did nothing for me....A hero? An inspiration? I can not understand how people idolize her...a young man who lives down the street from me who served time in Iraq recently....he's a real hero and inspiration. Picabo Street is another one of those, cookie-cutter, self absorbed athletes who thinks the world revolves around them. Good luck to her...but she'll never have my respect.Steve
