We bought this book as a preparation for our second visit to this beautiful estate.On our recent vacation, we stopped at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello for a short visit (several hours). This was our second trip to this World Heritage site, the first one was when the kids were much smaller and while we certainly enjoyed the visit, we felt we’ll get out of it more this time.Before the visit I figured I’ll buy Monticello: The Official Guide to Thomas Jefferson’s World by Charley Miller & Peter Miller, we like visiting historic places and we know that many times context is everything. An artifact, a building, or even something that might seem insignificant get a whole new meaning when viewed in the right light.The book goes on to talk about the history of Thomas Jefferson, the home, the plantation, and the artifacts inside. Each section is very short (this is a guide, not a comprehensive history book) and includes many pictures and maps.One does not have to read each section to go on to the next, they are completely separate (and color coded). I assigned our kids to read the section about the house so they’ll have a better understanding of what we’re going to look at. While begrudging at first, they admitted that it was a good idea.My favorite parts of the book are the little stories from Monticello’s curators. I’m glad I bought this guide before our visit and I highly recommend it if you plan to go.

This official guidebook about Thomas Jefferson's home & plantation has plenty of color photos in classic National Geographic style. Valuable read both before & after a visit, even for school-age children. Since taking photos inside the house isn't allowed, this book offers pictures of everything you'll see on your visit. Published by National Geographic & the Thomas Jefferson Foundation that owns the house & plantation.

Very thorough; now I need to go back and look for all of the things I missed when I was there, but learned by reading this book. Excellent!

This is the perfect guide before a visit and a terrific souvenir afterwards, especially as you are not permitted to take photographs in the house (outdoors is O.K.). The photos in the book are superb and the historical background and details provided in the text is first rate. Highly recommended in anticipation of a visit to this national treasure of a house.

We had visited Monticello, then found the book on Amazon. The book provided information and pictures of some of the areas of the house that we did not get to see on the tour, and gave more detail about some subjects than the tour guide could explain.

This books is so well written that it brought devastation so close to my heart. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and I was disappointed, gleefully. To see this defiant warrior find her ground and believe and trust herself, her God and her parents is the definition of love. I could find nothing that I didn't believe or was without raw with emotion. Her egotism didn't even stop me from loving this book. I have 2 complaints:-there is no mention of her brothers in the acknowledgement. Sadly this has left me disappointed and the word infidel-i felt slapped in the face. I was rooting for her and this family and I still am. Nothing is without its flaws. Thank you Maria-Genghis Khan for sharing your world and journey. You have opened my eyes.

This is story about one fearless young woman and her very brave family. It really shows the difference between Taliban. beliefs and true islam, something we all need to remember and understand. Maria and her family were relentless in pursuing their dreams and ideals despite the odds being against them and I admired the bonds the entire family had and how much they supported each other. Excellent read.

I really found this story interesting. It really helps to expand my knowledge of the larger world and what people have to overcome. It is a story that needs telling. It is not literature but it is well written and doesn't jump around. Another similar book that tells a story of a female growing up in Afghanistan is a Thousand Splendid Suns. Since most of history was written by men I'm finding it refreshing today to read quality books written by woman about strong women.

As I read I felt like I was right with these women and girls as they fought with the social obstacles that surround them. I came to admire and respect Maria's parents in the way they helped Maria be what she wanted to be. They put their lives and the lives of their children in the crosshairs of death by allowing their children the freedom to find their way. It is an inspiration to learn of what people must live through in order to make a difference in the world by helping others.Bobby Jean

I may not have read this book if it hadn't been picked by my book club, I would have missed out on an eye-opening experience. Seeing the world through Maria's life I have learned so much about a culture and region that I knew so little. It is hard to believe what she has faced in life simply because of her love of sports and being outdoors. It puts things in perspective.

An insight into the difference between the freedom of girls and boys under the Taliban. The parents definitely want an education for all their children but realize that school is not the best place for this daughter to be. It would be interesting to find out why her mother was allowed to teach and set up schools given the strictures placed on women.

Maria book is well written and so very insightful and candid. I am able to identify with her family, especially her father. For Father's Day I gave 3 additional copies to my 3 oldest grand daughters ages 14 through 17. They were confussed to receive a Father's Day gift from me. I said, "In addition to your summer readings, you will read about Maria. When everyone is finished the 4 of us will have a special dinner to review her story. Ladies, that is your Father's Day gift to me." Love, Paw Paw

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and the writing. The story of Maria and especially her father were so heartfelt. I can't imagine the risks her mother and father took to educate the young girls of their tribal areas of Pakistan. The support she received not only from her father and mother but also her brother and sister which continues to this day. I highly recommend this book for book group discussions as well. Can't wait to discuss at our book group this week. Thank you Maria Toorpakai for a beautiful story.

A-Z, 0-9, dictionary style. Very true to the meaning of tattoo dictionary. Have many general classics in there: multiple meanings of roses, skulls, sails, animals, tribal, etc. Not too specific with word selections.

The auther of this book is obviously nor the most informed or inspired writer. But I guess if you need a coffee table book for the lobby this will do fine. It looks nice, just don't expect to be blinded by knowledge. One the the most insightful (sarcasm) topics found within this dusty tome is "the finger stache". Mind ****ing blown.

Nice book...recommend it for anyone that enjoys symbolism.

I bought this as a gift for a friend. It’s got lots of definitions but unfortunately none of the tattoos my friends has.

It is a good book to complement other self study publications by introducing the student to the vocabulary used in various, common and everyday interactions in German speaking countries. It would benefit most a student with some previous intermediate level exposure to German language studies. The total beginner would probably find it too difficult to handle, as there are no pronunciation clues and the grammatical reminders are minimal. I found it quite recommendable otherwise.

The workbook is definitely not for the beginner but if you accompany this book with other German language books or programs, etc, it's great for sentence structure and grammar rules. Practice truly does make perfect.

Learning a foreign language in one's 70's is not easy, I need all the help I can get and this does seem to deliver.

I just got this book. Like all Herr Swick's books this one is very well written. The examples are very timely and useful at learning more of the nuances in German language speaking. I got a better feel of daily conversation techniques. My only wish is that there will be a second edition with more conversational examples to review.

This workbook is very good. I know a lot of the words, but had trouble with conversations, at the beginning of the work I actually could put sentences together and in the right order. I am only part way through, but I have impressed myself as well as others!

German has to be one of the most challenging languages to learn for native English speakers that still uses largely the same alphabet. These Practice Makes Perfect workbooks (used with computer programs and audio practice) have helped me quite a bit.
