Don't get me wrong. The 3-star rating I am giving to this publication has nothing to do with the contents of the book: the text, instructions, and photographs are wonderfully representative of the talent of the two great artists who wrote it. The photos are beautiful, and instructions are clear and easy to follow. A must-have for artists who like to create out of the beaten path.The reason I am giving this publication only three stars is because of its very poor binding, that started falling apart right after the first reading. Also, this soft cover edition published in the US is the exact same book as its counterpart published in hard cover in the UK under the title "Mosaics, Inspirations and 34 Original Projects", with a different cover. There is no reference in the US edition to the original UK edition, which is regrettable, as many buyers looking for books on the subject might be trapped into buying the two publications, believing that they carry different contents. I was.Anyone looking for this book would be better advised to buy the UK edition, in hard cover--maybe more expensive, but much more durable. For more on the subject, please refer to my review of the UK edition of "Mosaics".

Kaffe Fasset always lends a wild, whimsical, almost overpoweringly colorful touch to whatever craft he turns his mighty skills to, and this book is no exception. I have recently purchased 3 other books on making mosaic designs (both how-to and inspiration), and this is by far the best.The content of the step-by-step instructions is adequate; it contains the necessary information on materials and how-to, and covers the territory at least as well as any I've seen. Where this book absolutely dazzles, though, is in its visual inspiration. Fasset and his co-author for this book, Candace Bahouth, will blow your senses with their incredibly colorful designs, as well as the examples of historic mosaicwork of note; you will come away from this book certain that you too can create brightly wild flights of fancy with a few broken bits of crockery and some cement adhesive. And in fact, maybe you can! I warn you, though, fantastic design and color sense doesn't necessarily fall into your lap as effortlessly at it seems. If not, it won't be due to any lack on the part of this book to spark your ideas!This is a book to come back to again and again; in fact, it's altogether too much to take in all at once! I find myself having to get up in the middle of the night to look at it yet again, as I lie awake picturing all the splendid things I could make...if only I could find such colorful bits of broken china and sparkling glass...

If you're tired of the sweet, pink rose mosaics, then this is the book for you!The mosaics in this book are done in a delicious tapestry of jewel tones, often highlighted by found objects. The dazzling images in this book will have you looking around your house with a new eye and your hammer.I purchased this because I have a killer knitting book by Kaffe and I wasn't disappointed! This is visual yumminess!

I love this book. It's the best and most fun mosaic book ever.

I found this book to be very interesting and even inspirational. Even though I haven't done any mosaic work, it made me what to try it. The book is very colorful, and the work is unique. The pieces are truly works of art.

This is the most beautiful and inspiring book on mosaic I've ever seen. I'm going to tackle my first big mosaic project soon--doing the back of the chimney of my fireplace. It is under a covered porch outside, and after seeing the beautiful photos in the book, I'm inspired to do something that will amaze anyone who sees it.

I bought this book for my daughter who wants to do some "broken plate" mosaic work. Out of four others that I own this one is the best to my way of thinking. It was recommended to me several years ago.

This is an excellent text, but I this age of electronic books the pix need to be higher resolution. Publisher is putting minimal effort in this effort. Here's an example of an untouched photo. For a reference book focused on imagery, it's really poor.

This book is chockablock full of really super information. As such it weighs at least ten pounds. I haven't owned a red book in years, at least 10 likely more mostly because I didn't get much out of it. I bought this because I read that a new section was to be included about So-Called Dollars which is true, but more on that later.The Red Book, as most of you already know, is the authoritative general reference used by coin collectors and dealers to get general, and some specific information about pretty much all of the coins issued by and for the people of the United States (and British colonies) and its territories. As we've matured as a nation and indeed as the research has grown more and more categories of numismatics have become sought after and eventually legitimized by inclusion in this book.The 2017 Mega Red book is the culmination of what we "know" about the state of United States coins and coin-like material. One of the excellent things about this expanded format is that it gives the editors the opportunity to become downright chatty in their discussions of coins which makes the articles pertaining to their respective subjects that much more lively, informative and entertaining. The book begins with a broad overview and then drills down by topic to include just about everything you'd want to know on a casual basis.The reproductions are done in color and this book is lavishly illustrated, even going so far as to include close-ups of many of the sought after or notable doubled-dies, die details and markers, and mint mark/lettering varieties. The book also includes quite detailed grading information for the various coin series and pricing information (estimates and some actual auction results).Modern bullion coins are given their own sections too.What brought me to the book, frankly, were the appendices, and specifically the section on so-called dollars. This was edited by Jeff Shevlin who is generally considered the world's leading expert on the topic. He has chosen a broad cross section of medals that are listed in the book "So-called Dollars" by Hibler and Kappen, comprising around 100 medals. Many of those included are rare, some virtually unobtainable, but others are readily obtainable for very little money. Given the limited space Mr. Shevlin was given, he did an excellent curatorial job. My only quibble would be that he did not include more of the 'monetary" issues, specifically the Bickford and Eutopia dollars.Having said that, if one drills down more deeply into the book, he will find that there are other sections of the MEGA Red Book that include so-called dollars that are listed in the Hibler & Kappen reference. To wit, the chapter (and legitimate chapter, not an appendix chapter) about "Private & Territorial Gold" contains about a half dozen numbers that are listed in "So-Called Dollars" as issued in "Hart's Coins of the West."Also, under the "Private Tokens" chapter there is a section on Lesher Referendum Dollars which are also listed in Hibler & Kappen.Finally, in Appendix I the editors has taken up the task of listing "Modern US Mint Gold & Silver Medals" which although containing a small number of entries at present does seem to promise an expanded presence in the years to come. This reviewer particularly welcomes such a development as one does get the impression that the US Mint has gone into overdrive in the production of nominally monetary, rather uninspiring, modern commemorative coins that will never find circulation and are produced in such large numbers that they will likely never become rare.Medals and so-called dollars, on the other hand, because they have only recently come into their own despite having been produced years, and in some cases more than a century, ago are surprisingly affordable and fun to collect despite, or because of, their oftentimes excruciating rarity.I do have one overarching criticism of this book and that is that the editors neglected to include an introductory discussion of what is new in the book. Doing so would have drawn collectors to this 'new' material thus reinforcing their decision to include it. This is inexplicable and sorely missed.Nefvertheless the chatty, informative style in which the book reads, and the truly enormous and enormously valuable information it includes makes this a very, very, good inclusion to one's library.

A scholarly, well-crafted, and accessible text that provides a plethora of facts, figures, and engaging stories about our country's numismatic history, along with most of the contemporary knowledge necessary to become an advanced collector. I say 'most', because, as other reviewers have noted, some coins receive less attention than others. If you specialize in a particular series, e.g., 20th century dollar coins, you might consider a text that focuses exclusively on such coinage.But if you're looking for a comprehensive text that will provide the essentials on all U.S. coins, with encyclopedic coverage of the most popular series, e.g., Lincoln wheat cents, I highly recommend spending a little more money for this text versus the standard edition.Nothing against the venerable Red Book, but the Mega Red provides five times as much information for less than three times the price. It's like getting a 1916-D Mercury dime in AU-50 for the VF-30 price. ;O)

I have been collecting U.S. coins for over 40 years. With over 1500 pages, this is by far the best "all in one" book I have ever owned and I own many different coin reference books. A wealth of information for the beginning collector to the most advanced collector. A "must" have.

BIG book with lot of info - but depending on the particular series - also lacks a lot of info. The immediate standout is the IKE dollars. NO Images showing the differences in the various TYPES that are well documented and designated by all the grading companies. This is especially important due to the high premiums for certain versions.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!! It has large print and I can easily look at the photographs of the coins and compare them with my coins without a magnifying glass. EVERY coin is pictured and identified. It goes into detail when necessary and explains everything. This will help me identify and keep any rare coins instead of using them in stores. Thank you SO very much.

Very informative.

Clear and effective.

As a teacher, I appreciate the "common sense" approach that Dr. Giler advocates in her book. I only wish this user friendly book was available when I first began teaching. Dr. Giler addresses the types of teasing which these children must endure. She also discusses the meaning of tone and its significance in others' feeling so that these youngsters can best assimilate into the culture of youth. The book "Peony in Love" was a great spiritual adventure in the Japanese culture.It centers around the opera "The Peony Pavilion." This opera has a haunting effect on young girls, who long for true love in their arranged marriages. The main female named "Peony" loves this opera and has 2 copies of it. This opera tells of a young woman who longs for a true love for her mate, but doesn't receive the husband of her desire.She becomes a "ghost wife" in the afterlife. This story sadly come true for Peony Herself. I was amazed at the multi-faceted afterlife of the Japanese. I also believe in ancestor veneration, but to the Japanese it is a matter of a happy afterlife or one of complete loneliness and despair.A great journey into the spiritual afterlife and the quest to find true love, here on earth and the hereafter.

It has been said that love can move you and change how you perceive your life. In China, in the 1600 and 1700s, falling in love was an oddity. No woman was to fall in love. Marriages were arranged. They were not to see each other until the marriage. However, Peony, was different. She was a loving individual. A person who enjoyed an opera so much that it became part of who she was.This book takes you on an adventure where you will soar with happiness and cry with despair. It has everything in it. Teaches us how it was to live in China all those years ago. You may get to a point where you want to stop reading the book. Put it down and give yourself a few days and then pick it right back up again. You will be SO glad you did!Another wonderful historical fiction, Lisa! Thank you for sharing your wonders with us. For that I am truly grateful.When I think of peony, I think of a flower that needs help opening. Notice how the ants work to open the petals. Next time, take a moment to see how beautiful life truly is.

If you are looking for an outstanding literary work, move on. If you are fascinated with Chinese history and can tolerate a very intimate look at the culture, mythology and lives of women in 15th century China, this is a good place to start. If I were a book editor I would suggest cutting much that is repetitious. But I am not. I am a delighted reader who now has a much better perspective on women in China and the forces that rule their lives even today. A bit of irony that the book talks about the unheard voices of the Chinese women writers, but most of the reference materials were written by people with western names. The only critical element missing is the description of what people who are starving to death really experience.

I am amazed by the versatility of Lisa See. It seems like all she has to do is touch pen to paper and she begins to unravel a magnificent story.(Obviously she spends a lot of time doing research to be able to write with such clarity and understanding of her characters and the places they inhabit.)It doesn't matter if she is writing the story of her own family in On Gold Mountain, or the three books, that make up The Red Princess Trilogy, Flower Net, The Interior and Dragon Bones, or the historical novels, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Peony in Love or finally Shanghai Girls and Dreams of Joy, you are taken into the lives of the characters and feel as though you are in the places they inhabit. She develops a sense of place and time as deeply as she develops her characters.I read all of these books over a two month period.I was felt as though I was living in China in several incarnations.Lisa's writing enveloped me in every story. I was sorry when I finished the last book. I still feel like I left a familiar world and came back to the unsure world of reality.Then I saw she has a new book to be released in June!I can't wait.

It all feels very real and I felt myself transported back in time and related to Peony who is lovesick and now resists her arranged marriage by refusing food.All of a sudden something horrific and unexpected happens that I was totally unprepared for. At that point I almost put the book down and didn't want to read any more.However, I did pick it up again and continued reading what became, in effect, a ghost story. Soon I was caught up in the drama of it all and learned more than I ever wanted to know about ancient Chinese beliefs about ancestors, ghosts and the world of the dead. Some of this was hard to take for my western mind.By the end of the book I had learned about a belief system I never knew existed, felt an appreciation for the author who tried to incorporate it into this novel and do acknowledge her scrupulous research and attention to detail. Yes, I did love the book but because I didn't quite "get" it all, I have to stop just short of giving it my highest recommendation.

Had long looked for more info on Reynald of Chatillon, It really fleshed out him out, particularly as I had never realized what a integral part of the crusader effort he had been. Main thing that I had always been curious about was his construction of the modular boats that he used in an attempt to further his depredations of his enemies. Loads of real info on a actual person who had to be one of the most prolific warriors in a career that spanned several decades. He was really something to still be waging war at his advanced age by the time of his demise at the Hours of Hattin. The "Kingdom of Heaven" did him little justice as I learned him to be a tenacious and savvy competitor.

Not sure quite yet what to make of the book, to be honest. It’s well written and I enjoyed the read - particularly as it presents a very different view than is usually presented of that period and warfare. That being said, it’s obvious the author is a supporter of his primary character and often highlights his positives, minimizes his negatives. I suppose everyone does this, just something to be aware of as you read the book.

This book reads like another contorted version of history; the Crusaders are all depicted as a bunch of bloodthirsty, glory-seeking warlords. The author even goes so far as to compare the Christian Crusaders to the medival equivalent of modern child soldiers of Africa. The book is dry and has one note; Crusaders: bad guys, Muslim Jihadi: good guys.. I recommend God's Battalion's by Rodney Stark instead

Parts of it read like a blood and guts adventure story, but at the same time it is an original, well-researched and argued work of scholarship.The story begins in 2010 when Al-Qaida addressed a bomb to a long-dead crusader knight, Reynald de Chatillon. Long derided by Western and Muslim historians alike, God's Wolf tells the remarkable tale of Reynald's life, and you learn why he is still hated by Islamist fanatics 800 years after his death.Reynald turns out to have been a key figure in the crusading period. A violent, ruthless and effective soldier, he was notorious for his excesses against friend and foe alike. He is still the only Christian to lead an attack towards Islam's holy places in Arabia, a campaign which has led to him being vilified by Muslims ever since.From an obscure background, Reynald rose to marry princesses, make kings and lead crusader forces in their greatest victory against the might Muslim leader Saladin. Well-doicumented with original sources, God's Wolf puts Reynald at the centre of the crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem in the 12th century. Indeed the book explains the whole history of the period from a fresh angle and in an exciting and accessible way. It leaves you wanting more from this author.

I am so happy to have purchased this program. Everyday I practice speaking, reading and writing in pinyin. I have almost completely memorized the pinyin alphabet. I would suggest to anyone trying to learn Mandarin to purchase a supplemental book, McGraw-Hill's "Chinese Pronunciation" book. This book with accompanying CD will cover completely ALL the actual Mandarin pronunciations: finals (vowels) and initials (consonants). So, The "Chinese in 10 Mins. a Day" together with "Chinese Pronunciation" books, will give any serious beginner the perfect tools to start your journey in learning this new language. I gave "Chinese in 10 Mins. a Day" with CD a five-star rating because it is broken down into easy-to-comprehend blocks of words per chapter. This book provides so many necessary sentences that one needs to know in order to speak basic Mandarin.

Cool book, I wish it was really separated what is that to do for 10 min today, tomorrow and so on.. I just have to choose where to stop, so I dont actually spend only 10 min, and skip many days... I was looking for something that is kind of separated what is that to do every day. if it a matter of myself separating what to do, then, ANY book can be 10 min a day.

Fantastic IF you already have some knowledge of the Chinese language. I don't think the tones of the language can adequately be learned from any book, but if you have a solid grasp of the pronunciation of the tones, this book offers great basic vocabulary practice. The downloadable material is also excellent for practicing vocabulary, but it won't replace proper instruction in understanding the tones of the language--which are of utmost importance when learning Chinese!

This is a delightful easy to understand book filled with helpful pictures. My daughter is adopted from China and I bought this book when my teenage son & daughter went to visit China a few years ago. My daughter now finds this book helpful once again for her Chinese language college class.

If you are a beginner than books and DVD's made for children are really the best route. You have to start at the beginning.

Of course, no one learns Mandarin in 10 minutes a day. I'm sure no one really expects to. Used in conjunction with other methods that emphasize the sound of the language, however, this is a very good resource for basic phrases and vocabulary.

Was recommended by my son's Mandarin instructor. My 1st grade boy loves to work on the CD-rom items but the book itself is over his head. I was disappointed that the stickers that accompanied the book were not Mandarin symbols/figures by pinyin.

As a teacher of Mandarin, a subject for which there are few good textbooks, I employ this as a supplementary text for my students when parents ask "are there any other books out their my child could be using for extra help?"

Okay, let me start out by saying that contrary to some teasing, I am not planning to change gender. However, I am a single mom to two teenage boys and let's face it, in the past, some of these skills would have been taught to them by their father or even grandfathers. Sadly, the boys' grandfather lives in Virginia and doesn't get that opportunity. Their father is great at helping them out with some of these, but it sure never hurts for a mom to know, as a back up! Besides, I still can't grill a steak or do some of these other things. As times changes, this is a book not just for boys, but for mom's of boys, and for single ladies who are having to handle more and more of these things on their own. Kudos to the author for giving us a great guide!

Have glanced through this book and it is filled with christian instructions and references. For instance the "How to Network" section has a half page on how to say hello, ask questions to determine interests, and then to connect your friends with each other, and then another half page on why the guy who is good at it cares about networking so he can introduce people to "the most important man in the world - Jesus Christ." Um....I did NOT want to order a religious book. Same thing with lots of references to having strong faith, etc. Also very focused on heterosexual relationships "men and women were CREATED to be the perfect pair" etc. I'm sure there are more, but I found those two in just a few seconds of flipping through. I expected a more traditional/stereotypical tongue-in-cheeck "manly" guide so I dont' mind the gender stereotypes, but the religious references need to be part of the branding. "A Christian's guy's Manual to Manhood" would be more accurate. As for the actual advice it is pretty good but also pretty basic. How to wear cologne. Step 1. Buy cologne. Step 2. Open Cologne. Step 3. Spray cologne (3 pumps max) Step 4. Close cologne.

I bought this for my 13 year old son for Christmas. He loves it!! I am a single parent and my son's father is not in the picture. This book is great for my son to be able to read about things he is always asking me about. Some of the things in the book he won't need to learn about until he is older, but that is great because I feel like the book will grow with him. This is a great book for single moms and their sons.

i bought this book for my younger brother kind of as a welcome to manhood gift. i read through it before i gave ti to him and it actually has quite a bit of good knowledge inside. its not really written in a way that someone would read the entire book and i doubt if he gets a flat tire he will find his manhood book to learn how to change it but still it is a fitting gift and im happy with the purchase .

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my teenager (or maybe for his 16th birthday the month after, I'm undecided at the moment). It arrived today in perfect condition, not a crease in the cover or pages. I flipped through it a bit, and I'm pretty satisfied with the straightforward content. I think he'll like it, too. Win, win.

This book was perfect for my 15-year-old nephew. Great advice, and how-to's and lessons. Upon opening it, he was a bit sheepishly embarrassed about it, but later I saw him looking through it, and he said he could tell he was going to enjoy it. My adult brother also said he wanted to look at it, so maybe it is a good book for men of all ages! Fun and informative read!

I love that the author is a christian author. I bought this for my brother for his 18th birthday and he thinks it is an even mixture of humor, seriousness, and advice that is actually helpful. The contents seemed to fit his personality and so far, he's enjoyed reading it.

Gift for grandson at graduation. Looked like it contained quite a few tips that might seem to be common knowledge but are not always taught to young men these days. As he heads off to college and living on his own for the first time I hope it will give him a few pointers so he won't have to rely on "advice" from some of his peers who know even less than he does. One can hope.

This a great book to give to teens and even 20 somethings at home still. It is a little like a scout handbook. It has a series of tasks and basic skills men should know. They are simple and seem a little silly or no-brainers but it is amazing how much confidence and self-esteem can be raised having completed the book. As someone who is a long way from even 20 somethings, it is satisfying reading through the book and saying Yup know that one. Things like how to tie a necktie, change a flat tire, are a couple of them to give you an idea.
