Continuing my own literary pilgrimage, once again, I find myself exploring the Way of Saint James, but not along the traditional route from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (SJPDP) where most peregrinos begin their 500-mile walk to Santiago de Compostela, but from Paris, the city where author David Downie calls home. From the City of Light, it's 750 miles to Roncesvalles, Spain; the first leg through Burgundy, followed by the second from Le Puy-en-Velay to SJPDP to Roncesvalles--the legendary village immortalized by the "Song of Roland" in northern Spain.Throughout his pilgrimage, Downie channels Janus himself, the god of beginnings and transitions typically depicted as a man of two faces simultaneously looking backward as well as forward; as he regales the reader with remarkable insight into the past--resurrecting influential figures and events as he describes his present surroundings. I can't tell you how much I learned about the many places that Downie visited: the history, the locals' ancestry and the vestiges of fallen empires.As I mentioned above, I learned much about the history of France and the places Downie visited, but I found myself craving more personal reflection throughout. Finally at the end, especially in the epilogue, I was rewarded when Downie shares how his pilgrimage opened his eyes a little wider than before.Having read a number of books about the traditional Camino de Santiago pilgrimages, all of which began in SJPDP and ended in Santiago de Compostela, this book is unique in that it traverses France via ancient Roman roads and trails blazed by leaders of long-gone civilizations, as opposed to the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain where on average, 200,000 pilgrims trek 500 miles from SJPDP to Santiago de Compostela every year!If you're a pilgrim, past, present or future; or perhaps a descendant of Janus, you too will really enjoy this nontraditional fascinating pilgrimage of discovery to the past and present and future!

This is one of the better of several pilgrimage diaries I've read, especially of the secular narrative variety. Be advised that although Downie visits a lot of churches, he is more likely to wax on about Mitterrand or Caesar than he is about medieval or contemporary faith. Skeptics like the author are often worldly and perspicacious, and Downie's vast knowledge of the history and culture of France makes this as illuminating as it is entertaining. He is humble enough to be respectful, however, and though Downie doesn't relate any substantial spiritual awakenings or insights from his trip, it is nonetheless very good and readable travel writing, especially for inveterate francophiles like myself. (Personal note: I spent a month on pilgrimage in France last year visiting some of the same locations)

Whew—What a long slogI’m not sure which was a harder slog, Downie’s walk or getting through his book. Those readers expecting something to happen, a revelation, lively dialogue, or anything resembling a spiritual pilgrimage should look elsewhere.The title of the book, “Paris to the Pyrenees,” is deceiving and anyone hoping for an actual journey and description of a such a walk will be disappointed. Downie spends 296 pages describing a walk in Burgundy, from Vézelay to Mâcon. Nor will readers find much about walking the Le Puy route, since the book only has 12 pages on the actual portion of the route to the Pyrenees.Does Downie know something about France? Absolutely, so I will give him an extra star. Somewhere there is an appropriate forum for him to share his knowledge, such as an Elderhostel tour. In the book, however, he comes across as an insufferable, pedantic bore, and the tired reader suspects that even his wife gets exhausted from his “thoughts.” Downie is a downer.The book could have been improved with an accurate title and a sharper editor. Downie sprinkles his writings with “not to mention”—if so, why mention it? Better yet, why write it?—and he mentions several times that he graduated from UC Berkeley. That’s nice; his mother must be proud. I recommend that Downie use his time to write for the “California” alumni magazine rather than subject readers to his pompous prose.The photographs succeed in conveying a sense of bleak, empty landscapes. It would have been interesting to see a few residents or even the author, but, alas, all the reader gets are various walls, trees, a knotted church bell cord, and the author, photographed at about 60 feet away and looking down. I have a niece that takes more interesting photos of cats.Downie writes that no activity is “pointless.” Perhaps, yet this reader is waiting for him to explain the point of the journey. Fresh air? Exercise? A chance to eat a lot of food without worrying about calories? A reflection on history and humanity? He never offers a clue about what the journey meant to him. Possibly, the trip was just a chance to write a book that smart readers will avoid.

The book is well written, one might say it reads itself. Moreover, after several months since I read the book, I can safely say it changed my mindset. I have changed the view of my peers, my superiors and myself. I have changed my approach to several aspects of my life (study, work, sports,...). I really love the fact, that author took care with providing lots of references to his claims.I would further recommend the second book by Mathew Syed Black box thinking. The overlap is very subtle, which is rare in the self-development literature (it's often pointless to read several books by the same author).In summary, it's fun and full of useful information.

It's hard to resist comparing this book to Malcolm Gladwell's The Outliers. In The Outliers Gladwell helped spread the fame of the work of Anders Ericsson, FSU expert on how people acquire expert intelligence. Indeed, the phrase "10,000 hours" is now so ubiquitous it has become a cliche, although people often forget that it refers not just to practice but to STRUCTURED practice.While The Outliers excels in its writing and infotainment value, Bounce seems more instructive. It's hard to finish Bounce and not feel like there is a lot more you could do if you just applied yourself. Syed mixes personal experience, anecdotes of others, and empirical data to hammer home the point that living with a "growth" mindset is richly rewarding.Syed does an excellent job of explaining how some people continue to reach new thresholds in their pursuits while many others plateau early. I often give this book as a gift to nieces, nephews, and friends' children who are entering college, telling them I wish I could have read (and believed) this book when I was their age.

I read a lot, a lot, and this is one of the most significant books I have read. Anyone striving for high performance, in any field, as well as anyone raising or teaching children should read this book. There are many psychological points, which anyone can develop, which lead to someone bouncing back from difficulty and doing well. With practise being so important to superior performance, you must have persistance or you won't get in the practice.Highly recommended. I've already given it as a gift and will be giving out more.

The talent myth pervades our thinking in various forms, e.g., musicians, leaders, etc. are "born--not made." While one should acknowledge the existence of those rare individuals will seemingly superhuman aptitudes, according to the author, most "experts" in whatever field reach the pinnacle through a combination of factors--factors within the reach of mere mortals! This is good news and awfully encouraging to anyone willing to obtain the proper tutelage and engage in "purposeful practice" over the long haul. This book lit a fire under me to develop a plan and "do the time" in purposeful practice in order to master the guitar. Woodshed, here I come!

Shares many of the same themes and material that Geoff Colvin presented in Talent is Overrated. I believe the author writes from a personal perspective having competed at table tennis. I loved how he drew parallels with other sports. In the end, the basic tenants of focused practice, supporting family members, access to great coaching, internal desire to succeed, willingness to commit to excellence...etc. are hard to trump in any endeavor of life.

You won't be disappointed. I really love this style of painting and found the book inspirational. Unfortunately, Ms. Engle's technique requires a lot of removing paint by erasing, scraping, sanding or whatever, but she doesn't describe these steps in enough detail to follow her process. A video would be more helpful than this book, and I discovered she has several but they are pricey. The first part of the book where she explores the philosophy of creating art helped to focus my mission statement (for lack of a better word). The wash techniques are exciting and produce wonderful, somewhat uncontrolled results. They also use a lot of paint and water and require paper that can handle it. And experimentation.Also, despite the title, the "painting itself" part is only the first step. Once the initial washes are on, the author spends considerable time removing paint and adding details. Chances are, to get similar results, similar effort and extensive experience must also be applied.I'd recommend this book for the concepts presented, but with the caveat that it isn't exactly the detailed instruction in the technique that I'd hoped for.

Another of my favorite award-winning wc artists. Ever since I saw her work published in a leading wc art magazine many years ago. She presents an unusual starting technique, including colors applied from squirt bottles -- where you wonder whether anything beautiful can come from such chaos, but it does. Her landscapes are readily recognizable but still have a dreamy quality about them, difficult for the artist to effectively pull off, but she does. The different techniques she uses to preserve white spaces is alone worth the price of the book -- together with other unconventional "tools" such as the use of sand and gravel, pine needles and grass, powdered pigments, soap bubbles, heat gun, and similar. As far as some review comments that it is not detailed enough re: steps used to get from start to finish. I have found that virtually any art book on a gallery quality painting comes up short there -- and only attending a workshop or somehow watching an artist from start to finish can supply that insight. But Nita's book gives enough clues to an artist with some experience to allow the trying of several of her techniques successfully. No one, including her, gets it right always -- see her revealing comment on pg 110 "Redesigning a Finished Painting" -- even the masters many times painted their final masterpieces over a previous failed painting. Note too her comments on correcting a composition failing in her painting Island Lake II, pg 105: " ... made a very detailed tracing of the design... After erasing the chalk, I removed some of the paint from the necessary areas with a toothbrush, razor blade, and sandpaper, then washed in the new colors and repainted some darks while the wash was still wet." Corrections, another useful technique Nita discusses. So, for me this book at least is a highly recommended text for the wc artist, no matter what style one paints, and no matter the experience level, provided one can deal with some frustration to gain mastery of a new technique.

Every single word on every page of this book is valuable to the thoughtful watercolorist... SO many techniques, so carefully explained.The "doing" of watercolor often defies words, but where they are "captureable", Nita Engle has captured them and shared them as a treasure-trove of ideas and options for ANY watercolorist.Sadly, the title doesn't do this work justice- even the subtitle would have been more striking- but push past that and read this book. It will change how you think about and create your art.

I've actually bought this book before but I pass it around. one of the best reference book for anyone who is interested in pushing the boundaries of what watercolor can do. I teach and the instruction in this book is invaluable.

Love her paintings. It is a completely new way to approach watercolor and somehow it is not that easy, at least for me. I would like it better if some the paintings showing in the book, would it have more detail in color mixture, what techniques where use in specific part of the paintings. Overall, she does a great deal explaining how to work out the different techniques, the material to use and the palette she uses.The book is worthy to have it, for those who like to experience new things.

This is an excellent watercolor instructional book by Nita. She explains her approach to watercolor painting in a dynamic and loose manner. Her illustrations and explanations are encouraging. I wish she had a video instruction and demonstration series I could purchase. Very talented!

Though interesting reading the concepts presented here are for much more advanced painters. The book is worth it just to see the creations the artist presents as examples.

I would have liked to see more about how to model a small/medium/large intermodal yard. The information is in the books, but one needs to read and understand the industry in order to get an idea on how to model it.

For those who don’t know Mike Reilly personally, you’ll find the beginning of his book quite interesting and informative. Mike gives you a peek into his personal background, his family and how he became involved in this amazing sport. But, for me, I love, love, loved the stories of the athletes. Be sure to have your Kleenex ready! Mike truly remembers and relates the struggles and emotions that so many of these athletes dealt with to reach their personal goals. Knowing these are only a few of his many, many memories, makes me look forward to his next book!

After reading "Finding My Voice, Tales from Ironman", I couldn't help but envy Mike Reilly's good fortune in being able to follow his passion and become such an iconic figure in the world of Ironman. The individuals and stories he describes and tells are both varied and riveting. Here, we are treated to a backdrop of Ironman tales never before told.The man behind the most important exclamation in all of triathlon, "YOU ARE AN IRONMAN" is clearly, so much more that just a voice, he is the spirit and heart of Ironman. Triathlete or not, you can't be helped from being moved when reading his tales. Wonderful read.

Amazing book and an enjoyable read! Finding My Voice is the perfect title. I really liked Mike's personal connection to the Ironman individuals in his book. The Ironman stories were descriptive, inspiring and emotionally touching. In reading his book, having heard him speak, I sensed his voice inflections, as if he were talking to me - including the grins and laughter. Yup, it seemed like his voice.

What an absolutely amazing book. In addition to being the GREATEST RACE ANNOUNCER, mike is a fantastic story teller. The stories are relevant, heartfelt and beyond uplifting. I can not imagine someone who reads the book not finding at least one story that hits home. I was lucky enough to find 2. This book is not narrowly for the fringe athlete enthusiast that enjoys the multisport lifestyle- rather it is for anyone who understands and appreciates the determination and resiliency of people and the power of determination. Great book Mike!!! Can't wait for the sequel!

Reilly did a great job of writing this book for everyone - from Ironman finishers to those who may not even know what an Ironman is. Without being preachy, Reilly delivered subtle life messages by focusing on the incredible achievements of certain Ironman finishers. This story will have the reader laughing, crying, and smiling - a super dynamic collection of stories and memories. Reilly writes with a colloquial voice, which makes you feel as if he's sitting in the room with you, telling you the story in-person. A feel-good book all around.

This highly entertaining book made me laugh, cry, marvel in awe, and believe that, yes, anything is possible. Even if you're not a hardcore triathlete, you'll appreciate Mike's storytelling and inspiring tales. His collection of anecdotes proves that there is no obstacle or excuse that is insurmountable if the sheer will and daring is there. You'll "meet" some everyday people who do extraordinary things, and maybe even start questioning your own limits, in sport and beyond. Loved this book!

Just when you think you know someone, I’ve known Mike for over 50 years, you think they can’t surprise you. But the depth of sensitivity and emotion Mike relayed to me in his book was a real eye opener. His moving portrayal of the people in and around Ironman will move you, too.

You don't need triathlon/IronMan experience to appreciate the impact of the stories. They are truly moving and inspirational. Great read and can't recommend it enough!
