The so-called "Homeric Hymns" were songs of praise to ancient Greek deities. They were intended to be used as part of specific rituals of worship. They were not written by Homer, but by people who obviously admired Homer and wanted to honor him by emulating his style. Most of them are brief and follow a definite formula, but some of the longer ones have strong narrative lines that are quite engrossing. The Hymn to Hermes is our prime source for the story of the infant Hermes stealing the cattle of Apollo. (I found this hymn in particular to be delightful.) The Hymn to Demeter is probably the most valuable to people interested in the ancient Greek culture and religion. It tells a detailed story that gives tantalizing hints about the Eleusian rituals. I had never heard of the Homeric Hymns despite a lifelong interest in myth and ancient history. They really should be better known. This particular translation is extremely clear and unambiguous in addition to being, in some cases, extraordinarily beautiful poetry. I was very impressed with the way translator Sarah Ruden was able to switch voices for the different hymns. She takes a saucily flirtatious tone with the Hymn to Aphrodite that I found especially pleasing.My only quibble, however minor it may seem to some people, is that the glossary and notes are not very helpful at all. For example, there will be a footnote for Hera, who is probably familiar to anyone studying mythology. But then when some really obscure name occurs, there is no footnote. A glossary lists most of the names of characters, but ignores place names. The word you need to know the meaning of may turn out to be a place instead of a person. One of the frequently used devices is a listing of all the famous shrines to the deity being addressed. Good luck figuring out what's being talked about. I hope there will be a new edition that would have an improved glossary and perhaps a map denoting the many places mentioned. But this is more than made up for by the really excellent introduction by Sheila Murnaghan. Highly recommended.

Required reading for Greek and Roman Mythology, but I'm happy about it. It seems to be an excellent and enjoyable translation, with good notes to clarify meanings and identities. If you're into Greek Mythology, the hymns here definitely add a bit of depth to the experience. The stories aren't new, but they're told with a different flow to them, and so are just as fun to read again as they were the first time.

This was a very readable translation, and it proved to me to be an excellent resource for the study of mythology. This helps to provide background for many works that came later including Ovid's Metamorphoses and many plays, and helps to establish a baseline to demonstrate the change in the style in mythology that occurred over time.

I needed this book for a class I am taking. Another online book company wanted way, way WAY, more for it. It is what I needed for a GREAT price.

To the importance of writers and readers knowing their pastime's heritage, and feeling less ravaged both by time's erosion and man's destructive habits, it is a pleasure to the aesthetic intellect that some important narratives from the ancient world are extant (survived) fairly complete, or atleast so that we can fill in the gaps. One rougher, but patience-eliciting book you may want to have in your collection came out surprisingly enough not too long ago of previously undiscovered works of the playwright who held the most esteem and civil positions as well at Athen's height of glory, though he impressed the divinity-inclined public with works that included man's issues as equally important to that of the gods: namely, Sophocles; the book contains some eighty fragments of plays mentioned in related records, but thought not to have been extant, and is entitled The Lost Sophocles. I'm sure Amazon can get you a copy. It feels good to get more of the overall picture of the classical eras, doesn't it? Homeric Hymns fills my need I first garnered after reading his Iliad Odyssey. Also, ironically enough, a couple years back, as the result of an artifact thief originally, Poetry Magazine from Chicago's Poetry Foundation was able to print the missing parts of Anaeus's run from the enflamed streets of Troy, his offspring in his arms, and the elaboration of the death of his wife and her appearance to him to give a more complete prelude to the prophetic theme Virgil intended about the coming of Rome, and that empire's original wish to have no higherarchies and simply be the common man's eternal keeper of world peace. Yet, though the book of Homeric Hymns is still slim, and easily enough read in translation for today's youth and their growing interest in these kinds of literature, and yet leaves the body of work that we ascribe to having been written by whoever Homer was, it is completely satisfying, as well as being what Homer obviously intended it to be: a short, understandably focused approach to the combination culture of religion, rule and intent, and art -- namely the first somewhat near cursive, definitely written language and the further launching of that early literature, telling history as the Greeks saw it, poetry, for choralizing, singing, speaking, teaching, etc. Communication, the essential music to our relating and surviving. Play a game with yourself when reading these, and that is to look for contrasts in irony; that was an integral element in the origins of literature... -- Tom Lee...

Just a fascinating look at the origins of some of our best known and and not so well known myths. This was religion back then folks! Though the greek myths are now regarded as just myth, its funny to realize that other myths, such as those of the middle east (Jewish, Christian, and Muslim), are still being practiced as religion.

This was purchased for a class. I would not have read it otherwise

This is only the second review I've ever written. The first was five stars. I read hundreds of books a year. This Black Friday I wanted something light to read. Unfortunately I chose this book...I never made it past five percent on my Kindle......if I wanted a political diatribe or lecture I would have purchased a book from that genre. Never even made it to the story....I was so disgusted!!!! I will NEVER purchase another book from this so called author.

I wish I was more astute in breaking down the problems in this book. Basic story line was good, but...I wanted to like the characters, but even the "nice" main characters had issues with not letting things go. Everything that is not in mutual agreement is bickered about. Some arguments are not worth the aggravation.So much bickering. The circle of friends have to walk on eggshells because of the petty arguments over differences of opinion. They need to learn to "choose your battles", "let it go", or "agree to disagree". Very aggravating. They don't know when to keep mouth shut to keep the peace. I would not be in a relationship romantic or platonic that brings forth constant bickering.Town folk relate how wonderful this small tourist town is, yet many of the characters are snooty, obnoxious, self centered, mean spirited, plus there's been 3 recent murders.And finally, Gemma is running a chocolate shop, but yet she closes on the weekends (heeelllo? Tourists are your bread & butter). She also hires help within 3 weeks. She gives away a lot of product. She takes off at the drop of a hat to try to solve a murder and has let her help have bereavement leave, so the store is only open sometimes during the week.Finished the book, because I wanted to learn who the murderer was and why, which was interesting. Will not be reading this author again.

I got 30% through and didn't finish. It irks me to no end when I get invested in a story and characters only to be hit in the face with crap. This should not be listed as a mystery if part way through mystical creatures appear to speak to main characters!

I didn't finish this novel, stopping after two chapters in terrible disappointment--and from this point on, this entire review is, be warned, a SPOILER ALERT.... I couldn't comprehend why this young woman would have given up a career and moved back to a small town filled with such MEAN PEOPLE. Her former high school bestie and family don't show up for the funeral of the main character's grandmother because, as the bestie explains, they weren't invited...say what? Only a few pages further along, we learn that she was, indeed, present for the service, but didn't bother to make her presence known or offer any comfort or condolences. The next character to show up throws a veritable tantrum, snarling and complaining, because our heroine hasn't inherited her grandmother's psychic gifts and, after years of living far away, doesn't know every aspect of her late grandmother's life and business. WHY WOULD ANY ONE WANT TO RETURN TO LIVE IN A TOWN FILLED WITH SUCH MEAN PEOPLE? I gave up on the whole thing by Chapter 3.

Mystic Falls is set in Northern California in a quaint community named Coyote Wells; you have the ocean near by to enjoy, a town small enough that you can walk to almost where ever you want to go, an environment most of us would wish for. After a ten year absence Gemma Channing returns to Coyote Wells for her Gram's funeral. Gemma feels guilty because her Gram has raised her and Gemma has not returned as often as she should. Gemma soon learns that her Gram has left her all her worldly goods. Gemma learns that her Gram had a special gift and that she herself has inherited some of this gift of having special spiritual powers. This book is loaded with a fine cast of wonderful characters that each are colorful in their own right and makes this story that much more interesting. Two local women are missing, are they dead or alive, read to find out. Read to find out if there are any clues linking these two missing women, you will be well entertained and glad that you did. One moral I did get out of this great book is "To Thy Own Self Be True", read and find out what I mean by this.

The writing is always detailed and easy to follow in VMcKeehan’s books, and this book was the same. We easily connected to the characters. There was a good bit of mystery and suspense. Though the crimes were slow to solve, we were constantly being given other details and other side stories to keep entertained. I’m not a big fan of paranormal, but there just a little bit of mysticism in the book. Just enough to make it interesting but also not make you roll your eyes. Although the book is written with detail (sometimes too much for me) and the premise of the story is good, I had a hard time getting through it. It dragged on too much and was slow moving. I also got tired of the "relationship" pitfalls, past and present, with the main characters ex husband. His continual brooding about the past made me skip a lot of the rehashing of their past and I just wanted to scream at him, "It's over...move on."To me, this could have been a more interesting book if the author would have brought out more of the main characters psychic abilities or threw in her Grandmother's appearance every once in a while to help her solve the murders.

This new series is awesome . I love This author and how she works out the story with so much depth. Loved Lando and Gemma they had known each other their whole life then married young but due to circumstances and youth they divorced. Then years later Gamma comes back because her grandmother died and realizes this is where she should have always been. Catching up with friends and learning about new gifts and dealing with them. Plus Lando is still in town can they find their way back to beach other and find out what happens to get grandmother.Great read and was a page turner.

These elves have always been fascinated by Enochian and the question of whether Edward Kelley actually channeled this "language", or made it up to con Dr. Dee falls in the same category as the question about Carlos Castaneda's validity. In our minds, it doesn't really matter. The magic is real regardless.This particular volume is doubly valuable. First, it is a comprehensive dictionary for Enochian and thus a valuable reference work for our library, although Enochian still strikes us as a very limited language form. And second, the foreward by Lon Milo Duquette, the prefaces by Stephen Skinner, and the introduction by Donald C. Laycock are well worth reading in their own right. In fact, Lon Milo tells us of some of his own experiences in using Enochian and we must say his true tales of magical experience are what we love best about his works. I really dont buy into this as being real, and i am not a believer in the occult. However, this was a entertaining read, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It shipped and arrived very quickly.

This book is very detailed and is layed out in a way that you can master the information quickly enough for it to be immediately useful. Not to be taken lightly, since as with any foreign language there are nuances that must be understood so as not to convey the wrong message to the entity or misinterprete what has been recieved in kind....

AWESOME BOOK

If you are interested in the Enochian language, and in understanding some of the finer points in the language, this book is for you. No, it doesn't have an in-depth grammar or even an easy way to conjugate verbs and nouns. But, it does have definitions of a lot of words; and, it has a lot of variations and variant spellings of words. I have found it immensely useful in creating Enochian rituals and prayers.This book is for those who are interested in exploring the language deeper than just stumbling through the calls. The foreword and preface are also helpful -- but the real strength is in the lists of words. You won't be sorry you bought this one.

Singer's Corporate Warriors is an excellent book about the world of private military firms (also called private military security contractors).When he wrote this, the United States was not yet involved in Iraq, let alone against ISIS. It was updated in 2008 as Barack Obama was running for president so it has been somewhat updated though not completely. It could definitely use another given the events of the past eight years.Nonetheless, it is an invaluable introduction to the subject (there are several newer books available now), a subject about which I knew very little going in. It presents a disturbing picture of the world in which private military firms are largely unregulated by both national and international law, presenting all sorts of potential difficulties. We have already seen some of these in the Abu Ghraib scandal and in the behavior of Blackwater during the Iraq War and subsequent occupation and civil war.Singer goes into great detail regarding the history and development of these contractors and the various uses for which they have been hired by our own and foreign governments. There is an example order of battle and a sample contract, both of which are very illuminating. It is heavily footnoted and you can tell Mr. Singer, who is known also for his books about robots and warfare and cybersecurity, did his homework.Highly recommended for anyone interested in the subject or in national security and foreign policy.

Mr Singer provides an excellent study of a millenia-old dynamic: the use of mercenaries in warfare. Of course, today's mercs are referred to in much different, politically-correct terms - but that doesn't change the basic principle on which these warrior-for-hire are founded. It is important, though, to understand the changes in the days even since Executive Outcomes, and the evolution that has taken place since then. This work, along with several other written in recent years, do a functional service to the global public by helping to educate those unfamiliar with this often misunderstood profession, its corporte backers, and the entities that hire them today. In my opinion, there is definitely a role for private military companies (call them what you will) in this modern world, and there is little question that - just as they were used 2,000 years ago - the mercenary will always have a role to play in international conflicts. Having attended some training at Blackwater and met Eric Prince (following 9/11, prior to Blackwater becoming a rent-a-cop's dream vacation), and having worked in the national security field, this subject is of intense interest to me, personally. This work furthered my knowledge on the subject and I think should be read by everyone who has an interest in national and international security.

In Corporate Warriors, Singer provides historical background for the hiring of private military personnel and then describes their contemporary use globally. He notes that the employment of mercenary soldiers began thousands of years ago. But as modern states developed, governments moved to place all military forces under their control. Reliance on hired soldiers declined significantly by the beginning of the twentieth century. During the Cold War, U.S. and Soviet forces provided military assistance to the armies of developing nations reducing the inclination of those countries to hire mercenaries. Singer explains that changing economic and political conditions fostered the rise of modern private military companies. He notes that the market place has ended the state’s monopoly over violence and that private military companies are now active all over the world. The hiring of private military companies appears to have increased for a number of reasons. The reduction of the U.S. armed forces after the end of the Cold War led to a renewed market for private military contractors. It may be cheaper for small or weak states to hire private military companies when they perceive the need for force rather than maintaining sizeable standing armies. Certain corporations and humanitarian groups may hire private military companies for protection in dangerous areas where local police are too few, too corrupt or too incompetent. Demobilization of armed forces after the end of the Cold War increased the availability of weapons and trained military personnel in search of new jobs. Singer also describes how the 2003 Iraq War provided new opportunities for private military companies. This book is a fascinating and enlightening examination of an internationally important topic..

P.W. Singer has presented a real world portrayal of the way military operations are trending. There is a much deeper story to be had in the operations that a supported as private companies that are true government operations that hide in plain view. Companies started, ran, and operated by the US government but stand opening as supposed private companies. I am not, in any way, saying that is bad. It provides total control over a situation by controlling all facets of the operation. The story is much more interesting but if truly told would hobble their efforts. A story that would stand so firmly as fiction that the truth could be boldly told and believed by no one. The public would find it absurd that such an operation could go unnoticed standing so openly for all to see. A job well done here in the book and to those that operate secretly in plain view. You know that you've struck gold when you don't want to return a picture book to the library. I kept hold of this one until the last day, and it legitimately saddened me to drop it in the return chute. I now have it on order from Amazon. I do not buy very many books, but I cherish the ones that I do. For me, this is an instant classic.The illustrations, done in pen and watercolor on handmade paper, are beautiful. I consistently enjoy McDonnell's style and this one doesn't disappoint.The story starts out cute enough and gets better as it goes along. Three little friends have a fun time during a sleepover. When it's time to lay down, they go over all the things they are thankful for during the day. The prose here is beautiful. The ending, which was a happy little twist, filled my heart with unexpected joy. I could read this one every night to my children.

McDonnell blends humor and a sensitive message of gratitude beautifully. A MUST have! My three year old had me read it three times in a row the first night.

Oh my gosh, what an adorable book! Everything about this book is fantastic...the characters are absolutely adorable, the storyline is cute, and illustrations are well done. My kids all liked this book - especially my 3 yr old. Makes a great bedtime storybook!

My 2 year old daughter loves this book, it's her new favorite. It's a sweet story about friends, what we're thankful for and sharing. We read it every night and it helps get her settled into her crib at bedtime.

Thank you and Good Night is a lovely little story that encourages imaginations and nurtures grateful hearts. It harkens back to the days of Goldilocks, Winnie the Pooh, Babar and the Velveteen Rabbit. Patrick McDonnell's drawings and colors are exquisite, and his bedtime rhyme is especially touching. You will count your blessings after reading this dreamy tale of Maggie and her three animal friends.

The drawings make this book. It's perfect for end-of-the-day reading and delivers a fun twist at the end. My daughter loves the character names, which were probably chosen for their obvious alliteration qualities. I like the idea of teaching kids to be grateful for the simple things in life.

I love this book. Such a sweet little story! Teaches appreciation for simple pleasures and good friends by example, not by preaching. An important lesson for any toddler/preschooler. We are not religious, so this aproach to greatfulness is even more appreciated by me.

I love everything about this book, including the heartfelt text and adorable art. It's a fun story to read - about a sleepover - and children can be encouraged to recall things they are thankful for before going to sleep. And I love the surprise ending.
