This is a new print edition of a late 19th Century translation that is in the public domain. The original is available as a PDF file from Google. This edition has the advantage of being an actual print version that you can hold and read, and is quite inexpensive. It doesn't have the extensive footnotes of the original translation however, which is a drawback. It is just the Chinese text, and the translation to English without any commentary or explanation of the translation. Worth having for the Bilingual text, and affordable. You might want to get access to the PDF of the original, or have another version for the commentary. Part of the Dragon Reader series on the Confucian Classics.
Very useful to scholars studying Confucian texts to have a bilingual edition. Having it and other such bilingual Chinese classics in Kindle makes it easy to copy text from either language into other files for further use. The James Legge translation is over 150 years old, and has been surpassed by many recent translations also available on Kindle. Most criticism of Legge's work is that it reflects his Christian understanding of Chinese philosophy. Nevertheless, Legge's is still a benchmark for what has come later.
The English is a little archaic, but still this gives original Chinese characters and gloss. For modern language student -- or younger Chinese -- modern Pinyin with tones might be a welcome addition. In recent years a lot of research has been done on the history and meaning of these texts, though newer translations also tend to follow the traditional explain. Recommended promarily for student of Chinese who want to stick their toes into the classical language
There are many errors in the translation. not worth buying
The formatting is excellent. The content is beautiful.But I'm still new to Chinese, so pinyin would have been nice.
Bought as a present, no complaints.
