Waistcoats & Weaponry is the third book in the Finishing School Series. This world is a blend of paranormal, steampunk, and some romance. I love this world so much! It’s like someone sat down and took everything that I love and put it all together. Sophronia has now been at Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing School for Girls of Quality for sit months and it is now time for a review.I am not going to say anything about the plot because I do not want to spoil anything from the previous books. I really love the world that these books live in. No matter how I am feeling these books always make me smile and laugh. They are so wonderful that way.“Oh, Pill, I really would like to help, but we seem to be in the middle of some kind of whose-top-hat-is-the-biggest contest.”As this world blossoms so does these characters. They grow so wonderfully. With each book I find myself liking each one more for different reasons. She grows each character in their own direction and yet they all work as a whole. I am not sure that makes much sense. I have tried to explain that a few different ways over the last few days and I just can’t seem to get the words out. This friend group is true friendship goals.Sophronia learns how to use most amazing intelligencer accessory a bladed fan. Sorry, I had to mention it, and it’s on the cover so not really a spoiler.I so want one!!!

This is the third book in the Finishing School series. Sophronia is enjoying school and has just begun working with a bladed fan, which she believes may become her favorite weapon of choice. Things get serious when Sidheag gets word that there is serious trouble with her pack back in Scotland. The gang form a plan to use a birthday party to get Sidheag back up to Scotland. When things go haywire with the mechanicals at the party, the group makes an escape and hijacks a train which contains a former classmate and now nemesis, working for the vampires. In addition to their mission, Sophronia is also thinking about the contrasts between Sooty and Lord Felix and the possibility of finding a patron to further her career goals. Their mission becomes more complex when they unravel a deadly plot and Sophronia must chose which side she will support.

I haven't read many steampunk books, but the first book in this series, Etiquette & Espionage (Finishing School #1), was a fun read. I enjoyed it more than this one--I missed #2, I see. That was Curtsies & Conspiracies.There are many of the earlier characters, including villains, also devices and new inventions--plus Victorian rules that the characters must adhere to--Sophronia, not so much. There's adventure, fun, mystery, and complicated relationships. The beginning is a bit slow, even though there's usually something happening, and the dialogue is enjoyable.My favorite characters are Sophronia and Bumbersnoot, her mechanimal. if you've read the first book or two, be prepared for changes and plot twists. I am curious as to how the storyline will be resolved. The fourth and last book in the series is Manners & Mutiny, and I want to know what happens next.

The dangers mount in book 3, as all the girls mature. Sophoria as usual is resistant to the budding male-female relationship potential as both Soap and young Lord Mersey are attracted to her, and even Pillman almost ends up engaged when her Mother catches them alone in the garden. In this book everyone's loyalty, values and finally their affiliation are put to the test. This is Steampunk at its best.The 3 books of this YA version predate the Parasol Protectorate and contain several characters that will reappear much more maturely in the next series. Although I have read this backwards, I believe that the most enjoyment would be in starting here and then going into the rest. The YA classification in no way subtracts from adult reading anymore than it did in the Harry Potter series. In fact those who miss HP will find Gail Carriger a witty, fun, well written series that will more than satisfy you. I am hoping for another book in the Finishing School Series as although this concluded well, I am wondering what will be happening to Soap, Lord Mersey, Sophoria and the rest.

Sophronia’s studies in espionage are disturbed when a friend of hers gets a urgent letter from home. Something troubling has happened regarding Sidheag’s werewolf pack and like a true friend and intelligencer Sophronia must do something in the matter.But like always Sophronia manages to get herself and her group of friends tangled in an even bigger scheme that concerns the Picklemen and the vampires.This, like the other books in the series, is a fast paced and fun book. Things are getting more serious and Sophrina must soon chose a side and choose where her heart lies. I’m excited to start reading the last book in this series and find out how this all ends.

His family and his town are immersed in Norse traditions and mythology and are town leaders. His grandfather is the mayor and his father the Chief of Police. But Matt didn't know that he was to be the Champion when Ragnarok, the end of the world, came again. He certainly doesn't feel ready of qualified. He feels even less ready when he overhears his grandfather and the other elders say that they expect him to win but to die in the trying.Fen Brekke also knows that he is a descendant of Loki. He can turn into a wolf. But his home situation is bad. His parents are gone and he is passed from relative to relative for fostering. His only friend, and the only person he really cares about, is his cousin Laurie. Laurie doesn't know about being a descendant of Loki. Her mother is ordinary and her father drifts in and out of her life. Laurie is constantly trying to keep Fen out of trouble and Fen is determined to protect her from all dangers.Fen and Matt don't get along. But if Matt wants to rewrite the myths and survive Ragnarok, he and Fen will have to put aside their differences so that the descendants of Thor and of Loki can work together to save them all.This story is a journey story wherein Matt, Fen and Loki try to gather allies who will help them in their upcoming fight. With limited guidance from the Norns, they head off to gather allies while running from the wolf pack that wants Fen to join. They are also trying to avoid Matt and Laurie's parents who have put out APBs for those two. It is rather telling that no one seems to care that Fen is missing.The story is well-written but a little incomplete. Further volumes are definitely needed to answer the unanswered questions. This story could encourage readers to explore more Norse mythology to find out more about the old gods who are Matt, Fen and Laurie's ancestors.

Well, it's no secret I'm a Kelley fan. I've read just about everything she has ever published, regardless of genre. I haven't read anything by Melissa Marr but Kelley's name was enough to grab me; add in Norse mythology and I was sold. But...middle grade? I don't read it very often and much of it makes me want to gouge my eyes out. But, it's Kelley and it's mythology and it's a mythology that hasn't been done to death already. So, I ordered my copy.The authors didn't let me down. Armstrong and Marr wrote a fantastic adventure story full of heartbreak, betrayal, growing up, and learning to trust; trust yourself, trust your instincts, trust each other. The main kids, Matt, Laurie and Fen feel real but aren't obnoxious and the others they pick up along the way, Baldwin, twins Ray and Reyna, and Astrid, are also realistic. It's a struggle for everyone to learn to trust each other and to work together. Matt naturally steps into the role of leader but it's a role he struggles with as he lacks confidence in his ability to lead and to stop Ragnarok and of course he makes mistakes along the way.If you're not up on Norse mythology, or if like me it's been years since you read any, don't worry, the authors weave it naturally into the story. If you find it piques your interest, try out Kevin Hearne's adult urban fantasy series, the Iron Druid Chronicles where he mixes Norse, Celtic and other mythologies.The story is not all angst; there's lots of action as Matt, Laurie and Fen leave home to find their remaining companions, encounter adults who don't understand, trolls who want treasure, etc. They not only have to find their other companions but acquire certain objects and pass a test before they can actually stop Ragnarok. There's only two books left and still a lot of ground to cover. Will they be successful? Will Matt and the others save the world? Will they survive the process? Will I survive waiting a year for the next book? "Loki's Wolves" is a wonderful, engrossing tale smartly moves Norse mythology into the modern world. Go get a copy now!I own this book.

We studied Norse mythology this year and these books were a fabulous accompaniment! I'd highly suggest getting all 3 at once if you have an avid reader; because, my daughter read all three in just two days.

I purchased this book as a light read for a long flight. It is very reminiscent of the Percy Jackson series and is a fun read. Although it really doesn't provide readers with a complete understanding of the underlying Norse stories and myths, it did provide me with a wonderful escape from the tedium of today's air flights.

WARNING: *SPOILER ALERT!*I like this book a lot, so I have to give a quick spoiler and then point out why I rated it four stars instead of five.Matt (and mostly all other people that live in Blackwell), is a son of Thor, the Norse God of thunder. What puts him special over the rest, is that he is the champion of Thor. Matt, with two other friends, go on many adventures to save the world from Ragronok (the end).The second book continues the first and the third book continues the second.The reason I rated it 4 stars instead of five, is that you have to basically hang in there till like the tenth chapter. After that, then things get really heated up and exciting.

And three, while she's at it. My ancestry, on my father's side, is Northern. You can look at my complexion and see a Viking right there. So, of course, a story built around old Norse myths is right up my alley. But more than that, it's a darned good book! Think you've got it rough? Consider if you discover that you're the one chosen to represent Thor in the final battle for the world! Your whole family is named Thoreson, but you're the only one that has to battle a giant serpent. (And you thought your life was unfair, huh?) A great adventure set in the upper Midwest. I only hope the sequels are quickly nearing release!

While I was preparing for the Audit portion of the CPA exam, I was having trouble even remotely understanding the Audit sampling section of my CPA Exam preparation course. After scanning the table of contents via Amazon preview, I noticed that this book had 10-12 pages that covered that sampling. After I got the book and studied that section, I had a 100% better understanding of Audit Sampling in about 30 minutes. I was then able to easily answer (most) of the questions of my prep course.Additionally, I found some of the other chapters very helpful in explaining other auditing topics in more colloquial language than my CPA course used. This helped me understand difficult topics more quickly and allowed me to maximize my study time.Most of the topics I read about were heavily tested on my exam, which I barely passed. I don't think I would have passed the exam had I not had this book. Considering the time and cost of preparing for the exam, this book was invaluable.

I purchased this book just for the basics of auditing. This book was probably created with a "dummy" in mind, well dumb to the subject if he or she has never studied it before. I am not planning to use this book for a thesis or anything but it does contain some basics on the subject of auditing. I recommend this for just basic information only. I can see a college instructor's face and reaction if this book is used for anything other than simply reading it.

This book is a real beginner's book for someone who aspires to learn what auditing is all about.Having said that, this book is far from becoming a supplement to preparing for CPA exam or for a college audit course.

Helped break things down while studying for the audit section of the CPA exam. This is NOT a CPA review book, but can help break down some topics you may struggle with to 'dummy' level

Culture is something we all think we know, but is incredibly difficult to explain. Stonestreet and Kunkle navigate this obstacle commendably. In defining and explaining their view of culture they enable the reader to understand their prescriptions throughout the book.*This book is not full of alarmism. Many books of this type from similar sorts of authors are pessimistic and "sky is falling" tomes. This is not true here. Throughout the work the authors do not shy away from pointing out what they think is going wrong in the culture, but there is always an undertone of hope. In fact, the hope they have often moves from being an undertone to downright, in your face hope. It was incredibly refreshing to read a book on culture by Christians that wasn't condemning of the culture. Instead they want to redeem and restore it.*The authors avoid being overly partisan. It is clear these authors are conservative both theologically and politically. However, they are quick to criticize some sacred cows of their own camp. Two examples come quickly to mind. First, in the chapter on racism they are quite critical of the common conservative retort "All lives matter" to the Black lives matter movement. Stonestreet and Kunkle rightly explain that "yes, all lives matter-including preborn ones-but we ought not give the impression that we aren't carefully listening to the concerns of those specific fellow image bearers who believe their value is being dismissed"-290. Another example is when the authors attack much of the method people use for reading the Bible. They rightly criticize reading the Bible by wrenching verses, stories, and even whole books from their context. It is not a magic book and we should spend time actually reading and studying it, not finding prooftexts for our pet issues.*Also, this book is hugely practical. This should go without saying because the title is A Practical Guide to Culture. However, this book has its finger on the pulse of culture in ways many similar books attempt but never reach. Stonestreet and Kunkle give "action steps" for everything they write about.*Lastly (though there is a lot more done well), this book is permeated with scripture. It almost oozes with scripture. There are at least 164 direct references to scripture and many more indirect references. This was very nice because it would have been easy to write this book without the counsel of scripture. However, the authors were not content with the easy job. They wanted to show they have wrestled with this subject in light of God's word.*There is a lot more that is done well, but to explain more is beyond the scope of this review.What it lacks: *This book is not as nuanced as Niebuhr's Christ and Culture or Carson's Christ and Culture Revisited nor as academic as Myer's Understanding the Culture, but to be fair it isn't meant to be. This is a practical guide to culture and it reads that way.*One thing I have a small problem with is the discussion of "calling" at the very end of the book. The authors define calling in a common way that I wrestle with. They see calling as the intersection where our vocation and our worship or mission are most effective and most gratifying. Now, I would hope people are effective in their mission and gratified in their work, however, I am not sure this is the biblical definition of calling. As I read the Bible, it looks like we all have the same calling and we can fulfill that calling in any place as long as it isn't inherently sinful. Also, the authors quote Frederick Buechner in saying (in a roundabout manner) that it is unlikely we are fulfilling our mission and worship if our "work is writing TV deodorant commercials." Now the authors may not agree with Buechner wholesale here, but I think it is entirely possible to write deodorant commercials for God's glory.Some quick highlights: "Too many Christians have a tendency to react to what is loudest and noisiest in our culture, which often means overreacting to what isn't ultimately important and underreacting to what is."-21"...culture's greatest influence is in what it presents as being normal. Clearly, not all that seems normal ought to be, but what is left unexamined is also left unchallenged."-28"Culture tends to shape us most deeply by what it presents as normal. We are creatures of cultural habit. Our loves, our longings, our loyalties, and our labors can become products of the liturgies our culture imposes. We live according to them but rarely think through them. Unintentionally, we become culture shaped rather than intentional about shaping culture."-39"Telling us 'That's bad, so stay away' didn't work"-42"Asking 'Where do I draw the line?'-called the line approach to culture-is too simplistic to be helpful. First, not everything labeled Christian is good, and not everything labeled secular is bad. Much that is labeled Christian-movies, songs, leaders, schools, churches, ministries, and organizations-fails to reach basic levels of excellence and honesty. And much that is labeled secular accurately portrays fallen humanity, displays artistic genius, and brings good to the world. As Gregory Thornbury, the president of The King's College, is fond of saying, ''Christian' is the greatest of all possible nouns and lamest of all possible adjectives.' It's meant to describe a person, not a thing."-45"We often think of compromise when it comes to beliefs and behaviors, but a particularly subtle temptation is to compromise in our methods."-70"The ignore-controversial-subjects-and-they'll-go-away approach to raising kids won't do. In the information age, plenty of voices are willing to talk with our kids if we aren't."-82-83"The issue of trust is complicated only if kids think that so-called Christian authorities are untrustworthy."-83"...if we don't know whom it is we are educating and whom they should become, education devolves into a disconnected hodgepodge of classes, skill acquisition, test taking, activities, and degrees. Now think of fashion, business, public policy, health care, biomedical ethics, or even youth groups. We won't know what to do in these areas if we aren't first clear on who humans are. And it's clear we aren't clear about that."-102"Instruction is necessary, of course, but discipleship happens not when we talk at our kids but when we walk with them through their struggles to a place of commitment."-110"Our kids learn their tech habits from us."-120"In many ways, adolescence is now-and this must not be missed-the goal of our culture. Somewhere along the way, we ceased to be a culture where kids aspire to be adults, and we became a culture where adults aspire to be kids, or at least adolescents, forever."-133"Rules can provide wise and appropriate boundaries, but following rules shouldn't be confused with Christian maturity. Rules can't show us the heart of a person. While rules may help limit the bad influences and temptations 'out there' they leave unaddressed the problems 'in here,' in the human heart."-138"Can we Christians stop not talking about sex, please? For too long, we've let other voices direct and dominate the cultural conversation on sex. Much of the church's contribution has been to shout 'Don't do it!' from the margins of society. We've given the impression that Christianity has a negative view of sex. But God's story offers so much more than a simple no to unsanctioned sex. For every prohibition, there is a beautiful, life-giving yes!"-173-174"The goal for Christians isn't to be blind to color but to embrace the distinctive qualities and uniqueness of God's image bearers."-290"Rather than reject God's exclusive plan, we should be grateful in the way a diseased patient rejoices when a cure is found. The redemption and restoration we have through the exclusive means of Jesus' death and resurrection are cause for celebration. That's why it's called the gospel-it's good news."-327Recommendation?: I highly recommend this book. Stonestreet and Kunkle have clearly explained their view of how Christians can navigate in today's culture. They do this by advocating to challenge and influence the culture, not by withdrawal or wholesale acceptance of culture. This is a book that is useful for anyone who cares about their own influence or their kid's spirituality. I can only hope that it is updated every few years to keep up with the issues in the culture of the time.

In it, John Stonestreet and Brett Kunkle pull no punches and shy away from no topics in their effort to help parents walk their kids through a secular culture that has become empty of meaning.In fact, after I had read about four chapters, I sent an email out to several friends who are parents of teenagers and young adults. I asked if they'd like to read through it together and meet weekly to discuss each chapter. That's how impressed I am with this book, and how important I think it is.The book begins with a very helpful definition of what culture is, how it is formed, how it forms us, and why it is so important. It then goes on to define “the Big Story of reality," the Scriptures, which describe reality as it really is. Cultural mindsets shift, but reality doesn't change. As Stonestreet and Kunkle put it, "One might refuse to believe in gravity, but stubbornness doesn't change truthfulness." The Scriptures are like gravity—they are true whether or not we believe them.​This lays the groundwork to get into some hot-button topics like homosexuality, transgenderism, pornography, "hook-up culture," consumerism, addiction, entertainment, and racial tension. These subjects are all treated with biblical clarity and compassion. Rounding out the book is an accessible and practical description of the Christian worldview, “the Big Story of reality." We can only live biblically in our culture if we understand how to read the Bible and how its message contrasts with the worldview of those around us.When they say this is a "practical" guide to culture, they aren't kidding. Note that the cookies are baked in two batches, so that you have time to mold them while they are still warm and soft. Makes about 8 cookie cups 1 stick (4 ounces) butter, at room temperature 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, sifted 6 egg whites 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1. Preheat the oven at 375 degrees F. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper and draw four circles 5 inches in diameter on each piece of paper. 2. Invert four heatproof, 2-inch-wide glasses or cups on the counter so they are ready when the tuiles come out of the oven. 3. In a mixing bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the sifted flour, egg whites, and vanilla. Beat until well blended. 4. Spoon the batter into the circles on one baking sheet and spread to the edges with an offset spatula. The batter will be very thin. 5. Bake the tuiles for 5 to 6 minutes, or until the edges become golden brown. 6. Remove from the oven and immediately use a wide spatula to invert each tuile over a glass. Using a mitt, gently press to form into a cup shape. As soon as the tuiles are set, gently lift them off the glasses. 7. Whisk the batter briefly and form the remaining 4 tuiles. Bake and form as directed above. When all the tuile cups are cool and set, store in a covered container until ready for use.

He shares recipes for many of the Kennedy family favorites as well as personal anecdotes in this coffee table book, packed with candid snapshots of the American royals at their New England compound. His recipes are simple and straightforward preparations of classic fare such as Crème Brulee, Poached Salmon, Crab Cakes and Apple Pie, with an occasional twist like Coconut-Crusted Chicken with Mango Cream. Though solid, most of the dishes feel cribbed from the culinary public domain; Chocolate Chip Cookies, French Toast and Chicken Salad are all unremarkable rehashes. Moreover, the book's large size makes propping it up on the kitchen counter a dubious prospect. The books' real appeal is Connelly's warm and candid stories about working for the Kennedys. He recounts a visit by the Bolshoi Ballet in the late 1980s, Oprah Winfrey's sampling of a luscious Chocolate Eagle at Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger's wedding luncheon, as well as clambakes and holiday gatherings. Those looking for a compilation of rudimentary recipes could do worse, but it's the Kennedy archivists who will get the most out of this book. This is a treat for Kennedy fans to be able to re-create some of their favorite recipes right in your own home! There is a wide variety of food in here with beautiful photographs. The author included appetizers, main courses, lunches, desserts, etc. There is a lot of seafood in here since there is plenty of it at the Cape. The author also includes anecdotes and photos of members of the Kennedy family (the chocolate chip cookies and brownies were a favorite of JFK Jr.'s to take on boat trips). The author also describes for the reader the famous clambakes that the Kennedy family had every Labor Day and gives the steps for making a fake clambake at home. This is a book to treasure for a long time and to share with others. Highly recommended. I would give it 10 stars if I could!

Great recipes, great photos....This book has lots of recipes that you can make at home without having to find exotic ingredients. Mouthwatering photos. Just when I thought I had enough cookbooks, I found one more.

Beautifully illustrated and also quite revealing on the Kennedy lifestyle of Old Joe, Rose and the offspring. At times, the copy can be a trifle nauseating, but this is an important volume for any collector of insights on JFK's family. Recipes are excellent.

This cookbook is a must have, because it's such an enjoyable read. Beautiful photos and stories of the Kennedy family, plus amazing recipes.

I own lots of cook books but this one is great. I have made a few recipes and found them easy to follow and taste great. I enjoy the stories in the book and it makes the recipes that much more interesting. Even if you do not cook I think you would enjoy this book. I makes a great gift

To understand why Animal Moves is so important, you need to first understand something about Darryl Edwards, its author. Darryl is a recovering analyst programmer, technical team lead, data architect, and technical architect who had a wildly successful career in Silicon Valley. After having a serious personal epiphany when he realized going to the gym to workout may result in the appearance of fitness, but doesn’t translate into functional fitness.Thereafter Darryl approached the subject of fitness with the same detailed and comprehensive analysis he had been professionally trained to do in tech: He went through every commonly practiced form of exercise, everything from Crossfit to Movnat, in an effort to discover the most functional form of fitness there is (the most practical and broadly applicable to a new unique real life scenario). Wow! This book (and the movements/exercises inside it) are a total paradigm shift from what we normally consider 'exercise' — miserable, repetitive, and grueling activities that we dread doing and can't wait to finish. After reading this book and learning/doing the moves, your ideas about exercise will be TOTALLY TRANSFORMED. It's all about unleashing your inner animal, getting playful, engaging in movements that your body has almost forgotten how to do, but yearns to do! This stuff is so much fun, and it also works as a total fitness routine. I've been doing these movements for almost a month now, and all I can say is WOW! My lower back pain has gone away, I'm leaner and stronger, and there's a difference in how I carry myself — I've gotten a bunch of comments actually. Darryl Edwards is a revolutionary, reconnecting us with our innate capacity and desire to play and move our body in so many creative new ways. I'm so happy I found this book!

I've been a fan of Darryl's work for some time, but haven't had the opportunity to attend a workshop to learn the Primal Play method. This much anticipated book is the next best thing. The program is simple and the effect substantial in my case. You will be moving every day, some being more intense than others, and there are opportunities for free play and restoration/recovery as well. Given that each session lasts a maximum of 30 minutes or so, you might be tempted to simply add this to whatever you're already doing. I would encourage you to simplify things and spend the next 28 days following this program alone. I feel that you will more fully immerse yourself in the approach and movements, and be able to give yourself fully to each session, thus maximizing the opportunity to learn, grow and progress. And progress you will. What seems awkward at first becomes more and more natural, which is really the point. In addition to gaining strength, conditioning and mobility, you may find old aches and pains disappearing. In my case, a persistent shoulder pain disappeared after the first 4 sessions. Your results may vary, but I believe that anyone, regardless of current condition or age would benefit greatly from following the 28 day Animal Moves program. There's really nothing else quite like it.

As a former gymnast and someone who remembers childhood clearly, I can tell you that these moves are a lot more difficult than they look and they also feel right on a deep level. I can remember being a child running through the grass, throwing balls, chasing friends, climbing trees, playing games, pushing myself to my physical limits and coming home completely exhausted yet satisfied. These moves recapture that youthful type of play, in other words, they reconnect us to what used to come so naturally.I have never been one to love the gym. As a child I loved gymnastics because of how dynamic it is, it mimicked how I played outside. But as an adult it felt like I was betraying myself every time I got a gym membership and tried to work out. It always felt like something was missing, I longed to be outside and to become so engaged in an activity that I lost track of time. In the gym my usual experience was being painfully aware of every second that passed by.This book is like a manual on how to play like a kid as an adult (although anyone of any age can do them, and parents you can do these with your kids!). If that sounds like it means these moves aren’t effective then you have to remember how serious play time was to you. As children, play was actually hard work, we were just having too much fun to realize it. I can also say as a gymnast I never did anything like these moves and even at my most fit they would have been a challenge.After doing these moves I am extremely sore but I’m also eager to do them again! They are a fun challenge which can be a difficult balance to find.To sum it up, if you’re looking to get out of the gym, get fit and have a great time doing it by reconnecting with your younger, more playful self, then start here!
