About the Author

Our location in the Wisconsin northwoods helps keep Willow Creek Press off the publishing world's radar. Around here, we're more accustomed to landing walleyes and muskies than big books and authors - events hardly worthy of note in Publisher's Weekly. But, a few years ago we did get noticed with the release of Just Labs, a unique and colorful tribute to Labrador retrievers. The book quickly became a bestseller (now with 500,000 copies in print) and frankly startled us with its success. We were not surprised for long, however, and now an entire line of popular Willow Creek Press titles evokes the myriad joys of dog and cat ownership. Today we are known for high-quality, light-hearted books and the best Just breed calendars in the country.

While the second volume of Transmet lost a little of the punch the first volume had, it fails to lose it's must read status. Ellis and Robertson's sci-fi is something I can recommend for everyone. This volume makes a much more focused effort to look at the 'futuristic' elements of the setting. The first few issues explore the issues of human-tech integration, cryogenics, and cultural preservation. But after that, it shifts to exploring Spider's backstory in the last arc. There, we learn a little more about Spider's ex-wife, and what Spider was like before he went up the mountain. One thing I didn't like about this volume was how they handled Channon. I don't want to spoil it, but I hope Ellis does a better job in the future. That said, it's not enough to bring down the whole story. Spend the money, trust me.

Even though subsequent volumes in Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson's TRANSMETROPOLITAN series would surpass this very diverse collection of stories, it is still a first rate addition to the series. It is always outrageous, frequently funny, sometimes absurd, but always stimulating. There two aspects of the series that make it especially interesting to me. First, no other comic series explores the meaning of the media in general and the Fourth Estate in particular. For all his cynicism and rebelliousness, anti-hero Spider Jerusalem is a journalist who believes that reporting should strive to make the world a better place . . . or at least not quite so bad. Sometimes Spider's posing and stunts get in the way of that, but Ellis does manage to get the story back around to that conceit from time to time. Second, the series goes further than any other I know in looking at the furthest extremes of what people will do to remake and reconstruct themselves. Many writers have pointed out that ours is already a Cyborg culture. How else can you characterize someone who has an artificial hip, a pacemaker, and lasik eye surgery? Other writers, like Ray Kurzweil and Hans Moravec, have fantasized about a utopian future in which the human brain is sliced up and downloaded into a database, where one's consciousness can enjoy a virtual immortality (though personally, I just think of this as a bizarre way to die). Many of these notions are taken up and explored in the Transmet series. The two books that begin the series are good, but newcomers should keep in mind that it gets much better in subsequent volumes. So while I recommend this, I even more strongly recommend reading the volumes that follow.

"I Hate it Here." Perhaps this best sums up the personality of Spider Jerusalem, renegade reporter and cynic of the first degree. Disgusted by the world around him, he leaves the city and lives as a hermit.Years after his escape, his publisher drags him back into the city, wanting the books he was promised five years back. Needing money to live in the city, he whores himself out to The Word, a newspaper run by an old friend. These are his "adventures."Spider is brilliant, witty, and cynical. Through his eyes, Ellis gives an outlook of a bizarre future in which Aliens have landed, corporate America manages to advertise in your dreams, and reporters can write off their drug habits as a journalistic expense. This is the second collection of Transmetropolitan, following back on the streets. Reprinted are issues 4-12. Spider is both hostage and witness as events unfold. Fortunately, it's ammunition which he fires right back at the world.Spider can turn anything into an article, from the consequences of cryogenic freezing and restoration to simple Television. He visits reservations from the sensible to the logical extreme, and provides political commentary (And even rearranges their bowels). He encounters death threats and tangles with religion.Let's not beat around the bushes here. This is a comic book. Fancy words aside, it's packages exactly as Spider-Man or Batman would be. That's where the similarities end. This is not aimed at children, and probably shouldn't be read by children. There is blood, gore, nudity, and thought-provoking materialWhat we do have is Warren Ellis' own use of the medium--A twisted, often dark, and humorous look at a futuristic world. his portrayal is brilliant, steps ahead of almost every other writer in the field of comics.Brilliance in such a simplistic medium. Such a refreshing and innovative series.

I liked the first thing. Papery pulp with pictures. I immediately assumed I would hate the second part. It happens. First part is excellent... wah, wah, wah, fail from there. But like a junkie I tried the second volume of this one. ... -contented sigh- Oh yeah. It's good.

Ellis fleshed out his darkly satiric future with foglets, corrupt cops, reservations, and revival shock. The world of the City is still grim, gross, manic, and brightly lit.

Transmetropolitan took me a while to warm up to. But I finally got on board it's 'volume 11' all-the-time future. A satirization of the future based on today's trends - with a protagonists that often seems insane but other times seems like one of the only few sane people.

This is really something I could say is a Graphic Novel without smirking. I'm no veteran when it comes to comics, but I've lent it out to a few people I know that are, and they rave about it as well. It's very much like a Fear And Loathing influenced cyberpunk tale of journalism in a future that, for all its random technical advances, is still populated by people and therefore still plagued by the same kinds of problems we face today.

Not as riveting as the first volume but definitely entertaining. Its an interesting world with great plots to explore in each issue.

Spider is that dude, THIS needs to be made into a movie, so many brilliant concepts of a future Earth.

The Portable Enlightenment Reader (Portable Library)

From the Back Cover

The Age of Enlightenment of the eighteenth century, also called the Age of Reason, was so named for an exultant intellectual movement that shook the foundations of Western civilization. In championing radical ideas such as individual liberty and an empirical appraisal of the universe through rational inquiry and natural experience, Enlightenment philosophers in Europe and America planted the seeds for modern liberalism, cultural humanism, science and technology, and laissez-faire capitalism. This volume brings together the era's classic works, with more than a hundred selections from a broad range of sources - including works by Kant, Diderot, Voltaire, Newton, Rousseau, Locke, Franklin, Jefferson, Madison, and Paine - that demonstrate the pervasive impact of Enlightenment views on philosophy and epistemology as well as on political, social, and economic institutions. Included are seminal discourses on science and religion, on the social contract, on the equality (and inequality) of the sexes and the races, and on economics and markets, as well as homages to nature and sexual pleasure, and poetry and opera librettos that embody the movement's social ideals.

Many historical anthologies focus upon a single theme and thus fail to provide their readers with an adequate range of sources. Yet Isaac Kramnick's Enlightenment Reader avoids this pitfall. This book will introduce you to the key texts of the period - in addition to many delightful works of which you may never have heard.Readers looking for pure philosophy will not be disappointed: the anthology contains a fine selection of excerpts from Bacon, Descartes, Leibnitz, Newton, Hume, Kant, and others. But the Enlightenment embodied more than abstract speculation, and Kramnick skillfully arranges sections on science, religion, art, morality, education, history, politics, economics, crime, war, gender, and race. Each topic draws upon a diverse array of authors. This gives the reader a sense of the popularity of Enlightenment thought, as well as its development from the middle of the seventeenth century to the start of the nineteenth. Intellectual giants like Voltaire, Rousseau, and Locke appear alongside a gallery of lesser-known but fascinating figures: Nicolas de Condorcet, mathematician and revolutionary terrorist; William Godwin, anarchist and lover of Mary Wollstonecraft; Olympe de Gouges, early feminist playwright; John Cleland, author of the scandalous Fanny Hill - a vital source for the study of eighteenth-century sexuality, and still hilarious after 270 years.Any collection as ambitious as Kramnick's is bound to have a few faults. The most glaring omission is George Berkeley, whose philosophy of radical skepticism makes no appearance. A few texts from writers outside of the Enlightenment tradition - I'm thinking of Goethe, Herder, and the Marquis de Sade - would have rounded out the reader's sense of the diversity of eighteenth-century thought. That said, I know Penguin has commissioned another volume in this series, on Romanticism, so I expect that some of these 'Counter-Enlightenment' authors will feature in the coming volume. These are all petty quibbles. If you are looking for a fresh and thorough introduction to the Western Enlightenment, Isaac Kramnick's Enlightenment Reader is the ideal place to start. This compendium brings to life one of the most important periods in the history of Europe and its colonies: you will find that the great men and women of the eighteenth century were just that - men and women - and yet no less great for their humanity. I am extremely pleased with my purchase, and I am confident that you will feel the same.

Perhaps the best of the "Portable" series by Viking-Penguin. The book covers the Enlightenment period from approximately 1650 through 1800, and is superbly edited by Isaac Kramnick. Covering such luminaries as Voltaire, Kant, Hume, Locke, Rousseau, Jefferson, Pope, Montesquieu, Franklin, Paine, Bentham, Adam Smith and a score of lesser known philosophers and writers; the book hits on major elements of the era - religion, politics, liberty, race, gender and slavery - among others.Within these 700 or so pages, the book provides the reader with an introduction to the Enlightenment and does so in such a way that there's an appreciation as to the role of this unique era in the foundation of our modern society. The selection of readings were both famous and obscure, but the reader is not left feeling that they didn't get a fair shake at the real elements of the philosophy that fueled the American and French revolutions, led to the establishment of the modern Western democracy, and continues to serve as a foundation of modern political and ethical thought. If there is one book for every student to read before they leave high school, or certainly college, it is this one. A must read.

More than forty years ago, when I was a college undergraduate, I ran across several lists books that were recommended reading for anyone who wanted to be truly educated. Those lists invariably included books such as Rousseau's "The Social Contract," The Federalist Papers, Voltaire's "Candide," and many other writings from the Enlightenment era (as well, of course, as other time periods). I dutifully noted the titles, and, wanting to consider myself an educated person, fully intended to read all of them.Well now I'm 62, and it's time for me to admit that I'm almost certainly never going to read "The Social Contract." This volume is for me and others like me, who are suffering from the "So Many Books, So Little Time" syndrome. The book contains a broad selection of writings from the major thinkers of the Enlightenment, which the editor defines roughly from the 1680's to the 1790's.What a marvelous time it must have been to be an intellectual! The barriers erected by the authority of the kings, priests, and classical writers were being shattered. The ability to ask new questions and propose new answers produced an almost intoxicating sense of infinite possibilities for the improvement - even the perfection - of human society. Some of the pieces in this book will seem hopelessly naive to our modern cynical minds; on the other hand, some of the points being made so excitedly and even belligerently are now taken for granted - and we are likely to read them and say, "What's the big deal? Everyone knows that." And then there are the debates about the most fundamental questions - such as the source of knowledge - that have yet to be resolved, and probably never will be.If you read this, you will almost certainly get caught up in the excitement of the exploration of the ideas. You will almost certainly have your own thoughts stimulated, and your own opinions challenged. And you can smugly pretend that you have read Roussseau, Locke, Hume, Kant, and Voltaire - and no one (except real scholars) will be the wiser.

Dr. Benjamin Dykes is a name that recently came onto my radar from two different sources, one was my personal astrology teacher Austin Coppock and the other was someone in my Golden Dawn Temple. Both of them said look for this guy and check out his stuff, it's for real. Immediately upon receiving the book Astrological Magic, I thumbed through it and read a bit here and there. I was impressed, right out of the gate.1) Everything is logical. He takes you through how to invoke the Elements, to the Planets, to the Signs and wraps it all up in a way that is encouraging to the student, rather than intimidating. If you own this book and utilize it, you should be able to consecrate any item, or invoke any energy you need, for nearly any purpose. The novice will recognize all the basics here, while the reader who possesses advanced imagination will be able to see how to incorporate it for literally any situation.2) I can see the proper, Ceremonial Magic training coming through in this work, yet without the tediousness, pedantic and arrogant flavor that turns away so many magicians. I can see Dr. Dykes and Jayne Gibson have very open minds towards schools of magick that are not part of their own current. Their encouragement of the use of music during ritual is something I felt was needed a long time ago. But they have taken that step and put it forth elegantly. I also bought the tracks that go with the book and they are perfect for the work at hand.3) The rituals are powerful. It's a common thing to tell a bit of mythic folklore, a story, as part of a ritual. When I did the Invocation of Aries, the simple telling of the story of The Golden Fleece hit me like I had never quite heard it before. The wording of the rituals is par excellence, simple yet strong.5 Stars.

The book is a series of rituals intended for the practitioner to invoke and assimilate the energy of each element/planet/zodiacal sign into their personal sphere in order to become a "better person" (read more balanced and conscious of his capabilities). It has a set of rituals for each of the five elements (spirit is included as the fifth) and after that there are seven rituals for each of the traditional planets (so no Uranus, Neptune and Pluto for the modern oriented) and lastly a series of twelve rituals for each of the zodiac signs. It relies heavily on the Golden Dawn system of Magic (abbreviated GD from now on), which means using pentagrams and hexagrams to invoke the energy of the element or planet. Some people hate the method since it uses too much repetitions of the same figure with very small variations depending on the specific energy to invoke; that, the complaint says, makes it confusing and easy to mix up. All the pentagram/hexagram material has been on the internet for years (even Wikipedia has an entry on it) but what really makes the material worth your money is that finally someone gives you a proper working order for them. What I consider a big omission is how long you should spend working with each element/planet, in the author's words the book is written as a basis for: "ongoing devotions, and more low-key consecrations and attunements". So the proposal is to just keep doing it without beginning or end which may not sit well with people oriented toward results. I understand the difficulty for the author to set a time frame for everybody, but it would have been nice to include a small note for the really new to magic explaining that this work probably will take years to complete in proper form.Of course it is not only tracing figures in the air, the authors include color guides for each ritual, incenses and aromas to use, they even suggest music, all to get you in the right frame of mind. The preface by Mr. Dykes includes a very good comment on how to plan your rituals from an electional astrology point of view. He starts with simple guidelines and then he goes into the complex criteria which are completely optional, but appreciated for the persons who want to go deeper. This is not new, the material is old and there are several books on the subject, each one has its own merits and flaws, what makes this one stand apart is that it proposes the system which can be inferred but so far never clearly explained. As an example: when you first read about the invoking hexagram of Mercury you think "I can use this to do an invocation of the energies of Mercury"; but then, if you are a beginner in Magic, you begin to have a lot of doubts, "should I include banishing ritual of the pentagram at the beginning? Should I use banishing hexagram of Mercury after the ritual and before the pentagram or after?" It may look simple, but fear and doubt are usually the first obstacles you find when trying to do something on your own. This book covers the subject and does not leave anything to chance; you get the diagrams for each figure as well as the order and when to trace them.A second omission from the authors is the lack of mention of talisman consecration, of course it can be inferred that you could consecrate a talisman as part of the process of invocation, but it is never mentioned and it is one of the biggest applications of planetary work, of course the author's statement of "ongoing devotions, and more low-key consecrations and attunements" as their intent is an easy explanation of why not include it.So, in resume, if you are new to magic and are working into the GD system this will be a welcome addition to your library. If you want to learn planetary magic out of that context this may not be the best book for you since only a 20% of the information could work as frame for implementing your rituals.

The presentation of the information is wonderful. The authors know their subject and it shows, the only thing I take issue with is that the early diagrams in the book are not rendered for Kindle. There are images later in the book which appear fine, but the diagrams are missing.

I gave a 2 star not because of its lack of content but because it contains too much information. As a reference guide, I find it a great guide for practitioners into astrological magic. It'll be nice if the information is simplified for easy reading. It's been many months since I bought this book but I've not been inclined to read through the entire book.

What an amazing book!Anyone interested in Astrology from basic to advanced students, you will find this book full of information. There's a chapter on Electional Astrology which defines the rules. The appendix is packed full of information normallyfound in ancient books such as Bonatti, Abu Ma'shar etc. but in modern day language. The bonus of the rituals is that the concept is internalised so that it becomes a personal experience and an enjoyable way to spend an hour. We are fortunate to have a traditionalist and translator, eager to share his knowledge.Samantha Bakewell

This book makes astrology come alive in graceful ritual. If you're interested in astrology, and would like to use that information for spiritual growth, this is the book for you. If you're a ritualist who would like to deepen your practice, then this is the book for you, too. The information provided is solid, and the ritual is remarkably beautiful and powerful...something that is rare to find in modern books of ritual. I highly recommend this book to a wide range of pratitioners, from astrologers and Hermetic magicians to Wiccans and witches who want to go deeper with their practice.

Even though Dr. Dykes is a stellar Islamic astrologer, like Achilles he has a weakness in his armor, HE DOESN'T KNOW ISLAMIC MAGIC! This is a FAR cry from the practice of ruhaniyya a.k.a. simiyya, which is the theurgical system of ritual used by the ancient Arabic magi such as Al-Buni, Al- Ghazali, Thabit Ibn Qurra etc....

Listen, I'm not a fan of self help books. I've got nothing against them, they've just never been for me. I find myself rolling my eyes on the first page, even if the information is objectively valuable. This series is AMAZING. I started with the original Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, and branched out to the work version. I've had this book for ages now, and I have to tell you, implementing the tips in this book have changed my life at work drastically. I no longer spend precious time angry at the world, my coworkers, and my boss. I'm a more pleasant employee to be around and I smile more, making my 8 hours go faster. My yearly review was actually better this year after putting some of these pieces of advice into practice. Highly, HIGHLY recommend both this and the original version. They are life changers!

The book seems like it was rushed. My worst critique is that I think it was written on the tail end of the first "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" bestseller. A lot of real common sense advise that comes no where close to the insights from the original best seller. For instance, tip #14 Don't Sweat the Demanding Boss (which one could argue is the whole premise behind why someone would pick up this book) suggests to not take their behavior personally, observe how you contribute to the situation, and understand that every person has a good side to them. Crappy advise like that is peppered all over this edition. During several "strategies" Dr. Carlson plainly reveals that he is writing the strategy while in route to a different city or during a two hour flight from "San Diego to San Francisco." I think he wrote this book very sheepishly to ride on the coattail of the "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" original bestseller.

I was poised to leave my current job, I already had given my notice. I was completely fed up with the job. Then I spotted this book at the local Barnes and Noble. I decided to skim it. Then, I couldn't put it down. I must have sat for more than an hour skimming it. This is not a long book. So, I read a substantial part of it. The next day, I told my boss that I was staying. After that, I bought the book from Amazon. This book helped me realize that I had been sweating the small stuff. I don't want to make it sound like the change was like flipping a switch. After all, a switch once flipped on can easily be flipped off (e.g. Seinfeld's "Serenity Now"). What meaningful change is ever easy? I know about meaningful changes. I used to weigh 200 pounds. Now, I'm fit and trim. I exercise every day. I have kept the weight off for ten years now.Changes are "grindingly difficult" (to borrow a phrase). This book may help you tip the balance in the right direction.

I really enjoy this book. I was having trouble with my new job and this book pointed many struggles that I was facing. It made me realized that I was not alone in feeling the things I was feeling. I definitely recommend this book if you are struggling with your position at work.

I think too many people in the psychology profession are snobby when it comes to analyzing social science works adored by the general public. If the books or writers become too successful then they are dismissed as being "pop." This certainly has been the case with my peers in regards to the Dr. Richard Carlson "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" series. They could not be more wrong, however. This particular offering is a monograph of considerable value. Other than this primer, I had only read the original, "...and it's all small stuff", edition. I found that, while the majority of his observations might not strike one as pure genius, they are steeped in common sense and are quite insightful. The theme here is "you be the adult." Even if your co-workers are acting like a bunch of ignorant sixth graders, you must rise above it. You're better than that. You'll forgive, work, and move on. Office politics is a fleeting and shallow endeavor. Keep your eyes on what you want in life. Many of those around you will be forgotten in a few years time and there's no reason to obsess over their opinions. They don't matter and, while you should be as kind and friendly as is possible, your long-term goals and aspirations are what counts. With annoying and dominant co-workers, when you lose your temper you tranfer power to them and give them the satisfaction that they have been looking for. Being above the frey is the last thing they want, but that's exactly where you should be.One of my favorite things that Dr. Carlson argues is that being relaxed and comfortable is essential to job performance and productivity. Further, there is nothing lazy or shameful about being in a good mood while on the clock. Do you help the company or institution by walking around like a grump so people have to proofread continuously what they're about to say to you? Certainly not. The wisdom is this book is not complex but it's not something that you will automatically figure out on your own.Don't Sweat the Small Stuff at Work is written in the same style as his other texts. It is extremely reader friendly as it is small and fits into a coat pocket. There are 284 pages which are efficiently broke up into 100 chapters. It won't take long to read, but, if you're like me and have had lots of difficulties dealing with the emotional baggage of others during your career, you will savor it for a long while. Dr. Carlson did us a great service by examining this subject.

Really love this book. Recommend to anyone that working , teach you how to work and handle work situations .Give you ideas and advice how to be a Success at work read this book and apply the tips.

Mister & Ms know it all giving you a hard time? The Boss is up your assets?Don't sweat the small stuff at work. This book puts a spinon those people. Minimize your stress with the answersto conflict by leaving the bad energy behind and move onwith getting your job done and well.Put it all in perspective. Shake the haters off and becomemore ""performance driven"", move up the ladder and drop the baggage !!

From School Library Journal

Grade 4 Up-Including both fiction and nonfiction, some popular titles and some less well known, Marcus has created a fascinating array of walking tours of New York City. The scope of this project is huge, and while not every literary landmark has been included, the author hits highlights in many of the neighborhoods of the city. Touring through each section, Marcus introduces history, characters, authors, anecdotes, quotes, and often parts of the specific stories from children's books. There are also maps and many illustrations from the books featured. Aficionados of children's literature will enjoy this title, as will city children and their families, or visitors familiar with these famous scenes and stories. This guide can be used as a resource while touring specific locations, or as an interesting history, and can be an armchair tour if preferred. Historical background on authors, illustrators, and publishing helps tie the books into the history of the city, and a bibliography of children's books set in New York City is included. Don't come to town without this handy guide.JoAnn Jonas, Chula Vista Public Library, San Diego, CACopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

We recently returned from a visit to Manhattan, having used this guide (along with several others); we found it enjoyable and useful. There are eleven tours: Lower Manhattan, Greenwich Village/East Village/SoHo, Flatiron District/Gramercy Park/Chelsea, Midtown Manhattan, Central Park/Upper East Side, Central Park/Upper West Side, Harlem/Northern Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island; each tour includes a map of the tour, an introduction, readable text concerning authors, book settings and the history of New York City, small pictures and line drawings, and lists of additional authors connected to each area. There is no information about amenities along the way (restaurants, bathrooms, playgrounds). We found a wealth of information and many literary references -- it would be smart to read this ahead of time so you can select and read some of the referenced books before your trip.

My daughter and I only received this book a day before our trip to New York City, what we did is look through the book after each day of exploring the city and go over what we saw and then went out and bought books that sounded interesting to her about those places. Great resource it's a shame it's out of print.

We used this book on our family trip to New York - Mom, Dad, and children ages 15, 13, 10, and 6. It was very easy to use and was a great companion as we toured the city on foot. Before we went, we read some of the books mentioned in "Storied City." Highly recommended if you are a family of book lovers.

Leonard Marcus hit upon a great idea and developed it perfectly. As a teacher, it is difficult to teach history or literature to the young and make the readings come to life. "Storied City: A Children's Book Guide to New York City", besides being a charming idea, is also a handy tool for parents and teachers. With this extremely convenient guide, you can walk the kids through the neighborhoods they've read about and enliven their reading experience. And, most importantly, Marcus writes in a way that doesn't talk down to children, and that's a tremendous asset.

With clarity and affection born of familiarity and delight, Marcus covers over 200 places and spaces in New York that have made an appearance in books for children and teenagers. He tells you how to get there and what you will see when you do. It is a lovely size, easy to carry and to hold, and it will take you on a virtual journey even if you and your children can't do a real one.
