I think this an excellent book for anyone exploring interviewing as a method for social science research. Seidman synthesized the full process of interviewing within the research process in a relatively easy read. Please note this book focuses on in-depth phenomenological interviewing. In other words, the book focuses on interviewing as a method to research the experience of individuals. Regardless of that focus, I think this is a good book to cover various issues around interviewing (even for ethnographic, case study, or grounded theory research). A key benefit of this book is that Seidman synthesizes key references for the various issues an interviewer needs to consider. These include ethical, data collection, gender, or racial considerations. In short, Seidman introduces the reader to the three interview series through which a research conducts three separate interviews of the same participant. Each interview is 90 minutes. The first interview covers the life history of the participant. The second concentrates on the current details of the participant's experience. The third interview covers the meaning of the experiences to the participants. Seidman recommends taking 2 to 3 weeks to interview each individual; the three interviews should be spaced between 3 days to a week apart

This is a good reference for novice qualitative researchers, especially if you are using phenomenological research methods. The section on phenomenological research interviews was especially important for my dissertation. It gives instructions on how interviews should be schedule in conjunction with maintaining the structure of the 3-cycle interview process. As a co-read, I recommend Doing Qualitative Research Differently (Holloway & Jefferson).

Easy read- approachable to the doctoral learner who is struggling with IRB issues or their own methodology and data analysis for qualitative research. Ethical contributions were made and discussed using Mr. Seidman's own experience with teaching and mentoring learners. Excellent- should be required reading for anyone doing qualitative research in the social sciences including the medical field- Excellent, excellent, excellent

This book provides a skeleton of qualitative interviewing and fills in many of the important details. I think it is a particularly useful text for new researchers who are developing their own standards and procedures. Perhaps most valuable is Seidman's familiarity with the literature about qualitative interviewing; reading this text gave me several credible referrals to other relevant-if not essential-texts. This book is a good starting point, but certainly not the end, for learning how to conduct qualitative research interviews.I appreciate Seidman's conversational tone, candor, and wisdom gained from years as a researcher.What frustrates me a bit about the book is its title. Nowhere on the front cover is "in-depth" or "phenomenological" interviewing mentioned; however, that specific methodology is the clear focus of this text. At the same time, as Seidman points out, nearly all of the principles discussed in this book are relevant to the broader method of interviewing.Overall, a useful and comprehensive introduction to interviewing.

I read this book during grad school. I used this book when it was time to write my dissertation. I highly recommend this text for those who need to build their libraries while learning to do qualitative research.

I used this book to help my students prepare their qualitative research design fir their AP Research papers. The sections on informed consent and ethical research were well received.

I bought this for my kids. My oldest is nine and his brother is about to turn eight. At first I thought some of the satire might be a bit over their heads. And in some cases, it is. But overall, they love it. They enjoy the humor and the imagination. They laugh and tell us (their parents) about Calvin's antics over and over. They want to play Calvin Ball and make their own snowman house of horrors.I will say, the Kindle version (Only works in the app or on a fire tablet) is stunning. It is easy to navigate and crystal clear. Very well done. Get this for your kids. Let them read and learn to use their imagination. Put that tablet to good use.

Calvin and Hobbes is one of those stories that latches itself upon the imagination. It goes beyond the wit and appearance of the normal comic strip and projects a level of conscientiousness that hasn't been seen since Bill Watterson discontinued the strip in 1995. As an artist, I would say Watterson has probably done more for the arts than most people realize. The Tenth Anniversary Book certainly contains the high-points of one of the greatest artisans of comics and story-telling of the Twentieth Century. Thank you, Mr. Watterson, for one of the greatest pieces of art I have ever observed.

My 10 and 14 year old sons LOVE reading this and another Calvin and Hobbes book that we have every single night before bed. It is so fun to hear their giggles coming from the other room. I remember reading it when I was their age, so I love seeing the joy of these classic comics being passed on to another generation!

Odds are if you are thinking about buying this book then you are a Calvin and Hobbes already. But for those who have not discovered the joy that is Calvin and Hobbes I would encourage you to pick one of these up and enjoy a work that transcends "the funny papers" and could truly be described as art. These stories and characters offer commentary, insight, wit, and quite often elicit emotion from the reader. They have a depth and soul not found in other comic strips.

I love C&H so no hate there.I bought all three (Essential, Indispensable, and Authoritative) for my Kindle-on-iPad. The strips are clear enough and I do enjoy them, but they do not fill the iPad screen and, amazingly, you CANNOT adjust the reader to eliminate the useless letter-boxing on all four sides. I have at least a one inch border on all four sides of the screen, wasting considerable screen space. As a result, the art and fonts are small and unnecessarily difficult to read.I don't regret my purchase and I do love C&H and having it on my Kindle (iPad). But the porting to Kindle was poorly done and detracts from what should and could have been a 5 star experience.

Seriously - how could you NOT love Calvin & Hobbes. My 7 year old is now reading Calvin & Hobbes, and it's the greatest thing ever. He may not get all the humor, but as a boy who has a beloved monkey he connects with Calvin's attachment with Hobbes on a very personal level. For me it's like going back to my high school and college years and rereading a loved cartoon.

I Have Always ♡LOVE♡ *Calvin And Hobbes....And, This Book Has Alot of *Interesting* Comments from The Cartoonist Who Drew Them. It Does Have "Calvin& Hobbes" Cartoons, too-So, that's Good. It's A Different kind of Book, for Sure. But, Definitely Worth *CHECKING OUT*!!!! :-)

To give this book of wonderful stories of a boy and his stuffed tiger anything less than a 5 would be sacrilegious. Being born in the early 80's I was at a perfect age to go to bed as a young boy reading these great comics. I feel Calvin and Hobbes changed the wayI look at the world, Instead of watching tv all day as a youngster I did the things Calvin did. I dug for treasure in my backyard, I went for wagon rides down steep hills in the woods, I played every day in the snow and made tons of snowmen in front of my dads car.I have come to realize that Calvin and Hobbes is not just a funny comic strip for a quick laugh, its so much more than that. Its looking at the world through different eyes and changing your perspective. Overall Calvin has changed me and I will never be the same.If you have never gone through a Calvin and Hobbes book please do and you will come to love this boy and his tiger.

This has got to be one of the funniest books we've read in a long time - Itzler has a great talent for making witty observations and describing tough situations in a completely novel way. At times we found outselves laughing out loud from his descriptions. By the time the reader reaches the final pages of this very entertaining book, the reader will have developed a fond affection for Itzler, his family and his mysterious SEAL trainer who overtakes his life for a month and demands nothing but 200% effort! Take advantage of the lessons that Itzler points out that he's learned at the end of his training sessions without having to go through a grueling 30-day training course yourself!

Early in my reading of Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods," I found myself thinking, "I should walk the Appalachian Trail!" A few chapters later, after learning of Bryson's hiking, sweating, and chafing experience, all I could think was, "Screw that. I'll stay indoors, thank you very much."I had a similar experience reading Jesse Itzler's informative, inspiring and hilarious fitness memoir, "Living with a SEAL."Itzler is a compulsively motivated human being who has achieved crazy success in entertainment, business, and fitness (to say nothing of marriage) by doing things others haven't thought of, view as contrarian or consider bat-shit insane. (is "bat-shit" hyphenated?)In LWaS, Jesse recounts the intense, month-long training hell he brought on himself by inviting a real-life Navy SEAL to live with him and his family. Early in the book I was thinking, "...maybe I should turn up the heat on my workouts and push the limits of my mind and body." Then I read about Jesse's torn muscles, hypothermia and bloody nuts (yes, those kind of nuts), and thought, "naaahhh."Indeed, Jesse holds back none of the grueling details involved in training with one of the world's most elite warriors and the marital complexities that arise when you host him in your family's apartment.Like SEAL, Jesse has one speed: 110% x 24 x 7. He's also a little bat-shit insane and a really funny writer. If you're into fitness and/or crazy people, you'll love Living with a SEAL.

First, the negative. I'm not crazy about Itzler's writing style. He tries too hard to be funny and a lot of the attempted humor doesn't work for me. But here is what I DO like about Itzler's perspective in this book: like the rest of us, Jesse is clearly, joyfully in awe of David Goggins.I'm a pretty crappy long distance runner, and when I first heard of Goggins I found it impossible to process his list of achievements. This guy makes the runners I know and admire seem as inept as I am. Reading his list of accomplishments is more like reading about a super hero than about an athlete. After a while it all runs together, just one jaw dropper after another. Any mere mortal would probably spend the rest of his life crowing about it if he had done even one of the things Goggins has done. Instead of bragging, David Goggins just moves on to the next challenge and crushed it (usually as part of a fundraising benefit for good causes).It is hard to conceive of anyone having this combination of strength, confidence, endurance, and patience.The book does humanize Goggins. He does share some of the flaws of lesser men. He is profane, he can be moody and unfriendly, and he carries a darkness wirh him. This isn't Superman. This is a human being, like anyone else, who just happens to be capable of super feats.On his Instagram page, David has made reference to a book he is writing. I'll buy it the day it is published. In the meantime, this book will do. Jesse Itzler is a David Goggins fan, like many of us. He just happens to be a fan who's life was transformed over a month he spent with the SEAL himself. The book is imperfect, but anyone who admires David Goggins should read it.

I've been working a lot on "mindset" this year. My biggest takeaway was the idea that when you think you're done, you're not. I've applied this philosophy to my workouts and have been striving to do 40% more reps, reminding myself that although I may feel done physically, that's just my mind telling me to stop. It works! This book is hilarious, but beware the bad language. I didn't realize my daughter was looking over my shoulder and I heard "mommy, is that book real?" Me: Yes. "Mommy, what's a motherf***er?"

After reading David Goggins' book (the SEAL who is talked about in this book), this book is very irritating. Calling David Goggins' "SEAL" for the whole story is frustrating. Also, after reading David Goggins' book and listening to him speak on podcasts, some of the things the author quotes him saying and doing are absolutely not Goggins' style, which leads to me believe an ample amount of artistic license was used here. It was great to read about the author's insane fitness experiment though. It would have been just and cool without the exaggeration.

I loved this book! Read it in less than 2 days then bought a copy for my brother-in-law. I've read my fair share of self-help, improve yourself books... but this one got me to take action. Seriously... around chapter 4 I put the book down and went for a 4 mile run. That may not seem like a big deal, but I hadn't been out for a run in well over a year!My take away from the book - "What you think you're capable of is actually only about 40% of what you are truly capable of" (paraphrasing).

This is a BEAUTIFUL quilt book, made unique by the travel theme of the author's favorite locations in the southwest. The blue sky photos, personal memories and area info are interesting and shows off the inspiration behind each quilt. The quilt designs are made mainly with simple, repeating shapes on a large scale with small color palettes. This is not a negative in any way, as it makes for bold, eye catching quilts that stitch up quickly. The instructions are clear and easily understood, and several of the projects could be a first quilt for a beginner. These are quilts I'd be proud to own or gift. This book still hasn't made it to the bookshelf at my house yet, because I keep picking it up to enjoy the sunny vacation feeling I get each time I flip through. Highly recommended, even if you already have a large library of quilting books.

A very inspiring set of quilt patterns and colors that go beyond the current cliche of "modern quilting". The designs are simple but because of that, accuracy is important. Minor misalignments will show so I'd suggest having at least an intermediate skill level at cutting and piecing (including paper piecing) if you expect to produce the same quality as the author. Much of the beauty of the quilts is in the quilting itself which is left up to the maker. I would have appreciated some ideas on how to scale up or expand any pattern with more blocks to make larger quilts if desired, but I think I can figure that out myself. I did like all the imagery and landscape photos. While full photos of each quilt would have been nice, there are at least drawings of each completed quilt. References are provided for where to get the solids used in all these quilts, but dyers might be inspired to make their own colors!

This book is eye candy! I love the color schemes, alternate color schemes suggestions, simplicity of the patterns and quilting. It has a calming effect on me, and are quilts that can be completed rather quickly. I do wish that some of the quilts were photographed as the whole top, some are just partial photos. I had to go on the internet to find a complete picture of the Macho Canyon quilt, one of my favorites. I want to make most of the quilts or variations of that Kristi has created for this book...a real keeper for me!

Beautiful, inspirational and well written! After receiving the book I made two quilts right away and I can't wait to make more! The patterns are modern and full of color. I highly recommend it, and it's appropriate for all skill levels.

AMAZING book. Love the travel-influenced concept. I visit quilt shops whenever I travel to purchase fabric inspired by my surroundings and then create or use a pattern that continues the vibe. The Southwest is one of my favorite places to explore and Schroeder, for me at least, meaningfully captures it’s spirit, mood, landscape, and historical value in her design elements and color choices. The book has easy to follow directions and projects for quilters of all skill levels. I just need to become more adept at piecing half-rectangle triangles to make the quilts in this book that I love most.

Super book. Great photos, easy to follow patterns, and I have plans to do most of the quilts in this book. Great addition to my library.

I was disheartened to read in the Preface to "Teaming with Microbes: A Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web" that the first part of the book would be difficult to get through. I pressed on. Very science-y. An excellent sleep inducer. No joke. I did fall asleep while reading it one warm afternoon. But it was definitely worth it. Like the authors, I urge you to read the entire book and not just the second part which is the heart of the book.Their argument boils down to one sentence: "No one ever fertilized an old-growth forest". Think about all the wild places you have ever seen, lush with growth. How did they get that way without the help of Scott's or Miracle-Gro? And if Scott's and Miracle-Gro are so superior, why don't our yards and gardens look better than those wild places?The authors' thesis is that we should garden like Nature gardens, working with the flora and fauna in the soils rather than against it through the use of compost, organic mulches and actively aerated compost tea. Best of all, they provide precise instructions and call for materials that most of us have on hand anyways. No need for expensive ingredients or equipment!I was thrilled to discover that I am not a "lazy composter" as I have always thought. Instead, I practice cold composting (not turning the compost), a method that produces the most "nutritious" compost! And what I jokingly refer to as "composting in situ", using the mower to shred up leaves and dumping them with the grass clippings onto my beds in the fall is actually a recommended mulch. As are the leaves I leave in my gardens over the winter. The only thing I am doing wrong is removing the leaves in the spring. And my deepest, darkest secret is nothing to be ashamed of. Instead of carefully working my compost into the soil, I just spread it on top. Again, a recommended method for amending the soil!Of course, there are things that I have to do differently. Such as leaving the leaves on my beds. And even though I don't roto-till, I should still stop "loosening" the soil in the spring when I plant my seeds. The soil should be disturbed as little as possible. Planting in individual holes or narrow furrows is fine. I should learn to make and use actively aerated compost teas. Perhaps most importantly instead of throwing anything and everything into my composter, I should pay closer attention to the individual ingredients and their proportions, maybe go so far as to have different composters to make compost tailored to the needs of the various plants in my gardens.This is a wonderful book that I will be referring to again and again.

From the first page through the last, this book is interesting. All of the little gardening mysteries that plagued me for so long are finally revealed in this book. I've heard the phrase "fixing nitrogen" for so long but never had it explained to me in a way that convinced me it wasn't just mumbo jumbo. This book explains what that means and why it is so important. I question everyting until it makes perfect sense to me. This book really makes sense. Read the instructions on a bag of organic fertilizer and it often says something like scratch the fertilizer into the top inch of soil around the plant. I always questioned this, because I knew my plants roots went way deeper than one inch and very few of them resided in the top inch of soil. If the product is really water soluable then maybe it will eventually soak into the root zone but most aren't. This book explains that you're not really feeding your plant directly. You are feeding the microbes that reside in that top inch of soil and they interact with one another in many fascinating ways that end up feeding your plant. If you are a gardener with an inquisitive mind, you will love this book I promise. I think the author is also working on a second edition. I can't wait.

This book is awesome for truly explaining organic gardening - both how and why. It tells you how to have an almost fertilizer-free lawn using microbes in compost tea and compost, and how to encourage the right kind of microbes for your various plants through the use of different kinds of mulches. It explains each step in the soil food web, how to identify any holes in your soil food web, and different steps you can take to improve the health and variety of microbes in your yard and garden. I was surprised at some common gardening practices which are actually bad for your yard!!! It was an enjoyable read with lots of interesting pictures, and made absolutely clear the importance of healthy soil when growing plants, and how to achieve it naturally and easily.

This is a must have book, the soil food web is so forgotten when growing plants. I have been very successful using techniques from this book while growing all my veggies vegan organic.

This is a page-turner of a science lesson about dirt. It explains why throwing a bucket of worms on your crummy soil doesn't generally do much - that alive soil (read "healthy soil") contains bazillions of interconnected microbes, bugs, worms, and things we haven't yet discovered, working in concert to turn rocks and dead things into nutrients for plants. Most amazing to me: plant roots exude substances that attract what they need. As long as we supply a good smorgasbord for all the things living in our soil, and keep it moist, the details work themselves out. LOVED it. Did I mention that?

I've met Jeff personally and heard him speak at various shows. I love his message and think his book is a wonderful introduction to the biology that is naturally occurring in your own backyard. I've read the book a couple of times, and recommended it to all my friends. Getting ready to buy another copy right now!If you're interested in organic gardening or even just learning more about your soil and how the different bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and micro and macro arthropods work together in helping your plant grow, this is the book for you!

Great map.... waterproof, tear resistant. Easy to fold into whatever section you're traveling in.

Great map if you're a hiker, mushroom hunter! Me? I'm the latter and this'll be extremely helpful. Map is tear-proof so it can be abused to a degree.

For a broad overview of trails its fine, but the scale is far too small to be actually useful on a hike.

Excellent detailed and sturdy map to find hiking trails you did not notice before. The maps are pricey though.

Excellent for hiking durability.

I was very disappointed in that the trails this map shows for North Table Mesa Park near Golden are less than 10% of the trails that are actually there. They should be ashamed. Using the Sky Terrain Golden Evergreen map all of the trails actually there were shown on their map except the Cottonwood Trail which we were told was recently upgraded from a route to a trail. I also compared Trails Illustrated and Sky Terrain for the Lakewood area Hayden Green Mountain Park where I hike frequently. Here we have a similar story --- the Trials Illustrated has perhaps 20% less trails than the Sky Terrain. Note that I purchased both these maps about two years ago.
