I don't have children and didn't realize this was written for middle-school age readers, as I was captivated from the beginning. I picked it up on a whim and couldn't put it down! Although meant for YA, the story of two girls and their side-kick boy, Indy, are brought together on a magical quest to save the world. Before you think Harry Potter, know that this book is set in New York City, but layers on the discovery of magical powers with a dash of schoolgirl angst. The characters are well drawn, so you get a complete sense of their looks, their lives and their thoughts, but without the endless internal dialog that characterizes many YA novels. The story clips right along and has a clear plot line. Best of all, the story is actually resolved in the one book. Would love to read a sequel !
An excellent urban fantasy book for middle grade readers. The action is good, the plot well done, and the dialogue believable. No love triangles overpowering the plot. Others have mentioned the plot so I'll just say to go ahead and grab it and read. You'll be pleased as long as you love a good clean tale of magic and friendship. Well done!
Wonderful story. This is not what I usually read, but I was hooked from the beginning. I usually read stories with older characters with a mystery. This was a delightful change. My wife will read it next.
The Third Coin is written for middle-grade girls but don't let that stop you! I bought it for my niece...then couldn't put it down! The story takes place in New York City. Two 12-year-old girls -- from very different backgrounds -- meet and, at first, don't get along. The plot thickens as it becomes apparent they are both looking for a magical coin that has gone missing from the island of Avalon...lots of fun King Arthur references! A fortuneteller sends them on a mission to find the coin but, of course, it's no easy feat. They face an evil schoolteacher among other challenges -- while getting their homework done and managing middle school politics.What I really liked about this book was not just the fantasy/adventure plot but the spot-on description of how tough life can be for girls of this age -- especially if they don't fit "the mold". The characters are really well-developed (including the girls' charming, adorable male friend, Indy). The book is also funny...I laughed out loud at least a few times!I didn't give it 5 stars because I thought it was a touch too long -- but the fun and adventure more than make up for it.Kudos to Ms. Howard for writing such an engaging, exciting and well-crafted book!
If you liked Harry Potter and Indiana Jones, you're going to love this book. My teen grandaughter told me it was her new favorite, and I bought it just to be supportive. But once I started reading, I could hardly put it down. Fun, funny, inventive, with delightful characters and plot twists that will surprise you. Highly recommended.
Full of mystery and delightful characters. Howard's The Third Coin delves into the world of Avalon from modern times using three early teen characters and a lot of mysticism to tell a fast, exciting story of a search to prevent evil. By Award-Winning Author C. M. Huddleston
Good characters! This is a very good fantasy that's nicely grounded in the real world. Good for fifth grade & up.
I very much enjoyed this book I read it to my son he loved it also..I just had a minor thing that bothered me which was some of the grammar but I quickly got past it..I'm so hoping there is a second book in the works and due to come out soon I would love for this story to continue
