This book was mostly enjoyable; if you're interested in the trek, by all means read it end to end; if you're interested in Bhutan, perhaps start elsewhere and find your way here. I read it along with several others ahead of a trip there this fall. One of the challenges with travel books such as these is there are only so many themes to pull from ... having done a couple of eco-trips and homestays (none so fierce as the Snowman Trek!) I can't claim to be an expert but have a fair sense of what there is to pull from:1 - The trek / geography / experience itself: The book does a wonderful job here, telling the story of the trek with great detail and a good and evocative writing style. Very interesting (and very cool/impressive).2 - One's fellow travelers: Again, nicely done. Grange captures the spirit of traveling with a group and his band of trekkers is described in enough detail to build the story, but not so much as to be intrusive.3 - The locals one meets: Pretty good; obviously limited here as most of the time was spent hiking. I tend to be more interested in people than scenery so I might have liked more, but wouldn't hold this against the book.4 - Snippets of the local history / culture / politics to provide "backstory": We get a highly romanticized view of Bhutan with selective emphasis on the positive and overmuch time on the Buddhism. From other books it's a fascinating culture that has both its pro's and its dark sides - we see none of the latter here, or the complexity of the country.5 - Reflections on personal transformation associated with the travel: Probably the hardest to write, threading the narcissism line carefully (and following heavily trodden ground), and this is where the book stumbles (I hate to say this as the author has obviously opened up and shared experiences which were deeply meaningful to him). Overall these portions of the book feel like I would have enjoyed them much more, say, in my more angst-ridden 20s. They occur with enough frequency to be distracting and at times border on trite/naive. For the right audience at the right time, they'll probably resonate, but I wasn't that audience, and the storytelling mechanics here didn't converge to get me to connect or much care. A transformational story has to have a deeper connection to the "pre" state of the author as central character, and the book spends more time on nostalgic reminiscences of childhood than in describing a person whose transformation is emotionally engaging.I wouldn't let the last note discourage folks interested in the trek from reading - the reflective passages can be gotten by, and the rest of the tale is well written and worth reading.

I so wanted to enjoy this book - with its intriguing title, exotic setting and description of an adventure I am unlikely to ever enjoy - but sadly it all fell very, very flat. The author only describes the apparently extraordinary sights and locations in the most cursory terms. He leads us on to the Shangri La of Thanza - but never elaborates on or properly describes an apparently awesome place. There is just no sense of 'being there'. The book's style is that of a 'dear diary' and never rises to the promised/anticipated heights. Thank heavens for the photos, mostly provided by a professional photographer on the journey, as they provide some much needed filling where the words so frequently fail.A few significant annoyances as well - where does an American author get off blaming China (and China alone) for the global warming that is having a devastating impact on Bhutan? And more - there's patronising language regarding the Bhutanese people met on the trek, some very uncomfortable/creepy descriptions of local children and the juvenile purportedly-romantic encounters with another treker, Ingrid, were all highly cringe-worthy. Ingrid has my sympathy - come on Kev, grow up! It was unsurprising that it only took some rain to put Ingrid off consummating the 'planned' final meeting. Finally, the stilted 'conversations' which provide the background to geological wonders, history and Buddhist belief are both awkward and unrealistic. It's not a terrible book, there are many enjoyable parts, but it could have been so much better. A missed opportunity - but thankfully the photos provide some redemption.

Twenty-four days, half a million steps, 216 miles, eleven mountain passes (seven over 16,000 feet): how does a surfer-screenwriter hopeful from Orange County (albeit, as many, a transplant--from New Hampshire) push himself to his limits? Quests appear regularly (this is one of three recent accounts, for instance, I've found on this Snowman Trek alone). So, what distinguishes Grange's 2007 mission, as his subtitle explains, "Discovering Bhutan on the Toughest Trek in the World"?Unlike Mark Horrell, a veteran mountaineer in his diaries (exactly two autumns later, in 2009; see my Nov. 2012 review) "Yakking with the Thunder Dragon: Walking Bhutan's Epic Snowman Trek," Grange does not address his fellow trekkers or assume familiarity with the logistics and exertions of such an expedition. He takes the time, therefore, to tell us how difficult it is: more people have climbed Everest than finished the Snowman Trek, and of fewer than 120 who try each year, half finish. I remained hazy (as with Horrell) as to what preparations people make, given their ages and occupations, before spending $8000 on this excursion. I did wonder as with my reading of Horrell how tough a trek might claim that offers skilled porters, modern gear, lots of food, and beasts of burden despite the dangers of altitude sickness, weather, and weariness--but I did learn about the remote wonders and climates Grange and his eight companions, guided by natives, encounter. He's bent to finish what he could not on a previous trip. Sacred snowy Jholmohari, unclimbed home of a goddess, borders Tibet, and represents the first of the places that beckon Grange, unhappy at 33 with his life's direction. He vows to make it to Thanza in the Lunana, a Shangri-La in his fantasy if belied by its name as "The Dark Inner Region." and this shimmers as his fabled destination of wonder.Reality, unsurprisingly, intervenes by day three. "After lunch the mighty Himalayan range began to assert itself. The trees thinned, shrinking as if scared, and the soft rolling mountains transformed into immense ridges, rocky folds, and scree chutes. This change in the external environment was mirrored in me internally--my breath grew shallow, the pressure in my head increased, and the altitude popped in my ears like kettle corn." (76)Grange as this shows takes the time to alternate between his physical and mental struggle and that of his comrades, as well as the beauty they witness slowly unfold in the clouds or meadows. "Far down the misty trail below, my trekking companions looked like brightly colored confetti flakes with feet." (108) His interest in Buddhism, as well as a comely German woman, Ingrid, a day's march behind his team on her own trek, impels him to advance, and his eventual arrival at the holy glacial valley of Kephu reveals that Lunana, and soon Thanza, will appear."After lunch, we followed the river down the valley, crowned with sharp ridges that shot out of the earth like giant arrowheads. The trail meandered along, alternating between the open sunshine of the river and the shadowy enchantment of the mossy forest. It was is as if whoever had cut the winding trail was so enthralled with the surroundings that they couldn't decide which was prettier, woods or river, so they chose both. In the forest, birds sat unafraid on the branch and anytime my attention drifted inward and I'd get lost in thought, a waterfall crashing down sheer rocks would suddenly appear and catapult me back to the present moment. Waterfalls were the meditation bells of the Snowman Trek, they'd always suddenly sound and appear when you least expected it, pulling you out of your thoughts and waking you up to wonder once again." (214)I cite this at length to show the interplay of nature, spirituality, and attention to phrasing that at its best "Beneath Blossom Rain" evokes. Its title comes from Kevin Grange's wish to see rain and sun fall at the same moment, "metok-chharp" in Dzongkha, and what this descent of elusive grace connotes. I sense that while Grange may not be a "born writer," if any exist, that he crafts much of his story carefully and attentively. One shortcoming, as an earlier reviewer {'Harry'} here raised: Grange must halt his gait to insert conversations about religious, natural, or cultural topics that don't feel true to the actual moment, as they're aimed more at the reader than the fellow trekker. (As an aside, if he had as he shows studied up on Bhutan before his arrival, I doubt if he'd be as "shocked" by the phallic imagery adorning walls and houses as he makes himself out to be for the newcomer. He also discusses "polygamy" when he means "polyandry"--and this from a university press title?) As an aspiring screenwriter, he needs to recognize how difficult this exposition can be to carry off well. It does throw off the pace of the book, which works best when he focuses upon his own reactions to his trail actions. He shifts between his inner tension and his mental reverie, as he learns to take that phallocentric Divine Madman of Bhutan Drukpa Kunley's advice to heart: "whatever happens is the path of release." He applies the Buddhist idea that its teachings are like water that finds its own container, and he learns to adjust to the trail as he must his return to asphalt, a Thimphu house party, and trucks and airports--as if, he notes, he returned from war, so jarring is the initial jolt back into civilization. His tale fills with the joy of having your needs met (food, campsites, water) despite the drawbacks of the chilly, windy, snowy trail. He finds the clutter of his mind silent at times, enabling him to tune in to his own nature, free of distraction. Gradually, trekkers regress to a childhood adventure, complete with stalking deer, running horses, herding or fleeing yaks, wandering slopes, sipping Pabst--and in the author's case, reading Rilke's "Letters to a Young Poet" by flashlight under the sleeping bag's warmth at night in a tent and watching a girl's coming-of-age dance.Grange witnesses an old woman's demise, another girl's suffering, and the privations those in these hinterlands endure amidst yak herds and raw farms. He conveys literary and cultural references to bring readers unfamiliar with Bhutan into the contexts he elaborates. These sometimes call attention to themselves, but he does strive to reach out to the reader, to connect our understanding with his as it unfolds. It's not always as fluid as the passages I've included, but it's worthwhile alongside Jamie Zeppa's "Beyond the Sky and the Earth: A Journey into Bhutan" (see my May 2012 review) for a Westerner's attempt to make sense of the off-road expanses of this often romanticized realm.Grange tries to listen and watch those with whom he walks and those he meets. Peter McBride's photographs enhance at key moments the narrative, and this proves a welcome addition to any armchair or real traveler's shelf. As he notes near the end: "The backache of camping was a blessing; it gave me a key to the city of stars." (270)

Real Artists Don't Starve is a feel good book of anecdotes and research about artists of all stripes who have come to a point where they can make a living. It is not so much about the practical aspects (such as how to do it within specific industries or avenues to pursue) as it is anecdotal and inspirational. If you have read more than a few books/blogs about being an artist and making a living, particularly those of a more inspirational bent, you won't really find anything new here.Despite that, the way that the stories are told is nicely done. I enjoyed it and found it a light and quick read and will probably read it again at some point. It's one of those books that's better suited to someone who needs encouragement rather than practical instructions.

Jeff is a very likable guy. His writing, though, is pedestrian. He's neither a writer nor an artist. He is an author by virtue of having been published. Jeff is actually a most effective marketer of which the book is a prime example. "Real Artists . . ." reads like an extremely elongated sales page letter. His stories from history are tendentious and the details are only selectively accurate. Statistically, real artists have mostly lived in a state of economic want. A few stories to the contrary do not change the facts of history. The book was tortuous to read. It strongly reinforces the aphorism that no one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American people.

For anyone who is just discovering they have a creative passion to explore, this might be inspiring and informative. For those who have any experience in being a creative, it's a long and drawn out explaination of some principles that range from common sense to potentially eye opening. I think it would have been much better as a shorter 'steal like an artist' type handbook. The anecdotes were interesting but they weren't distilled down to their main points. The whole thing felt too long for what it is, it felt thinly spread. I found myself skipping through page after page to get the jist because it felt like there was a lot of filler. Genuinely wanted to like it, three stars for effort and acknowledgement that maybe I (a professional musician and artist manager) am not the target market. I couldn't get through it, read the first few chapters to completion and grew tired of the writing style causing me to flip through the rest. Advice to author is to work on saying what you want to say in less words and take the good that's sprinkled throughout this book and concentrate it down to be great. Overall, I walked away feeling this was an attempt at something the author didn't know because it wasn't said with clear succinct words, instead with filler and motivational speech.P.S. interesting marketing campaign, kudos on that

The aim of this book is to dispel the myth that real artists have to suffer for their art, to starve and emerge ennobled by the experience with some damn fine, pure art that will serve as a beautiful headstone to put on their early grave. Goins paints a compelling picture that through the ages the most successful artists - from Michelangelo to Elvis - haven't starved (obviously by definition - they were successful) and he identifies 12 principles the starving artist doesn't employ, that the thriving artist does. The 12 points, which he lists in the introduction, are:1. The starving artist believes you must be born an artist. The thriving artist knows you must become one.2. The starving artist strives to be original. The thriving artist steals from his influences.3. The starving artist believes he has enough talent. The thriving artist apprentices under a master.4. The starving artist is stubborn about everything. The thriving artist is stubborn about the right things.5. The starving artist waits to be noticed. The thriving artist cultivates patrons.6. The starving artist believes he can be creative anywhere. The thriving artist goes where creative work is already happening.7. The starving artist always works alone. The thriving artist collaborates with others.8. The starving artist does his work in private. The thriving artist practices in public.9. The starving artist works for free. The thriving artist always works for something.10. The starving artist sells out too soon. The thriving artist owns his own work.11. The starving artist masters one craft. The thriving artist masters many.12. The starving artist despises the need for money. The thriving artist makes money to make art. Each point then becomes a chapter that Goins fills with anecdotes to prove his case with Michelangelo as the archetype of the thriving artist. My only criticism of the book is you could say Goins is guilty of cherry picking examples to suit his argument, none of us are Michelangelo after all, but that would be missing the point, which is that good art and commerce co-exist and always have. The principles and examples he develops are good, and after finishing the book today, I can say it maps out a course worth following for any creative type who wants to do good work, as I hope to do, well into a ripe old age.

#26,113 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

It started off interestingly enough, but somewhere around the 65-70% mark I just wanted it to be over. It felt like a none stop series of chase scenes that always resulted in the heroine dropping her gun but ultimately escaping. Dialogue and action become forced as the author introduced more characters, most who's purpose was only to die within a few short paragraphs. It became particularly tedious when the group reached the supposed safe haven of Site R. The entire interaction with the military and ensuing battle was forced to the breaking point. Characters kept secrets/held back information for no reason other than to, I assume, create suspense or future narrative/dialogue. While the action was non stop, the plot failed to truly advance until the very end, and that end was massively anti-climactic. The editing was good. I don't recall any real typos of note. The author could do with some fact checking however. Propane tanks don't explode if you shoot them and Army Humvees definitely don't need to be on to lower the window. Windows in hummers are amazingly primitive.

Val has been on her own for the last 4 months since the Great Discovery turned the world upside down. She lives by her own rules of survival, avoiding the inhuman Raspers and trying her best to stay alive. When she encounters Adam, the only person she has seen in that time, she is instantly leery. Adam ends up saving her life, and Val has no choice but to give him a chance. But Adam has a secret, one that Val may not be able to forgive. Can the two of them stay alive long enough to find answers about the Great Discovery? In case I have not made it clear in my many reviews of dystopian books, I am a huge fan of this genre. I think I must have high expectations when it comes to my end of the world adventures and recently I have been disappointed in what I have read. This story did not let me down, I am happy to say. It was unique enough that I did not feel like I had read this exact story before, and there was plenty of action to keep me engaged. I blew through the story in about a day because it was a fast read due to the writing style, the action was well done and the twists were not things that I could predict. I also appreciated the dose of reality the author threw in, with real life survival scenarios and near death events where not everyone makes it out alive and at times it can be gory and gruesome. Oh and the creepiness factor was appreciated, especially when it comes to the black slime stuff and the “hive”.At times Val drove me insane. She reacts as if she is the boss at all times (and in every scenario), and sure she has been on her own doing ok for months, but still she is an inexperienced 16 year old girl. I do like that she had previous training on weapons from her SWAT team father, it made her survival more believable to me. But anyway, she had such an attitude and kinda sorta treated Adam awful that there were plenty of times that if I had been him I would have peaced out. She is called a “bitch” at one point, and if the shoe fits and all… Adam on the other hand was just so mellow, caring and intuitive at times, it was slightly unbelievable as a traumatized 16 year old boy. But whatever. Val was the main characters and had a very strong personality, that despite my issues with her attitude she was an interesting perspective.I was glad the truth behind the Great Discovery was addressed in this book instead of just adding to the huge pile of questions the ending gave me. I like the direction the story took and I am just as curious as Val is as to why she is wanted. I can’t wait to read more because there has to be at least one more book to finish the saga this book began.

This story is a breath of fresh air in the YA/Post apocalyptic genre. This is a story about a strong young teenager forced to learn to survive on her own. A young teenager who finds out she is not the only non-rasper alive. She has developed 3 rules to follow. #1 is "Trust No one". When she is confronted by Adam, also a non-rasper teenager, she starts to ignore her 3 rules and her life changes.Val and Adam join together and try to get to the safe zone Adam's father told him about. This is full of action, excitement, drama, perseverance, and survival. Just when you think you have the story figured out, Miss Groger injects a twist.I really enjoyed this book. Miss Gregor knows how to pull the reader in and captivate them. I really didn't want to put the book down. I read it during lunch at work, on the way home from work, and sitting in front of the television.

Finally--the new fiction series I've been waiting for! Since finishing The Hunger Games trilogy a few years ago, I've been searching for another fiction series to grab my attention, only to end up disappointed. The Colony has outperformed any fiction novel I've read in years. You're hooked right away from the very beginning and you don't want the ride to end! Thank you for "breaking my slump" and producing such a fantastic read--I'll be anticipating the arrival of the next novel in the series!!

I was hooked from the start. It has been a long time since I stayed up to 3 am because I could not put down a book. Engaging characters and fast paced story. Can not wait for the next book from Kathleen Groger.

This was a good story, but a huge premise of the book is this girl and her number rule of not trusting anyone. This rule is mentioned in nearly ever single chapter. What annoys me is that she has no reason to not trust people. She went three or four months not seeing a single human. Where does this trust issue come from? There were a couple of other things that weren't amazing, but for the most part this is a fun book to read.

**slight spoilers**The Colony reminded me of The Walking Dead. If they took a character from the show and made this their backstory (*up until they meet up with the adults), it would fit in perfectly. The raspers are different enough from the tv show that they give this book its unique flavor. The twist on how they came to be was unique. Val was a great character and you were with her to the end.

This is a great book to keep you on the edge of your seat. It's almost non-stop action that keeps you reading well into the morning hours. I loved the flow of the writing and the overall aspect of the book itself. Definitely a new take, one which has me getting the next book now.

If I had wasted any money on this I would want a refund. What a useless piece of writing. It's not that its bad, it's just a waste of time. A sales brochure, fold it up to balance a table would be putting it to good use, or for starting a fire. But for educational or real informational purposes forget it.This is the crap produced by the formula writers making a quick buck.Might be a synopsis of the description from a textbook on the subject, that fails to deliver any real information. On a flavour scale this would fail to reach a Vanilla rating. What it claims to deliver and what it delivers are two totally different things. What it promises on the cover "The Science of Happiness: Overcome Stress, Depression and Anxiety Using The Power of Music, Dance, Writing and Drawing" What it delivers are a lot of random descriptions in a semi-organized hierarchy, there is nothing here about actually using it, how to apply it. Basically a very poor quality sales brochure.

Sadly, I don't have time for a lengthy review, as this book truly deserves. I had downloaded it thinking it was a coloring book I could preview before making a decision to purchase a hard copy- I was wrong- and I'm *so* happy about that! For time I meant to use picking out a few coloring books, I stopped and read through this twice! The author is not long-winded, and gets to the point without unnecessary medical jargon that often makes these types of books less enjoyable to read (I hear that enough from my physicians, so I tend to enjoy conversational style writing; while this isn't written that informally, it's by no means a textbook). There's just the right amount of information provided as well; enough to explain the applicable 5 W's and how's, but just touching the surface. It's perfect to satisfy a basic curiosity or act as a jumping off point if you wanted to look up more. Truly, I wasn't expecting this in the first place, and then when I saw what it was I certainly didn't expect to learn anything I didn't already know or be impressed in any way... But I was dead wrong. So for anyone out there who uses any form of artistic therapy, be it coloring, music, dancing, I highly recommend this well written, thoughtfully researched book for a peek into the science behind why these things make you better. And if you aren't using these modalities, I recommend this book even more vigorously to you, so you might have a chance to seek the elusive happiness in your life.

I am very disappointed in the book which turned out to be a pamphlet... I already promised it as a gift to my niece so I'm reluctant to send it back... I'm disabled and can't send the book (pamphlet) back in a timely manner but like I said I am very disappointed!!! This purchase was not worth my money!!!

Love this book

Basic Information

This book told me what art therapy is all about in an easy way and I now ready to do the course on this subject as this is what I want to do for my work.

I thought I didn't order this book.

Redundant of other similar books and research. Some new viewpoints although a little disinteresting. Good for beginners wanting basic information.

This volume is a must-read for any person wanting to see how the Special Air Service handled a Communist insurgency in Dhofar province, Oman. The author is clear and concise, and gives the reader a perspective both informative and intriguing. By the book!

A film documentary on the war in Oman motivated my purchase of this book. It was enlightening to say the least. Britain should be very pleased with the outcome of their efforts in this country especially now with all the other revolutions taking place around Oman.Of course, as a Christian and student of the Holy Bible (KJV), we also received valuable background material on life in the Middle East. The Western mind has a hard time grasping the tribalism, etc. still prevalent in these eastern countries. In summary, my discovery of the War of 1966-1976 in Oman was enlightening. My Bible knowledge found a parallel with the customs of the people of Oman. My awareness of counter-revolutionary military tactics was enhanced, and my appreciation for the SAS was also heightened.Thank you for making this wonderful book available.Sincerely,Daniel G. Waters

A well-written, interesting account and a must for any student or practitioner of counter-insurgency warfare. This should be on every military officer's reading list.

When I left 22 SAS in 1971, it was to commence my very first tour of duty in N. Ireland. At that time, elements of that particular regiment were fighting a little-known, and barely covered in the UK press!, war in Muscat and Oman. As I stood at the barracks gates in Hereford waiting for my taxi, a dear friend who was one of a small number of Fijian members of the regiment turned up in an open desert Landrover and drove me to the station. It was his way of saying farewell. He was a giant of a man in more ways than one and, as he dropped me off en route to my first operational tour of duty, I was already aware that he would soon be back in Oman undertaking what was for him, just another! That man was Corporal Labalaba and the following year he died in heroic circumstances along with a colleague at Mirbat.Author Tony Jeapes joined the SAS in Malaya in 1958 and won an MC in Oman in 1959. He later commanded 22 SAS Regiment for which he earned the OBE. Next he commanded the British Airborne Brigade and later still was appointed Commander Land Forces in Northern Ireland in the rank of Major General. It was at that time that I actually met him and was able to introduce him to some of his old diving buddies from around the Province. By now it was 1990 and I was completing my 7th year of duty there. Oh, how little had changed in those long years! This work is a history of a campaign that, even now, is never mentioned on Remembrance Sunday when most vicars, priests and padres try to recall as many campaigns as possible - having already mentioned the two obligatory world wars. Muscat and Oman was a campaign which was ignored throughout its duration and forgotten just as soon as it was completed in spite of those lives lost. This is the first-hand account that needed to be written and I am so very pleased that, not only was it written, but it had been produced by one who understood the conflict as well as any man and that makes it a `must' for amateur and professional historians alike.NM
