Kimberlin, MD, FAAP is the Principal Investigator for the Collaborative Antiviral Study Group (CASG), an international network of pediatric academic medical centers that evaluates antiviral therapeutics in rare diseases with a large unmet medical need, including neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease, congenital Zika infection, neonatal and infantile influenza infection, and neonatal enteroviral sepsis syndrome. Studies conducted by the CASG have led to new drug indications and label changes for acyclovir, valganciclovir, and oseltamivir, and non-CASG studies conducted by Dr. Kimberlin also have led to label changes for valacyclovir.Dr. Kimberlin is Editor of the 2018 AAP Report of the Committee on Infectious Diseases (Red Book), and was the editor for the 2015 edition as well. Finally a map for a(ny) Latin American country that is both detailed and accurate! I've bought a whole set of country maps from different producers (Nat.Geographic, Borch, ITMB) and this one--from Nat.Geographic--is by far the best. It's huge -- but then, why would anyone want to use a small map?

used in country and worked great. Lots of good info.

This map is adequate if you intend to stay on the main paved or graded roads, but it shows roads that don't exist, and is misleading about others that are marginally passable. I strongly recommend using verified GPS maps for smartphones, tablets, or laptops for navigating the more remote parts of Bolivia.

I used this map when I was in Bolivia and it was very good.It is difficult to find an excellent map of Bolivia, this one had the major places and points correct, but was a little lacking on the minute details.The best maps for Bolivia I found before my trip was Google Maps on the internet.

Very nice map -- durable, clear, attractive. For my use a map with rediced scale would have been better since we were traveling in only a small part of Bolivia.

I bought this map for my backpacking trip in Bolivia but i hardly ended up using it at all. While the map is nice and large, the fact is that it is very much lacking in detail, so that apart from the major cities and the towns in-between it's not very useful. People don't realize that the northern half of Bolivia is basically uncharted amazon jungle, so i think the mapmakers made a mistake including the northern regions, since about half of the map is just jungle i.e not very useful.I will say this, however. The major roads on the map are pretty accurate. The map does a good job of predicting whether the road you will be driving on will be in terrible condition or decent condition, which is nice if you're on a road trip.

Lookong forward to using the map for exploring the backroads on a motorcycle. Have used many other Nat'l Geo maps and all have been excellent.

I disagree with the comments from others who trash this book. It isn't a great book but it is a very good one that is appropriately titled "101" because its an introduction to digital filmmaking. It includes most of the information you need to know to put an ultra low-budget digital feature together. The authors (wisely) avoided too many references to technical equipment or how to operate them because, as we all know, by the time the book is published, whatever technology they referred to would be outdated. If you're looking for a book that goes into production details like lighting, camera angles, setting up shots, and directing actors you won't find that in this book.On the other hand, the book has a lot of information about how to get started, how to set up a small production company, equipment you'll need, creating and working within a tight budget, planning and working within a production schedule, finding and auditioning actors and crew, sourcing equipment, post production, distribution, and a lot of other useful stuff. I recommend it as a good place for any aspiring indie filmmaker to start.

I bought this book thinking it would help in a film project utilizing a good camera and a few volunteers. Unfortunately it does not even have much to say about the possibilities of digital filmmaking, but rather gives a disorganized (how about some editing?) depiction of their experience in making two films. I am not sure they even used the digital format.... The true focus is how to produce a film with little budget, and little experience. Not a bad topic, but not what I was expecting from the title. Three stars for the appendix, the chapter on working with the crew, and budget.

I bought this book as a gift for a film student in 2001. Now, 12 years later, the book is outdated. So many advances have taken place that this book is a dinosaur. There are some basic themes in the book about how to save money and etc... that are universal, but I'm sure a newly published edition or book will cover those topics too. (and probably with newer ideas.)

This book was impressive not just for the depth of detail it gave - it's an intensely hands-on book filled with practical advice. What makes this book stand out from others I've read like it is the breadth of material covered - the entire filmmaking process. Beginning with a pep-talk to inspire you to take the plunge and just do it, you're then taken through the entire filmmaking process, through to distribution. One thing covered with great clarity is the business aspects, which are rarely discussed with any real honesty in other books.I would recommend this book just for the organizational advice alone.

A great introduction to Filming

Great book an very informative.

It is pretty dated, but the overall information is still very useful. The "....For Dummies" book has more practical info.

I bought this book together with "Rebel Without a Crew: Or How a 23-Year-Old Filmmaker With $7,000 Became a Hollywood Player" by Robest Rodriguez, and have to say that this book pales in comparisson to that book.I give it 3 stars for the effort and for the final chapter on movie distribution and the forms included in the appendix.I also feel RIPPED OFF because this book has NOTHING to do with digital filmmaking. They only vagelly mention digital technology. I think anyone who wants to make a quick buck can sue these guys for having such a missleading title for the book.

The author has written an excellent and praiseworthy book about the need for informal gathering places in the United States, where people who are unrelated can relate. He believes that if we are concerned for the future of our society, then we must look to the past at a time when America was filled with happy gathering places (cafes, bars, pubs, bookstores, etc.), which he refers to as “homes away from home.” The author makes a clear and convincing case that when the citizens of a community find places to spend pleasurable hours with one another for no specific or obvious purpose, that there IS actually a purpose to such associations. He laments the fact that those who are involved in urban growth and development in the United States have been somewhat hostile to the idea of an informal public life and are failing to provide suitable or sufficient gathering places for citizens. He believes that this has weakened our democracy and that because we are not interacting and getting together informally with each other, our individual lives are not as rich as were those who lived in the past. I agree with this one hundred percent.While I’m certainly not a conspiracy theorist over here, it doesn’t take a genius to discern that, for the most part, the United States has been taken over by a corporate oligarchy, and it is this oligarchy that has shaped our society into what it is (and isn’t) today. It is no accident that Americans are isolated from each other and that there are not many informal gathering places available to them. This corporate oligarchy does not want Americans interacting and communicating with each other; it simply wants them working and minding their own business. At night, this oligarchy wants Americans sitting by themselves on couches, with an open can of beer, watching programming which it gladly is willing to provide. If Americans start interacting with each other, they might get ideas, ideas about the destruction of their own civilization that is taking place right under their noses, ideas about a government that merely wears the trappings of democracy, but only represents corporate interests, not the interests of the people, and this is something that the oligarchy cannot have. This is what is behind the careful, deliberate planning, development, and cultivation of the isolated culture in which American citizens find themselves immersed. This is not something that happened overnight, and it certainly isn’t something that happened all by itself. It was deliberately planned. It is tragic that the overwhelming majority of American citizens cannot discern this and continue to allow themselves to play into the oligarchy’s hands.The sad thing is that even when Americans do decide to hit a coffee shop, they simply sit by themselves at a table with a laptop computer in front of them, and there is very little socializing going on. None, to be exact. I see this all of the time. I believe that much of our technology is getting in the way of our interacting with each other. This technology follows us into the coffee shops, so what is gained? I see people staring into screens wherever I go out in public, and this includes restaurants.Another thing which I believe is hindering stimulating interaction between American citizens is the fact that far too many Americans are not readers; they are watchers, i.e., television watchers. People who do not read good books are poor conversationalists. I have sat down with people who are television watchers, not readers, and trying to converse with such as these is absolutely agonizing. There is nothing to talk about except the latest television programs. But when I speak with other people who are readers, the conversation goes on for hours.This is a wonderful book, which is why I gave it a 5-star rating. But until some of these other issues get resolved, just having places for people to gather informally isn’t going to solve the problem. You can have the place. You can have the people. But we need to make other changes in our society so that when those people are gathered together in those places, they are “all there,” body, mind, and soul.Americans have changed. We are uncivil toward one another. We are rude, impolite, and inconsiderate. We are quick to judge, label, misunderstand, or take offense. We are politically correct. In this new American society which has been created, everything you say can and will be used against you. How can a person relax and be himself when there is so much pressure placed upon him not to say or do anything that will be misconstrued, misunderstood, or cause offense?I don’t enjoy being around people anymore because of the torture and agony it causes me. Long after an event is over, I will still be agonizing, saying to myself, “Was I wrong to say this? I wonder what So and So thinks of me? Did I give such and such an impression?” I never used to be paranoid. I used to be a popular, people-loving, outgoing, vivacious person who never stayed at home. It is the changes in our society which have done this to me. I find that in American society, I no longer feel comfortable in my own skin because the people whom I encounter are also uncomfortable in their own skins. Americans are always afraid. Nobody knows who they are or, if they do, they’re afraid to be that person. Everyone wants to conform. Everyone wants to fit in. If you dare to think independently and you refuse to embrace the herd mentality that is so prevalent in American society, you’re out. We no longer have healthy dialogues and interactions with one another. If you disagree with someone, or if someone disagrees with you, you get verbally attacked, judged, or written off. In the worst cases, you just might get shot. Whatever happened to the give and take of conversation? This is why I simply prefer to just stay home with a book. It’s a lot safer, and a whole lot more peaceful that way.So, to me, not having informal public places in which to gather is only PART of the problem. Even if those places were available, because of the changes which have taken place in the way Americans treat each other, I would still opt to stay home with my book.

Jane Jacobs (1992) in The Death and Life of Great American Cities described the challenges to peoples' sense of community derived from urban planning and design when little attention is paid to creating spaces for routine, informal human interaction. Why is it that Starbucks and the coffee shop in general has become a meeting and gathering place? Why is the local pub such a fun place to be, a place where I look forward to seeing my 'friends' loosely defined as those who hang out there most Friday nights?Oldenburg's The Great Good Place describes sociologically the role and importance of Third places - (places other than home or work) (p. xvii). Important qualities of third places:1) They are inclusive and local2) They create an environment in which everybody knows just about everybody3) They serve as ports of entry for visitors4) They offer a 'neutral ground' space for conversation, idea sharing, and the transmittal of social norms5) Create places for fun and enjoyment6) Create a sense of belonging and connectednessThis is a must read for anyone interested in belonging, community, and placemaking. I would also recommend this book for those interested in starting a restaurant or coffee shop, a gathering place, a community center, or church. Additional reading that might be helpful:Block, P. I liked the central idea of Third Places but don't feel like the author added enough interesting examples or insights to make the extra length of a book worthwhile. There's too many cliches about Irish pubs and Parisian coffeehouses and too many out-of-nowhere digs at cliches of California and yoga. The cumulative effect gives the impression of Third Places as refuges from overbearing bosses and nagging wives. I longed for a greater attention to detail and a look at unexpected venues that might be working as Third Plades.

The project of The Great Good Place is to demonstrate why public spaces-- particularly gathering spaces-- are essential to the health of the community. It is an interesting and attractive thesis-- one that will speak clearly to most of his intended audience. Who does not harbor a nostalgia (even if an inherited nostalgia) for the town pub or the "place where everybody knows your name"?Oldenburg does a good job building his case. He looks at characteristics and benefits of third places and then chooses examples from history and other cultures to illustrate the ideas.A friend of mine remarked that The Great Good Place was one good idea repeated over and over again for 300 page. Not entirely fair, but there is some truth to it. The book also suffers from being oversold. For instance, the publisher's subtitle implies that hair salons are part of the topics that are covered. In fact, they are barely even mentioned. I suppose that the publicity that this relatively academic text made it nearly irrestistible for the publishing house to try to spice things up for the average reader.Honestly, three stars might be the most fair rating for the book. In addition to what feels like some occasionally thin material, I feel that the author elides or ignores the potential negatives of his third places. All the same, I ended up rating it four stars because I generally agreed with his ideas. That agreement made me predisposed to enjoy it. So for me, the fourth star is because I found it pleasant to read.Recommended for people with an interest in the social value of public spaces.

This lovely hardcover book is lavishly illustrated in the manner of illuminated manuscripts; the pictures online don't do it justice. And, of course, the Prayer of St. Francis is a concise reminder of Jesus' message.

This is a nice book for teaching younger children about the life of Saint Francis -- well written and great illustrations

I just read this book with my children for the first time tonight. As usual with Demi's work, the pictures are gorgeous. The prose are very nice, but some of the historical detail could have been left for an appendix. This would have made the story flow more effectively. Nonetheless, it is a great story and a wonderful teaching tool for children of all ages. My six year old loves it and "gets it." My four year old wanted to switch books about half way through. Then when she noticed some of the pictures on later pages, she wanted to keep going. The pictures really do carry the story forward and set fire to the imagination--just what a good picture book should do.I would take some issue with the last line which states that Saint Francis of Assisi is the most popular saint after Christ. This is problematic for two main reasons. First of all, I do not think it is correct to classify Jesus as "a saint". Secondly, I do not think that it is factually correct. Even if one were to say that Francis of Assisi is the most popular Christian saint, I do not know that this would be correct. I think Saint Valentine might fit in that category, though admittedly for more secular reasons.My quibbles about the last line aside, this is a very nice book, beautifully illustrated, typeset and printed and would be a welcome addition to any household seeking to raise children of substance, from whatever tradition they may hail.

Lots of books have been written about Saint Francis. Before too long I received a printed copy of this book to review.St. Francis is a figure who has intrigued the masses for generations. This book is a beautiful rendering of his life story. The author/Illustrator does a great job at telling the story. The illustrations appear as if you are looking at a period/medieval time painting of the story which adds a level of authenticity.This book is a beautiful piece to give as gifts to young and old. With Christmas coming this would make a great item to add to your stockings for your family members who are interested in church history.Thanks to Wisdom Tales for providing a free copy so that I could give an honest evaluation.

Read on October 09, 2012Already this week we were reading The Song of Francis and I know from our future reading list that the author/illustrator Demi is one to look for, so I was eager when I saw a new Saint Francis of Assisi by Demi. This is my first experience with Demi and I can understand why so many people will recommend the artwork in these picture books. The colors are absolutely beautiful and the pages of this book are filled with details from the life as a boy through manhood and into death with the well known Saint Francis of Assisi.Reading through this book there were many details that I did not know about Saint Francis including that our modern day reenactments of the Nativity scene comes from his original idea to go back and focus on the humble beginnings of Christ. So many things can be learned from the pages of this book and it is a gorgeous way for our children to learn about such a historical figure in Christian history.I read this through an electronic galley, but I am positive in person it will only impress me more. Thanks to the Independent Book Publishers Association for loaning an electronic copy for review.

This is a beautiful book and I'm going to put in on my nine year old daughter's Kindle Fire and see what she thinks of it. However, from my perspective it spends a lot of time focusing on the miraculous in St. Francis' life and little focusing on his actual deeds and teaching. Still, most of what I just read on Wikipedia about St. Francis made it into the book.There are large drawings on each page, which are done in such a way as to appear to be framed artwork. While there is not a tremendous amount of writing on any page, the vocabulary is above that generally used in books for young children. At 60 pages I believe it is too long to be read aloud at a single sitting, however there are no chapter breaks or other logical stopping points. Therefore I would recommend it for kids in the 9-12 age group--old enough to read for themselves and to have the necessary vocabulary.I'd like to thank the publisher for making a review copy available via NetGalley.
