Money Without Matrimony: The Unmarried Couple's Guide to Financial Security

From Publishers Weekly

Unmarried couples account for more than 5.5 million households in the U.S., but most of them never take the time to plan for a secure financial future. Yet planning is especially important for these couples since, despite their rising number, they still haven't achieved the financial benefits afforded to those who choose to marry, such as health insurance and Social Security survivor benefits. Designed for both heterosexual and same-sex couples, this informative guide to financial planning stresses the importance of discussing individual and joint financial goals with your partner, regardless of how casual or permanent the relationship is. Garrett and Neiman explore a wide range of issues, including how to hammer out a co-parenting agreement and how to decide whether to share a bank account. The authors also encourage couples to start saving more money: "Less than 1 percent of all Americans will be able to retire at age 65 and maintain their same standard of living." Financial planning is often a tense and difficult topic for couples to discuss but, with its real life examples, tidy bulleted lists and a glossary of confusing terms, this book should help readers get the conversation started. Excellent book! I love the detailed written information and help me tremulously on just not mingling my assets-likemy money, banks and credit with my boyfriend. Keep everything separate-my money, household and credit, etc and so much more.I like my complete independence, freedom and my own self-efficiency. Yes, 21 century and 2018 for strong women.Thank you, Jean

The book is useful for an overview and has a lot of stories. However, I was hoping for a checklist or easy reference chart somewhere that would make putting the tips into practice easier. It's better than nothing, but you will still have a lot of work to do and you better take notes as you read the book.

A long overdue book, Money Without Matrimony discusses the myriad of financial considerations when two people are living together as a couple but are not married. In this situation there are many potential problems that can interfere with your planning for your future. The authors walk the reader down a solid pathway for financial advice by first examining why financial planning is important, determining goals and objectives, dealing with what assets belong to each person and which assets are jointly owned, dealing with insurance, taxes, estate planning, and retirement. And, of course, children raises another entirely different problem that needs to be examined in detail. The authors follow a well organized path that leads the reader from thinking about their goals through devising a total plan. The coverage is excellent and thorough and includes a discussion of such things as common-law marriage states and what to do about it. Other areas with surprises that are covered in detail include credit cards, life insurance, insurance proceeds, and inheritance. This is a complex field with many potential pitfalls and problems but also ripe with planning opportunities so that your wishes are met and assets protected. Money Without Matrimony is highly recommended for all unmarried couples.

As a consumer educator, I've heard many stories of people whose finances were ruined by a partner. Credit problems from a failed relationship are a common problem. Money Without Matrimony offers very sound and comprehensive advice for couples, and I can't recommend it highly enough. I had the opportunity to interview coauthor Debra Neiman on my Internet radio show, EverydayWealth Radio: Your Consumer Advocate, about the book (if you want to listen it's archived online at wsradio.com) and she clearly knows what she is talking about and takes a compassionate approach to what can sometimes be uncomfortable topics to discuss. This is a must-read for unmarried couples, and a great gift if you know someone in that situation.

Add this to your list for designing a life of cohabitation.

....if you have money to invest or a home. The authors maintain the idea that household funds should be split percentage-wise according to income, which is what I needed my partner to hear (rather than 50/50). You will still need legal advice to make everything kosher in your home state. In spite of the horror stories they do have some good and practical ideas.

Great book. very helpful

My significant other and I have haven?t taken the time to secure our financial future because of a hectic schedule, and frankly, have been intimidated by the process. When the 2000 Census was released, I found out that I was one of 11 million people living with an unmarried partner in the U.S. (including both same-sex and different-sex couples). While it?s nice to know I?m not alone, this book helped me understand how financial planning is especially important for unmarried couples. Unmarried couples do not have the same financial benefits afforded to those who choose to marry, such as health insurance and Social Security survivor benefits. What I love about this book is that the authors explore a wide range of issues, including how to work through a co-parenting agreement and how to decide whether to share a bank account. It?s super easy to use (if we can use it, anyone can!), and includes specific exercises which walked us through those details that I dreaded using simple tools such as bulleted lists, and a glossary of all of that confusing financial jargon. What an inexpensive investment for something that has helped us gain a very clear vision on our financial dreams, motivations, and blocks, in order to prepare my partner and I to plan for financial success.

The Invention of Sodomy in Christian Theology, did not disappoint me. What I expected was a conformation to what I've questioned in Christianity's condemnation of homosexuality. This book presents undeniable evidence that Early Church Fathers spoke of something other than homosexuality. This book does not address the sin of the Church but does present enough evidence as to present homosexuality as a scapegoat for the Church's sin. One can not read this book without wondering why someone has not yet written about the Church's gravest sin.

God is God.Since the beginning of Christian theology, God has revealed himself. We see a God that is loving; sometimes vengeful; soft, other times loud as thunder; merciful and yet also a seeker of justice. There are many places in the Bible that give us a glimpse of how God meets the needs of his people, in so-much that they see him as their God.Here is an example. The people of Israel were wandering in the desert on their way to the land God promised them and they grew thirsty. God told Moses in Exodus 17:6 “Behold I will stand there upon a rock in Horeb; and thou shall smote the rock and there shall come water out of it that the people may drink...”God told Moses to exercise an act of faith. And what was needed, was given. Years later the people grew thirsty again. Moses and Aaron went before God. This time was different. Moses was told to Speak to the rock and water would come forth. But Moses was upset.-Numbers20:10-1210. “And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock. And he said unto them, Hear now ye rebels.Must we fetch water out of this rock?11. And Moses raised up his hand and with his rod he struck the rock twice: and water came out abundantly. And the congregation drink, and their beasts also.12. And the Lord spake into Moses and Aaron. Because you believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.”God didn’t want Israel to see the thunder and lightning. He didn’t want them to see another rod hitting a rock. He didn’t want them to see the same thing they saw time and time again. He wanted to be “Sanctified” in the eyes of his children. Now why did the God of ALL heaven and earth want to be “Sanctified” in the eyes of his people? Look to the scripture. All Israel knew was a God of the Law, a God of the pillar of fire by night and a cloud by day. A God of the ground opening up and swollowing their brothers and sisters that turned against him. This time God wanted them to see that he’s not only the God of Power. He wanted them to know he was a God of LOVE.The law given by God to the people of that time had little to no room for error. And most of it ,not all, was to teach the people coming out of slavery how to behave; not like animals, but as how a prosperous God fearing people would. After all, God could have easily chose a different people. Well established like the Egyptians? But no. God was and still is a God who works in mysterious ways. He took a people that no one would want. Gave them a land and a name. For later out of these people ;numbered as the stars like his promise to Abraham. Gods son would be born. Then came Jesus, the Son of God many centuries later. Speaking on the mountain said in Matthew 5:17 “ Think not that I have come to destroy the Law or the prophets, I have come to Fulfill.”Fulfillment means.-to Achieve something desired, promised or predicted.God ,at this point in time thru his son Jesus ,Achieved the goal the past laws were set to attain. Because Jesus said he had come to fulfill. That includes ALL the Law; not just bits and pieces. When was the last time you needed to sacrifice a unblemished lamb or bullock for a particular sin of yours?Or sacrifices of unleavened bread or frankincense with fine grain? I would hope never. Not in our life time. Because that law of God like all those others in that time were for that time.Jesus, the Son of God, gave us only two commandments to follow.Matthew 22: 37-4037.“And Jesus said, Love the Lord God with all thy heart, with all thy soul ,and with all thy mind.38. This is the first and great commandment.39. And the second is like unto it. Love thy neighbor as thy self.40. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”The children of God were known in that day as the children of Israel. Now after Jesus came, God “Spoke to the ROCK of our salvation.” Told him to come die for us, his children, ALL the world, so God can be Sanctified in our eyes... God is God... he is limitless in what he can do. God speaks and gives all he has promised. In Romans Paul,(a Roman himself) says that “...men shall not lay with men. And woman with woman. “In Caesar’s time. The Romans would come home from a battle and throw lavish sexual parties.Paul saw this and saw the affliction and disease spreading because of it “... recompense of your error is due.”There was a reason for that comment at that time.Paul never once spoke against a Monogamous, God fearing relationship between two men or women, lovers of God ,that is likened unto the relationship of David and Jonathan. Which was not built by any law but built solely on love. David states in 1Samuel 18:3 that he “...loved Johnathan as much as his own soul.” Then as this relationship grew. He told johnathan in 2 Samuel 1:26 “...Very pleasant hast thou been unto me. Thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.”And remember David was the apple of Gods Eye.. Even when he was Loving a man.I implore you; use love and knowledge equally when using the word of God.Lest you be found striking the rock. When God wants you to see the sanctification of his love and power. With out limits. He says “be still and know that I am God”That’s what we need to do...Galatians says. 3:28 “There is neither Jew nor Greek, Bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for we are all ONE in Christ Jesus.”Go in peace. And judge not lest ye be judged.AmenThe book brought to mind they things are not always as they seem. Read with a open mind.Would like to see more:)

This book addresses some of the same terrain as John Boswell's 1980 book CHRISTIANITY, SOCIAL TOLERANCE, AND HOMOSEXUALITY, but with important points of contrast, one of which is it's half the earlier book's length in pages.Jordan takes a Christianized, quasi-Foucauldian approach to the subject, whereas Boswell's approach was essentialist, stressing historical continuities which Jordan opposes. Boswell equated the modern concept of homosexuality with the medieval concept of sodomy, whereas Jordan does not.Instead, Jordan argues that the term "sodomy," as used by early church fathers and pre-Renaissance theologians, was a usefully vague invective, employed not altogether differently from the ways "philistinism" was used later or, for that matter, the way "homophobia" is used in some circles today. But parallel to what Jordan says about the term "homophobia," "sodomy," too, has been used politically not as a precise explanation for human behavior, but as "a placeholder for an explanation yet to be provided" (167-68).[Arguably, as philosopher Judith Butler does argue elsewhere (cogently), the same could be said for the current uses of "gay," "homosexual," "queer," etc., or for that matter, "sex."]Jordan's book is an important one for people who identify themselves as either Christian or gay (--or both) because it addresses issues underlying the clash of values and "culture wars" being played out in society now. If indeed, as Jordan suggests, "sodomy" was invented to fill a gap left by Christendom's refusal of the "erotic"--even between two sexes, perhaps progress lies in our seeking a place for the erotic INSIDE the moral, instead of persisting in (often hypocritically) dichotomizing the two--something, in response to a previous reader's comments, Plato did NOT do (though the later Platonists did).

The writing and reasoning in this history of the medieval formation of Christian condemnation of the "nefarious sin" of "sodomy" are very crisp. My only complaint is that the book is too short (not examining the condemnation of "sodomites" in the first Christian millennium, or in Jewish or Islamic theology).Jordan shows how one after another Church Father produced incoherent condemnations of sodomy--monastic, clerical, and layman--in part out of concern for suggesting such a sin to those not aware of its possibility, in part not wanting to reveal the extent of its prevalence within the priesthood and monasteries. One striking feature is that this tradition/discourse only began more than a thousand years after Christ, who is not recorded as having condemned sodomy or sodomites.

"Advocacy scholarship" from start to finish. Nothing is included that does not fit the narrative.

I was surprised because, on the whole, this was a good story. I picked this up through Kindle Deal of the Day. I'm not too picky about the books on the list because they're usually good. I hadn't heard of this author but I love 'marriage of convenience' stories, especially Regency period. The h advertises for investors via posters put up at the docks (rolling my eyes here). The H is a penniless earl with a business venture he needs finance for. He sees the advert and appears at the h's estate in person. There is chemistry from the start but the H is very hesitant to get involved. After 2 days he agrees and they get married. The h wants to go to London to start a career as an interior designer with her aunt and uncle's business. She needs a respectable husband so that her mother (a widowed countess) agrees to her going to London. The deal is that the H will go to Barbados (or Barbadoes as per the author's note in the back of the book), to continue with the mining expedition that will restore his family's fortunes. The H returns suddenly after 5 months because his uncle is trying to start another coal mine on the H's estate. There are a lot more intricate details and there are secondary characters that I assume will get their own books. What let this book down was quite a few Americanisms, words like "passel" and "make due", but ultimately such a modern h was a bit jarring. The book didn't have a Regency feel. There was also a melodrama towards the very end that just got on my nerves. The h suggests an anulment on the same day that the H discovers that his brother has died upon returning to the family estate. I wanted to shake the h.Anyway, it's a good story if you can overlook all of the above.

I liked it. I'll probably give it a 3 on GR but on Amazon it's safely within the 4 range. The characters were well developed, though I liked the independent Willow (Wilhelmina) a little better than the more reserved Earl of Cassin. He improves over time, though, or perhaps he just grew on me. The sex scenes are good. They start a little late in the story, but I'd give it a heat rating of 3 out of 5. There is no cheating despite the marriage of convenience aspect, and the build up to love is well paced...The book is, overall, well written with very few errors. There is one minor pronoun disagreement ("please install the gentleman in my father's library. I will attend them shortly") and the use of the word "employee" instead of "employ (them).". She also incorrectly uses the word "literally" twice It is getting to be so common these days both in written form and speech, and it's probably better just to drop it altogether since it is more often incorrectly used and almost never adds anything of value.I didn't catch any anachronisms, and I liked the historical references to the bat-guano mining of that era and its practical application in agriculture. It was mentioned at one point that coal mining on the Earl of Cassin's land was dangerous in part due to the unpredictability of the tides, which I thought was weird since tides are actually quite predictable. I believe mine flooding is more related to hitting the water table than to the tides, but I'm being nitpicky.I did really like (and this may be slightly SPOILERISH) that the main characters were able to reach their HEA without the author creating unrealistic plot turns to make the story conform to the typical romance reader's expectations. The heroine's physical limitations didn't need resolving for the characters to have a fulfilling life together..All in all I thought it was an enjoyable read. I've already ordered (and look forward to reading) the next book in the series, which features Joseph Chance (from the Bachelor Lords of London series) and his bride of convenience Tessa.

I have to tell you all...Charis Michaels has come up with a romance concept that I simply could not put down, and I have the bleary eyes to prove it! It's an old-fashioned romance starring Lady Willow, a heroine with modern sensibilities who's the 1830s' answer to an interior designer. She's intent on snatching up a plum apprenticeship waiting for her in London - if only she can just find a way to get there! When her parents forbid it, Lady Willow takes out an ad to find a man who will marry her and then go his own way, leaving her to pursue her dream. Enter Lord Cassin - desperate for money and in short order, this wife-who-is-not-a-wife caper (and Lady Willow's hefty dowry) is the perfect solution. At first, Lord Cassin is an expected balance of reluctant and noble but my, how things evolve when he becomes totally bewitched by our heroine. After that turn of events, he’s downright hot. I loved the dialogue - it's laugh out loud funny and as good as any I've read. The ending? Ah, I'll never spill but rest assured it's happily-ever-after to the max. Can’t wait for book 2 in the Brides of Belgravia series!

The author started out with great enthusiasm and then suddenly stopped! Maybe she wants to continue writing about this family. I was very sad to be left after enjoying the plot with a sudden end to the romance. I think the writer was exhausted but I certainly was extremely disappointed as there was a great deal to sort out which was left unfinished. diana bermuda

Poetry for Young People: William Butler Yeats, by Jonathan Allison

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up-Yeats lived a rich, intellectual life and was very much involved in the events of his time. Born in Dublin, the son of a gifted professional family, he trained as a lawyer and also gained fame as a painter, a theatrical manager, and political figure. This collection reveals the poet's love for the landscapes and people of Ireland, especially of County Sligo. Strong themes of Celtic mysticism and the occult appear in several selections. Each poem is prefaced by a few lines that set the scene and is followed by an explanation of difficult words. Beautiful paintings, many full page, show landscapes, people, and animals referred to in the selections. An impressive introduction to this Nobel Prize winner.Libby K. From Booklist

Reviewed with books on Coleridge and Wordsworth in the Poetry for Young People series.Gr. 6-10. The editors of these handsome collections in the Poetry for Young People series have chosen well, bringing together about 20 of each great poet's most accessible, compelling poems, with selections that range from Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" to Wordsworth's "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" and Yeats' stark, dramatic "An Irish Airman Foresees His Death." The full-color paintings on each page are beautiful. Each volume begins with a helpful general biography and a critical introduction to the poet's work. On the page with each poem, brief editorial notes provide useful context and guidance (if only the notes were at the back of the book, so that the reader could first enjoy a poem free of commentary). In fact, the book design is a problem, especially in the Yeats book. Harrington's impressionistic art is lush and beautiful, evoking the Irish landscapes, fantasy worlds, and stormy emotions of the verse; but the large pictures leave no space for readers to imagine what the words suggest, and much of the type is hard to read because it's printed right on the dark, full-page paintings. In the Coleridge and Wordsworth collections there is a lot more white space, and the illustrations evoke each poet's world without totally overwhelming the verbal images. None of this classic poetry is easy reading, and all three books will work best for reading aloud and group discussion. Hazel RochmanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

We really enjoyed this book during our weekly poetry tea time! :-) It gave us interesting info on the poet and a good sampling of his work. It's definitely intended for older children. The biography pages read a bit like a textbook and it didn't really hold the attention of my little ones.

Love the story and the poetry and the illustrations. Great way to intro a poet.

Under bare Ben Bulben's head In Drumcliff churchyard Yeats is laid. An ancestor was rector there Long years ago, a church stands near, By the road an ancient cross. No marble, no conventional phrase; On limestone quarried near the spot By his command these words are cut:Cast a cold eye On life, on death. Horseman, pass by!

Beautiful illustrations!

Well, I can’t believe that I would be making the 2nd review of the Ray Lampe BGE book. I have been waiting for it to show up on my kindle for a number of weeks now. Disclaimer: I am a big fan of Ray and I do own a number of his grilling books. So, after taking a quick first pass through the book, it does give me some good ideas for my own Kamado Joe grill/smoker, --similar to the BGE. Looking forward to trying out some of the recipes this weekend, --that is if Hurricane Matthew gives me a break…… Yep, this book is not just for the BGE fans.

Got for my husband's Christmas present. He bought himself a Big Green Egg but then realized he didn't know what to cook on it. He uses this every time and as long as he follows the instructions and recipes to the letter everything turns out PERFECT!!!! Do not deviate from these instructions until you are a master, he worked out the science for you in advance. Great recipe book!

This cookbook is another hit. Personally read all the reviews and I have to say this is a cook book, not a how too book. Well it does show you how to cook great food. Trust me I have eaten enough of Ray's cooking to say it's always great. When people ask me what can you cook on a BGE my response is always the same "Anything you can cook in your oven only it will be better". The recipes in this book only proves that. Recipes within this book will be good from an oven, but they will be great cooked in a BGE.Don't be afraid to give this book a chance, you will not regret it.

great product great tips & recipes! Great Amazonian!

The Big Green Egg Cookbook. Is the best cookbook for the egg! Clearly the best too follow and read everyone that has a Egg and if you don’t have one you will want to read this one! The recipes are clear and precise!

Love this book and its has some wonderful menus

Got this for my brother as a gift. He seems to like it and uses it a lot. There are plenty of recipes to last you a while if you like to try new things.

It was too commercial and no where as good a cook book as one by the Pioneer Woman.

It was a birthday gift for someone who loves to cook and loves his Big Green cooker

I first became aware of Mr. Whicher from the firm series on Amazon. I then searched Amazon for books that preceded the film series and found this non-fiction work by Kate Summerscale. While there are sections with strong attention to detail that makes for a little slow reading, for the great majority of the book it reads like fiction and moves at a good pace. Well written and the film follows the book very closely. Enjoyable reading and a bit of history on the development of the detective role in England.

Summerscale offers up a murder mystery, and a famous detective, that proved to be the inspiration for many other murder stories, from Dickens to James. The heinous slaying of a young child, whose body was found stuffed in the privy. But the drama of the case proves not to be in any high-speed chase of the suspect, or any drawing room speech that identifies the killer. No, the real story here is about fame for a detective who wasn’t seeking it, who meets up with a case complicated with a complex family history and an incompetent local police force, a case that takes years to unfold and pushes a brilliant sleuth out of the public eye out of embarrassment. While the book itself sludges along at times, overladen with goodly research, Summerscale has pinpointed an intriguing story that shows us the problems of trying a case in 5he media, and also shows us the dying breaths of Victorian mores, as a new world of science and evidence encroaches on the world of old-fashioned know-how.

Detective Inspector Jonathan "Jake" Whicher (1 Oct 1814 - 29 June 1881) was one of the original eight members of the Detective Branch at the Scotland Yard established in 1842, he was also Charles Dickens's inspiration for Inspector Bucket. Reading this I was thrown back in time to when everything was new. Where social class gave you a pass for just about anything. Had that not been a factor this may have been solved quicker. Well Whicher did solve it he just couldn't prove it. I really liked how the author tied in these events and people to other works of literature. She also gave us old photos and news paper clipping.

This book gives a good clear account of the famous Constance Kent murder case that rocked England and mystified all in the middle of the nenteenth century. However, it does a good deal more than that, which some readers may find irritating, but which seemed to me interesting and the principal virtue of the book: 1) it shows how the case influenced the development of forensic science and detective work; 2) it shows how sensational details of the case worked their way into the literature of the time in the novels of Dickens and Collins and detective fiction which came after; 3) it follows the later life of all the major figures, bringing in new material not contained in classic accounts of the case; and 4) it presents a solution of the crime, which, if not entirely new, has not previously been given with such convincing details. In short it places the facts of a particular murder within the culture of the day and shows how it shifted values. The references are as complete and detailed as one could wish. Finally, the book is well-written and a pleasure to read.

Excellent non-fiction book. A creepy murder and weird family, and a detective that got it right!!! The book lays out the murder and the clues set in a fascinating time period. The author explains the rise of the position of detective. This a true crime book with the first detective and lets the reader follow the whole story to the very end. Loved reading about the later years of the family and the life of Jonathan Whicher - about all involved. Highly recommended!!!! This book deserves an A+++++++

In England in the early 1860s the detective, as profession and as fictional hero, was just coming into vogue. A series of sensational cases in the 1850s had captured the imagination of the British public, which, more literate than ever before, was enthralled by reports carried in an ever-increasing number of newspapers and magazines. Stories of fictional crime-solving heroics were provided by writers like Willkie Collins, further whetting the public appetite. Then, in the summer of 1860, a shocking murder took place. In a country house occupied by a wealthy family and its servants, a child was taken from its bed and brutally killed. Jonathan Whicher, one of the finest detectives of the day, was dispatched to solve the case. Mr. Whicher quickly narrowed his suspects down to one, and a huge furor broke out. Whicher was accused of jumping the gun, of publicity-seeking, and of an unseemly arrogance. His suspect was arrested, questioned, then released, and Whicher's career came to an end in disgrace shortly thereafter. Five years later, Whicher's suspect made a suprise confession, vindicating the detective after all.Kate Summerscale has done a marvelous job of recapturing the world in which these events took place, especially in identifying elements of this true crime which influenced the writers of detective and mystery fiction over the next many years, so that the theme of a crime which takes place in an isolated location with a limited number of potential suspects remains a staple of the genre to this day. She traces the protagonists' lives far and wide and into some surprising places. Most interestingly, she points out the many inconsistencies in the final confession and indicates that there was probably much more to the story than was ever publicly told.Mystery and true crime story fans will enjoy this book, as will historians, sociologists, and anyone who likes a good, solid conundrum.
