This has been a good book, but I hate when the author leads you on and never gives the ending just to sell another book. Why don't you just finish the book before you publish it. Now, after purchasing 2 books, I still have to wait for #3 or maybe #4 to see how it ends. After this series, I will not be purchasing any more new releases from Me. Maxwell.

I really did not enjoy reading I thought it was a rush written book it did not have a good ending it left with a cliffhanger not a very byGood read.

I think Karin Muller did as well as she could in Japan. It is not an easy culture to dive into without prior and extensive research. I have no idea how she prepared for her year long stay, but if she had done a thorough reading of Ruth Benedict's works, although very dated....she would have gleaned some important information about Japanese culture which doesn't seem to evolve much except in the size of the cities and the pace of life in those cities.I felt a lot of empathy with Muller concerning Mrs. Tanaka. I had a mother in law just like her. Vengeful, spiteful, backstabbing, but I also was an independent young woman who was facing great obstacles in that marriage. The father in law was very much like Mr. Tanaka, a lovely, generous man. Yes, Muller made some ridiculous decisions: tearing up the flower garden and planting vegetables and just not tending to them, not asking permission was unthinkable, and rude. A bit of an Ugly American. But the ridiculous lengths Mrs. Tanaka went to crush her guest in the end was just insane. Even by Japanese standards, it was ridiculous, vengeful. I think that Karin Muller gleans about as much as she could from her stay in Japan, and she did give a good analysis of the people she met, like the elderly women who were playing some sort of games. She made many mistakes, but so would most people visiting a culture so hidebound by tradition and rather misogynistic in certain ways. Overall I enjoyed this book and she is a good writer. I hope someday she will sum up these lessons and return to continue to try to explore Japan and the people, but this time, stay at a hotel. Don't tie yourself to a family where you are bound to have many conflicts because of the nature of both cultures.

The Good is she found WA, harmony in other people, like Adam and Roberto and others. She also touched on such subjects as Sumo Wrestling, Archery on Horse Back and Sword Polishing, which are very rarely talked about in many books by Non-Japanese visiting Japan. They focus on business methods and the water trade. And she did seem to get some insight in the Japanese culture, here and there. And she met a few people who were just plain friendly and happy to help her.The Bad is she seems to barely touch on each of the subjects, like a bee visiting flowers, she buzzes all over the place. I think the Judo Master who she met in the last chapter got her pinned down. Believe. Commit. I don't think she really committed to understanding WA, or anything else, because I don't think she believed in it. She moved about Japan like a bullet train on dope.The Ugly is the relationship she had with the Japanese family. I am not sure I would call her unmannered but she did a few things that felt rude. You DON'T take over a part of somebody else's garden without asking. Did she ask for permission to write about them in a book? Did she really think it was a good idea to sit under a target while mounted archeries shot at it?Did she really think, in the end, she truly understood WA? I think it is a wonderful book to read to understand how easy or how hard it is to get along with any culture. I think the bad reviews and good reviews are both right, they are just stressing different parts of the book. Hope that makes sense.

The author's Japanese Judo instructors had said that to truly master the sport, one has to understand the philosophy behind it. And to do that one needs to understand Japan. What better way to do it than to pack up one's bags and go live in Japan for a year? Karin Muller did just that. Her narrative covered her uneasy relationship with the Japanese family that hosted her, as well as various side trips to peel away the veneer that is modern Japan.Foreigners often find it hard to reconcile the conflict that is Japan. The country that gave the world Sony Walkman, the robotic dog Aibo and led the world comfortably in any number of high-tech, consumer electronic products, is also bounded by traditions.In my view, Karin's host family was, in many ways, a microcosm of Japanese society. The elder Genji was a president of a Japanese corporation awaiting retirement. While he's more than happy to treat this American Gaijin as his equal, someone whom he could discuss economics and world business with - something he'd never do with his wife, he also revelled in the traditonal role of a husband, being waited on hand and foot by his supremely conservative wife. Genji's 28 year-old daughter wanted to live life as she wanted it but was forced to attend match-making sessions by her panicking parents. Their son however, followed in his father footsteps with approving nods from both parents. He graduated from a prestigious Tokyo university and became a salaried man at Nissan. He's no doubt hoping that decades of loyal service would eventually land him the same prize his father received.This should have been an interesting read but i found myself skipping over parts of the books. One reason's entirely personal: i wasn't that interested in learning about the religious aspects of Japan. Hence her numerous journeys to Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples didn't resonate with me. I found snippets of her narration describing modern Japanese trying to come to terms with their parents' values and those concerning foreigners trying to make a living in Japan, far more interesting. Karin used present tense exclusively and her story felt somewhat disjointed. I thought past tense would have been much better. But it's just me.The book promised a "hilarious portrait of the land of Wa" but i didn't find much laugh-out-loud humor of the Bill Bryson variety. What you get is a straight-forward narration from the point of view of a westerner. I'd have given this book 3.5 stars if i could.

Interesting account of a year abroad in Japan. Explores cultural differences and family structure.

This is a well-written very informative book on an unusual culture from the point of view of an admirer. A fast easy read that will change ideas about Japan and the Japanese. People who have some experience in Judo will get more out of the book than the average person. Not expected to be this good.

First off, this deck is a HUGE bargain. You get both a unique, gorgeous set of cards, and a well-bound guide book for just $24. It's the perfect deck for animal lovers and/or beginners who want something different than the usual Tarot deck!The cards are matte, vibrant, and made of a sturdy cardstock material. The illustrations themselves are amazing and the artist definitely knows how to use colors in a minimalistic yet rich, dynamic way. Also, the deck & guide containers are sturdy too.I've added pictures of all of my favorite cards from the deck (they look better in real life, trust me).

I’ve been drawn to tarot so much lately that I felt an urge to learn how to use them. I’ve heard you should be gifted your deck, but I bought this for myself because it just spoke to me. I have never owned a deck until this one, and I couldn’t be happier with my purchase.I checked out websites like learn tarot, the tarot lady and biddy tarot to get a better grasp on what tarot was all about. The general theme was to let your intuition guide you. Don’t get caught up in what a card is “supposed” to mean, but what does it mean to you. So the fact that this deck is unique is nice coming from a beginner. I want to make my own connections with the cards.The set is stunning, the book is beautiful and the pictures just speak to me and really get me thinking. Honestly I have no clue if what I’ve read and seen about tarot is right or wrong but to me personally I am so happy I bought this and would definitely recommend checking it out. The cardstock is also super nice and I don’t see this deck getting run down anytime soon!!

The box arrived in perfect condition, the colors are vibrant, and the book is well written. I've seen some reviews where people complain about how vague the explanations are for each card (and, admittedly, they rather are and there's no reverse explanation), but that's the point. This isn't an obvious deck like some of the other more popular styles, it's called the Wild Unknown for a reason!This deck is so blunt it's like getting hit by a building. It will go straight to the heart of the matter, whether you want to hear the truth or not, and it will not shy away from telling you off for asking too many questions (usually, the 7 of Swords is what comes up when I'm being facetious like that, they're delightfully snarky). The vague descriptions in the guidebook allow you to figure out what every card means for that particular reading, instead of forcing the reading to the rather narrow implications of the cards. They're incredibly flexible in how you can interpret them, which gives them a bit of an edge in my opinion. Obviously this means they're not really meant for people who need that constant assurance that yes, they memorized the card correctly.The Wild Unknown is more for people who can think in the abstract and look at the images in different ways, using the context of the reading to pick out the minute details of each image. Back to the 7 of Swords, when upright there are 6 swords floating above a fox curled up as if sleeping, but with one eye open and rather obviously hiding the 7th sword in the image. This can mean something's hidden from you that you need to find or seek out or whatever in order to do the thing or solve your problem. OR it can mean that someone or something is an active threat against you, keeping that watchful eye open and waiting for the right moment to hurt you. OR it can mean YOU'RE the fox, concealing your intentions from others for reasons (good or bad or neutral, I don't know the context of your reading), and this may be a good thing or a bad thing, I don't know, I don't know the context of the reading. OR, if you're like me and ask far too many questions when the cards are being chatty, it simply means "You're being annoying, we're not going to give you any more answers, at least on this subject, go do something else". OR it can mean something else ENTIRELY because I do not know the context of the reading this card showed up in.And that's just a few possible UPRIGHT meanings of ONE card. The WHOLE DECK is like this. You have to be supremely careful how you read the cards to make sure you're getting it right. If they like you, they'll make the meanings more obvious. If they don't, best of luck to you, friend.On the plus side, I can honestly say I've had better conversations with this deck than with some people.

NO JOKE. I've been familiarizing myself with this new deck for a day and I felt COMPELLED to give it a review. The packaging and art is obviously gorgeous. The cards themselves have such a thick, silky smooth HIGH QUALITY feel to them.. just shuffling and touching this deck was a tiny luxury. I know I sound extra but I'm being real here. Lastly, the book that comes with it is refreshingly authentic and very straightforward. I can't speak for more experienced readers but being as new as I am, I can't think of a better place to start for someone interesting in pursuing tarot. That said, this book is just that, a STARTING POINT. I picked up another book along with this set (shout out 'Tarot Basics' by Evelin Burger and Johannes Fiebig) and the added perspective made a world of difference.TL;DR If you're thinking about trying tarot, buy this. You're not going to find anything more beautiful, higher quality or more educational/instructional for this price!

This deck called to me through the Internet and sent me down the proverbial Tarot Rabbit Hole!The cards are stunning but a bit hard for a newbie to understand off the bat. This was my first tarot deck and I love it all the same. it forced me to really learn the card meanings and listen to their stories as they told them.The art is beautiful, the deck itself is wide and at times savagely honest. It will tell you things and light the path out for you if you trust it!Enjoy your time in the WIld Unknown for you never know what you might find there :)

My daughter loves this book. I was expecting it to be a story or chapter book, but it's not really. It's more of a description of things that have happened in the TV show episodes. Having a hard cover on the book adds a nice touch.

It is more of a handbook than a picture book, which is great by me! The colorful part of the image is a shiny dust jacket. To anyone who loves those "making of" or "the art of" books, then you'll definately want to pick this one up too, especially if you're a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.Included within is tons of official, as well as pre-production artwork of all the main and important characters of the show, as well as various locations around Equestria, along with detailed descriptions and info. Beyond that, there's also an indepth interview with the show creator, Lauren Faust, as well as a lyric guide for all the songs featured in the show at the time of the book's creation.Be advised, though, if you get this on your Kindle (like I did), the Kindle version does NOT include the episode guide. It's only in the print version. However, I didn't really care about the episode guide too much to deduct a star.If you're a fan of the show, you HAVE to check out this book. It'll give you pretty much any information you need to know, and then some, along with fantastic artwork.

Buyer's Beware: this handbook is the ultimate fanbook of MLP: FIM. However, it only cover up to Season 3 of content, and we are currently, at the time or writing this, at Season 5 with 100th Special coming up. For the truly ultimate fans of MLP, you may want to pass on this book, as Season 4 and 5 are not included. However, the contents inside this book are true fangasms. It covers just about every pony that has ever had screen time from Seasons 1-3, every villain, big or small, and literally every thing else. There is so much commentary on different people on the DHX Team about certain obstacles they had, or certain things they praise themselves about working on the show itself. The most important thing about this book, however, are the two Introductions. Guaranteed to move any fan of MLP: FIM to utter tears. The introduction itself is my favorite part of the book, as it truly describes what My Little Pony is all about.

This is a good book but not to be confused with the Journal of the Two Sisters. The covers look the same but inside they're really different. The Journal of the Two Sisters has all of the Friendship lessons from the episodes in the characters writing. But the elements of harmony, has what all of the episodes are about, all the characters personalities, and the song lyrics. I think actually the Journal of the two sisters and the elements of Harmony books go together really well. If you have both of them you'll be a MLP expert in no time.

This is a solid and very complete book. At least all the way up to current season 3. I'd liked to have seen more background ponies listed, or better yet a more comprehensive list of ponies. They only dedicate 4 pages to Ponyville, 2 to Canterlot and 2 to Cloudsdale. They show Derpy, but she has no name or details. Not that I don't know who she is, but she should have been listed with a name. They cover a wide range of input from the creators and others involved in making the show. This to me was very interesting as I really enjoy the perspective of all the people involved in making it great. They have all the songs, even the short jingles, so you can sing along accurately now!One odd thing, to me, is that the book is actually quite small. I didn't think it would be as small as it is (the pictures make it look bigger for some reason). The construction is not bad really, and the front/back cover are decently made. The book feels solid and well bound. I've found a few pages where the ink has slightly so ever caught (leaving a small line of ink). But it is so miniscule its hardly worth noting.Get this book if your a fan, or a Brony or whatever. Its fun, interesting and should be on your shelf if you enjoy ponies that talk and have friendship adventures. :)
