This is one of the best books of any kind I have ever read. I am going to re-read ,which I seldom do. Loads of historical info that still seems up to date because nothing has changed in all these years.It is not Obama, the Republicans, global warming, aliens, or even war that will end the American society as we know it. It is our crappy food sources that are forced on us. At the head of the list is Sugar.

SPOILER ALERT: sugar is bad for you and you shouldn't eat it.If you want more detail on why, and some of the politics and interests that want you to eat it anyway, read this book. If you want more motivation to quit sugar, read this book. If you already have enough discipline and good habits to avoid sugar all the time then skip the book and do something fun instead, you got the message.

There have been “groundbreaking” books warning of the perils of sugar going back to the beginnings of the sugar trade. While Dufty’s work may have been an important sounding of the alarm for his era, I find his overblown writing style and tendency to exaggerate sophomoric and off-putting. He did some good research; it’s too bad he couldn’t just let it speak for itself. Instead, he insists on drawing spurious connections that simply are not warranted by the facts. Luckily, more recent authors have done much better by the research. I prefer the likes of Gary Taubes, a science writer with genuine journalistic chops who sticks to facts and avoids hyperbole. But I guess this book was good for its time.

I cannot remember how I came across this book but I heard someone mention it and was strongly urged within, to follow the advice and order a used copy actually which is something I like to do! It has been one of the BEST purchases I have ever made. I am still reading it but my jaw is on the floor all the way through and now I realize why I have had such a HARD TIME in this life staying 'happy'. Sugar, especially refined, complex, crystallized ACIDIC sugar is the biggest killer there is, beyond Heroin says the author William Dufty, who was married to the film actress Gloria Swanson who was quite the Health Coach even back in the day as they say. This book has CHANGED MY LIFE. I highly recommend it for the fascinating details it goes in to regarding how sugar is in nearly everything and that DIABETES can be cured by NOT TOUCHING IT - EVER! I have learned my lesson through pain and trial. So glad to have found such a golden nugget that has changed my life over night like this! :)

Over the past few years I have done everything that I could to make my family healthy. We watch what we eat, we exercise, and we do everything that the doctor and the medical establishment tells us to do. But it wasn't working. No matter how much I counted calories, worked out, and obsessed about food, I could not stop gaining weight. Two years ago I stopped drinking soda cold-turkey and within two weeks I lost 14lbs. The longer that I was off of soda the less I wanted it, and when I allowed myself to "cheat" and have one, it tasted terrible, it tasted like chemicals. I couldn't believe that I had been drinking that since I was a teenager. BUT the more that I didn't drink soda, the more it seemed that I craved chocolate. I thought it was ok, I was losing weight, to allow myself some chocolate, but the more I had, the more I wanted. Now, thanks to this book, I understand why. Sugar is a danger. NOT bad for us, but a real danger. It's terrifying, and you can read this and go on to do your own research on what he says, I always do more research before I really believe. This is an important book. VITAL.

i love this book. it was suggested to me from a friend, and it has changed my perspective. i am now trying to curb my sugar addiction.

While the book is old, the logic and science is still sound. Also, as a history nerd, this provides a huge section on the social and cultural history of sugar. Overall a great read, and well worth investigating if you have any issues with mood swings/ depression, etc. I cut out all sugar (except sugar naturally found in fruit) and artificial sweetener and literally within days saw a drastic improvement in my moodiness.

A book I read 1st back in the '70s, and have believed in it's message ever since. Rereading it only increased my belief in the message that processed sugar is to be avoided at all costs.

I've long had a keen interest in The Great Depression. I saw the effects of it in the lives of my grandparents and parents and was always curious about why they did some of the things they did. Why did they horde things? Save things that to me seemed useless? Why did my grandparents keep their money in cash at home? Why wouldn't they talk about the Depression when I asked about it?When I read this well-written, eloquent book, it brought tears to my eyes. And, I'm not a woman given to tears. Author Ted Gup takes us back to a time that is, in many ways, being repeated even now. So, it's timely. And yet, it's history. A moving, terrible history. It's hard to read about it. It must have been total hell to live it.Gup interviewed about five hundred descendants --- "many of them multiple times."There are many books written about the Depression economy. We've tried to learn what happened to cause the Depression and who or what caused it to finally lift. Though we still don't really have all those answers, we do have the opportunity to study it.But the people who suffered through it are not in those books for the most part. In this book, however, they're the stars. We feel their suffering and understand why a generation was like it was and how it produced yet another generation that was similar.But it's more than even that. It's a mystery. The author discovers his own grandfather was the mystery-giver of $750 in anonymous money given in $5 checks in 1933.Why did his grandfather, Sam Stone, do it? And why did he choose to be anonymous and indeed was for 75 years? The author didn't find all the answers but he found many that surprised even him. He found out things about his grandfather he never knew."For one moment, in one forgotten town, one man managed to shrink the vastness of the Depression to a human scale," he says.The money was given to white collar people. As one letter writer said in his gracious thank you letter to the giver, "Most people don't think about us." In other words, we worry about those who are always poor but we think little of those who worked hard to build something and then in the wink of an eye lost it all. Those who went from prosperity to poverty thanks to the Depression that engulfed the world in the thirties.The Depression hit white collar people hard. Perhaps because they had gotten so high and the fall was further and harder. Some recovered. Friends of hers said she had been full of pep and vigor. I didn't know her that way at all, so I think it probably did a job on her. It crushed her a little."My guess is it crushed her a lot. Because my family, thankfully, was not impacted by the depression, I realize that it has been hard really to put myself in the shoes of those folk who endured. As time goes by, every reader will be in this mode. This book performs the unique service {wrapped in a riveting personal story of Ted Gup's grandfather} of giving us a lens into how a good many people suffered and what desperate need they were in. This book tells, in the briefest of fashion, how it was for a person to be at the end of their tether. A meager "lifeboat" of $5 was hardly "chump change" to the desperate people who responded to the unique advertisement placed by the author's grandfather. In this day and age can we possibly either grasp or empathize with this situation which played out across America? We need to. Read this book.

A Secret Gift is such a well-written book, it reads so smoothly. That's one of my priorities is how well a book reads. Beyond that it is so much more, it brings the sometimes-forgotten past to life. I recall my Mother talking about the depression era. This book opens that door again and shares memories and brings back memories long ago told. I like the way the letters and the memories all fit together to remind us of how difficult it must have been, nearly impossible, but how they managed to get through some very difficult and sad times. The story is linked to Christmastime, which must have been even worse, but there is one hope, an ad in the paper might just be what would save a family -- or more than one family.Thank you to the author for so artfully sharing this true story. There’s no way the average consumer can understand a LIRP. They are way too complex and convoluted so you can’t determine the true costs. That’s why insurance salesmen have to SELL it to you. I’ll give you the choice of following this “expert” or Warren Buffet. Warren says put your money in a passive S&P 500 index ETF and don’t take it out until you need it decades later for retirement. Even though we do this in a taxable account all gains are deferred just like a traditional IRA, but ONLY the gains are taxable when you take it out. Remember that taxable accounts also have no contribution limits, no RMDs, no 59 1/2 penalty, you can harvest tax losses, you can sell via tax lots. Since this “expert” gets to cherrypick his tax situations I will do the same. Invest your money in a taxable S&P 500 index ETF like Vanguard VOO which has an expense ratio of .04% which is almost 38 times less than the “experts” 1.5% fee for his LIRP. Over decades and using compounding this alone will result in HUGE savings. Do NOT use a mutual fund because they distribute capital gains at the end of each year. Only use an ETF in your taxable account. Dividends from this ETF will be taxable each year, but they are only 1.85% and are qualified so they are taxed at 0% or 15% depending on your tax bracket. Here’s one example of how you avoid all the long term capital gains in this taxable account resulting in 0% tax rate. You retire at 62 and you don’t have any earnings. You defer taking Social Security until 70 resulting in maximum benefits. You live off your taxable account resulting in long term capital gains. You sell via tax lots so you can determine exactly the amount of your long term capital gains. If you file married filing jointly you can sell $101,200 worth of long term capital gains resulting in 0% tax rate! Notice I did not say you sell $101,200 worth of the ETF. You sell as much of the ETF via tax lot that results in$101,200 worth of long term capital gains. As an example $200,000 of the ETF may result in $101,200 of long term capital gains so in reality you will be selling $200,000 and not $101,200 of your ETF. This example assumes the only taxable income you have comes from this taxable account. At age 65 your standard deduction goes up by $1300 so if you both turn 65 you can do $103,800 of long term capital gains. Even if you exceed these amounts you will pay only 15% tax on the excess. Since Social Security convolutes your tax situation I highly recommend you do this before taking it.If your ETF is worth $1,000,000 and it consists of $500,000 of long term capital gains you could do this for 5 years all at 0% tax rate! Should you sell $200,00 of your ETF even if you don’t need that much income for the year? YES! By doing so you will never pay taxes on those long term capital gains. Let’s say you don’t need any income for the year. You still sell $200,000 of the ETF so you can get 0% tax rate on $101,200 of long term capital gains and you immediately go out and buy $200,000 of the same ETF to continue deferring. This effectively raises your cost basis on this $200,000. Some will say what about the wash sale rule? That ONLY applies to losses not gains. If you doubt what I am saying then enter this tax information that I have presented into a 2018 tax software program and let it tell you the answer. I am sure you will trust it more than me.

I thought this book was great...until I realized that it ignores the 10% and 15% tax rate brackets.A large portion of the book tells you that if you are going to have more income than your standard deduction/exemption in retirement you do not want to have any tax deferred money like a 401K. He explains that when it comes to the money you want to invest, if you are paying a 25% Federal tax rate now, you will likely be paying at least a 25% rate in the future and when you do the math both a 401K and a Roth IRA would come out the same. Thus he says you should generally choose a Roth type of investment because taxes are likely to be higher in the future and if they are even 1% higher you will come out better off.I pulled out the actual tax tables and materials from last year. I quickly realized that for many people the money you are currently investing in a 401K may in fact be taxed at the 25% federal rate like the book provides in most of its examples. However, I also quickly realized that for many people when they go to take distributions in future years they will never go above the 15% rate. Thus, if tax rates did not go up a person in this situation should be better off with the 401K. He explains in the book how you could do this if you do not have much regular or deferred income in retirement. I did not try to go through all those calculation to see when that would pay off because if you have any significant pension or other income it throws you out of that possibility.I originally started to give it one star because I felt it left out very critical information needed to understand. However, I changed it to two because it does give you a lot of information that is good...you just have to remember there is a 10% and 15% rate and figure out for yourself how those rates affect your situation.In all fairness,

Don't get me wrong--Gaskell's novel is magnificent--a 5+++++. Where Dickens's portrait of England's early manufacturers and nascent factory system in Hard Times is caricature, Gaskell's is nuanced and complex. I wish this novel were better known and appreciated. My low rating is for the Penguin Classics edition, with introduction and notes by one Patricia Ingham, who is identified as a Fellow in English at St. Anne's College, Oxford. Since I was re-reading the novel, I disregarded the spoiler warning and read the introduction first. Apart from a few useful facts--e.g., that Gaskell originally intended to call her novel Margaret Hale after the protagonist but changed the title before publication in Dickens's Household Words, the introduction is mostly prefab class-and-gender analysis delivered in imprecise and inelegant jargon: "[Margaret] problematizes both the contemporary major discourses that justify [the workers'] emiseration: paternalism and 'the struggle for existence.' " The notes, by the way, which are not preceded by a spoiler warning, are full of spoilers; within the first couple of pages, at least two major plot developments are revealed. The notes are also full of Ms. Ingham's superfluous and condescending explanations of the significance of events and textual features (quotations, allusions, etc.) as if the benighted reader needs her guidance at every step. Finally, this edition is poorly produced: tiny font, poor contrast between page and type, and an inside margin so skimpy that it is difficult to read the full line without breaking the binding. What's happening at Penguin? at Oxford?

The title refers to the north and south counties of England, the north industrial, the south rural. Young woman from south is forced to move with her family to a northern industrial town where she butts heads with a mill owner. Themes include workers' rights; the tragic conditions of the poor and oppressed (most of whom are very honorable people); rampant disease (affecting all classes); unrequited love; familial devotion; spiritual faith; the price of success. Hard to put down. Well developed characters in a character-driven story. Thoughtful, sometimes disturbing, and often romantic. Historical setting: early 1800's.

I have watched the series often because it is one of my favorites. As happens often the book is so much richer and sweeter, although I still consider the TV series one of my favorites. An excellent read that takes you into the center of another world, at another time!

This is a great read, and if you're familiar with or enjoy Austen's Pride and Prejudice, you will find similar plots, themes, and personalities. Gaskell's work is different in its own way to Austen's despite the similarities, and it raises important discussions on the image of Northern and Southern England, class, economics, and health that are fun to explore if you're a scholar. Many people coin this as the "darker" Pride and Prejudice, and in some ways it is. I mean, compared to Austen's own words that her work is sparkly, it's definitely different and some people are very concrete and stark on their opinions. Both are enjoyable and both are great to have on your shelf and both are important for their influence and study in Gregorian and Victorian England.

Written in the 1850s, North and South tells the story of Miss Margaret Hale, a young lady from southern, agrarian England and Mr. Thornton, a self-made, wealthy industrialist from northern England. Each is opposite to the other in all things so they begin their acquaintance at a disadvantage and continue being at odds throughout the whole course of the book. Miss Hale is proud, but likes helping her fellow man, because of her religion and because of her integrity. Mr. Thornton is proud of his accomplishments, but treats his workers with disdain. Each comes to understand and appreciate the other's viewpoint and grow as people.The only thing I didn't care for in the book is the continuous diatribe about religion, which especially Margaret was always advocating. I had to compare it to Jane Austen's novels; although both authors had similar backgrounds from families with plenty of ministers, fathers, husbands, and brothers, being such, Austen's characters, while devout, don't talk about it incessantly.

Loved the story. It ended more abruptly than I prefer, but it was a very satisfying ending nonetheless.This version is a bit flimsy, but the editor’s notes are very, very helpful. However, they sometimes contain spoilers. If you’ve never read/watched the story, be cautious about the editor’s notes.Also, unless you speak French, be prepared to Google something every couple chapters.

While I fully enjoy the actual novel North and South, this particular reproduction is not at all what I expected. It is titled and advertised that it is a hardcover version of Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South. It is NOT. The first few pages reference the constitutions of the free masons, then there are about 100+ blank pages, then pages 151-154 of the ending of North and South. Ridiculous - this should not be advertised as the North and South novel. There is a disclaimer page that "as a reproduction of a historical artifact, this work may contain missing or blurred pages, etc." but nowhere did it say that this didn't really have the novel at all. I feel this is mis-representation for something that costs over $20.

I've always loved the romantic classics by Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters, but North and South captures my heart in a different way. I love the descriptions rife with metaphors and similes. I love the characterization so clear and poetic, and how the characters stay so true to themselves. How the plot moves through the phases of longing, sadness, and despair and the tolls it takes on each character. I come back to this book over and over like an old friend

I love this book. Its old but the techniques for FWD cars havent changed much in the years. I read it once a year and try to apply the techniques to myself at HPDE days. I put it on the coffee table for all to share, but my father thinks gun books look better. Well TOO BAD DAD. Great info in here, well worth the price of admission! 100% satisfied.

Received the book and dove right in, as I was planning to drive my newly tweaked 2000 Honda Civic hatchback in an autocross near future. I set up the car as the autocross national champion (woman)suggested (e.g. ~40# pressure front, 34 back, and high tension coilovers front, soft rear). I thought it sounded strange, but who am I to challenge a national champion. When I got to the autocross to drive a front wheel drive car in an autocross for the first time (other car is a RWD Miata), the regional champ also driving a Honda Civic told me that that setup was exactly backwards. After changing to 34f/40r and soft shocks front/hard rear, the car drove great. Could things have changed that much???

I struggled with how many stars to give this book. As for truth, it is a 5 star book. This book has in many ways been a blessing to me. Paul Washer quotes and references so many scriptures to provide evidence that what he is stating is true. I have struggled for many years believing these truths while having many people in my life, including pastors, telling me that I am wrong. Thankfully, the Lord has sustained me, continued to open my eyes and has not allowed me to believe a "watered down" gospel. With all of that said, Paul Washer does not tell like minded believers what to do with regards to church. I live in a large city in the northwest, and have visited countless churches in my area. All of these churches struggle with what Paul Washer accurately states is the problem with most evangelical churches in the U.S. Case in point is the church I have been attending. The pastor states in his sermon that he would rather have a church of 10 people following Jesus than a big mega church, and the church is not about a building, it is about the people. I totally agree with these statements. Unfortunately, the pastor and leaders of the church speak differently with their actions. They are spending over 7 million dollars purchasing and remodeling the existing church building - which I thought was quite nice and adequate. At a different sermon, the pastor admonished people for not giving generously to the church building, and that was after stating that the congregation gave 5 million dollars. This is a church of 500 people! I was really hoping that Paul Washer would provide some wisdom for those of us unable to find a like minded church. In addition, I wish his ministry, Heart Cry, would look into planting churches in large cities in our own country. We really need them. I struggle with knowing whether I should just give up going to church or go to a church where the gospel is not accurately presented.

Just a young man trying to learn the Gospel all around and correctly. This 3 book series has been a great help & it’s such a great comfort that when I go to read the scriptures these truths are backed overwhelmingly. Paul Washer is trustworthy and constantly quotes from the Bible his points in this book

Christians must return to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Everything else is idolatry. So many are being deceived today. The points made by Paul Washer need to be proclaimed everywhere.

Everyone needs to read this. What the church has drifted from in these last days. Why so few will be saved. Not a work of man but of God.

Paul Washer has done it again. This time in written format. He speaks straight truth that the church today tends to disregard and brush over. Washer is intentional in portraying the truth. I just got done study the book, reading 2 chapters of the book and visiting the numerous scripture verses he uses to back up everything he says. You'll find yourself highlighting almost every word and then bouncing back and forth between scripture and Washer's book to saturate yourself in the Word of God.

Paul Washer does a incredible job in presenting the true Gospel and how it should apply to the believers life. He speaks on common misconceptions and believes the church has today and how believers should act on their faith. If you are looking for a book with powerful scripture and the promises of God, this is the book for you!

One of the best looks at Christianity in a world of easy Christian-ease. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to challenge themselves in this world of slap happy churches.
