The personal stories and exercises will resonate with a broad range of readers. Such a helpful book.”—Ben Sedley, PhD, clinical psychologist and author of Stuff That Sucks (Ben Sedley, PhD)“We all struggle with parts of ourselves and feel at some level not okay. But this common need to appear like you have it all together, is not only exhausting and disconfirming, it’s lonely as well. As you read others’ stories of this same struggle, work through exercises, and challenge your inner critic, you learn to accept yourself Just As You Are with the same care and warmth that you would your best friend.”—Janetti Marotta, PhD, author of 50 Mindful Steps to Self-Esteem (Janetti Marotta, PhD)“So many young people struggle with feeling ‘not good enough,’ or believing that something is fundamentally wrong with them. Just As You Are is a step-by-step guide to undo those negative core beliefs. Michelle and Kelly Skeen offer tools for understanding yourself, identifying strengths, and changing unhealthy habits. They teach mindfulness and self-compassion in down-to-earth language that will appeal to everyone, even those who are skeptical of self-help books.”—Ann Marie Dobosz, MA, MFT, author of The Perfectionism Workbook for Teens (Ann Marie Dobosz, MA, MFT)“Michelle Skeen has written yet another elegant, reassuring, and, most importantly, useful book. As with her other books, her hand reaches out from the pages with a powerful yet gentle message of guidance and encouragement. I bought this book for my mom, she was so impressed she wanted me to share this:I have taught and mentored high school teens for over 25 years, and have raised two daughters of my own. “Just as you are” is a book I could have used over and over again, and one that I will surely recommend now to my students and to school counselors and administrators. Michelle and Kelly Skeen take their readers on a journey towards self-understanding and self-acceptance, guiding them along the way with an engaging prose that is authentic, intelligent, and never condescending. The many personal accounts illustrate the universality of the feelings, emotions, and behaviors that the authors unpack for their readers. The format is exceptionally helpful, including “Try This!” excercises, “Putting It All Together” summaries, and guideposts along the way reminding readers where they have been and what lies ahead. A great tool for personal growth!

I am obsessed with this book. I am a teen mindfulness coach and have started to use this book as a road map to support my clients better. Michelle & Kelly break it down so the material is digestible for teens and parents alike. I love the exercises in the book and have found them transformational for my work!!!!! Thank you, Kelly and Michelle for your work!

The person I purchased this for looked through it and was totally disinterested. I read a portion of it and found it unengaging. I didn't care for it either.

As a psychologist in private practice working with teens and their families, I’m always looking for helpful and relevant resources to help my clients navigate the immensely challenging time of adolescence. This is just that sort of resource. These thoughtful mother and daughter coauthors have created a truly unique and practical guide. Their tone is relatable, warm, compassionate, and encouraging. They present potentially complex topics (e.g., mindfulness and self-acceptance) in a way that’s refreshingly engaging and easy to understand. The personal shares from co-author Kelly really drive home each section’s lessons, themes, and suggestions. As soon as I finished this excellent book, I enthusiastically recommended it to my clients, my colleagues who work with parents and teens, as well as to all my friends who have preadolescent or adolescent children. I only wish my parents and I had had access to such a thoughtful and important book way back when I was a teen!

I currently teach a middle school advisory class and use “Just As You Are” to help ground myself in the perspective of a student. The case studies are relatable for students and very insightful for educators or family members. If you are a classroom teacher I highly recommend that you add a copy to your professional library

I was given this book as a gift and was so impressed by it As a young women in the age of social media, it is so easy to get caught up in everyone else. What do other people look like? How thin are they? Where are they going on vacation? Why don't I look like the women in the magazines? Why am I not getting the same summer internships as her? This book helps quiet all those demons and helps you realize that nobody else matters! I already feel like a more confident person after reading this. Each page is filled with tips and tricks to ward off negative feelings and learn to love yourself. I will definitely be referencing this book for years to come and gifting it to all my friends.

I found myself taking notes while reading this excellent teenage advice book. As I frantically scribbled in the margins, I realized that the true power of this book is the simple way Michelle and Kelly capture what teens think, how they feel, and how they can feel better. From Kelly "... I feel more confident in my decisions when I let myself be open to new people, opportunities and experiences." This is just one of numerous helpful and powerful tidbits contained in this book.Simply put: if you're a parent, a grandparent, or a friend of a teenager, buy them this book. They'll thank you for it (though perhaps not immediately - they're teens, after all).

"Just As You Are" is awesome. I recently came out, but all I could think about while reading the book is how much I wish I had read it a few years ago when I was still in the closet. I really needed someone then to tell me that I could be happy and fulfilled 'just as I am!'My favorite things about the book:1. Every point the authors make is expanded upon with personal stories from other teens. It made it all feel more real.2. The book is scattered with a few dozen thought exercises and journaling prompts, which were really helpful in figuring out how to apply its lessons to my own life.
